*It's fine to align with a political position, but don't use it for academic writing. Look for neutrality.

How to Suck Up to Your Teacher by Researching Like a Nerdy Librarian

"I found all my sources. Now, what do I do?"

"Can I only use each resource once?"

"No. Your teacher wants to see how well your writing can blend a lot of information from a lot of sources. "

"Do novel summary websites count as a source?"

"No, but you can find the same information in a database and those summaries count!"

let's say i'm writing a paper about pediatric diseases... I do my search with several tabs open to evaluate information by comparing evidence (reading laterally):

I might use this to get me started with general background information, search terms, and citation harvesting.

An online collection of resources, especially appropriate for academic research. Librarians pay big bucks to the company supplying each database. They are responsible for up-to-date, accurate, and reliable information. They provide citations for you!

A search query is an entry into an online search engine that yields both paid and organic results. The paid results are the ads that appear at the top and the bottom of the page, and they are marked accordingly. The organic results are the unmarked results that appear in between the ads.

Without a clear strategy, using a search engine is like wandering aimlessly in a field of corn looking for the most perfect kernel.

You must approach internet research like a professional fact checker!

For every website you visit ask yourself: 1. Who is behind this information and why are they sharing it? 2. What evidence backs up their claims? 3. What do other websites say about this organization, its claims, and its purpose?

to inform?  to persuade?  to sell you something?

where did they get evidence? how did they gather it? do all their links work?

what does lateral reading tell you? what did you find out from many other websites?

you don't have to take all these precautions with databases...i'm just sayin'

As soon as you decide which websites you're going to use, get a citation created ASAP! 

Look up how to do it from scratch through <a href="https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style/mla_style_introduction.html">Purdue OWL</a> (online writing lab).

Use a citation generator like <a href="https://www.easybib.com/">EasyBib</a> (be sure you're familiar enough with citation styles to catch any missing elements).

Use your librarians' resources on the <a href="https://chs.helenaschools.org/library/citation-resources/">CHS Library Citation</a> page.

Remember, unlike websites, databases provide citations for you with the click of one button.
