The national flag: the colours represent the Catholics (green) and the Protestants in Ireland (orange), with white representing the wish for peace between them ( see "History").
The National Coat of Arms: a gold harp with silver strings on a blue background. The harp was adopted as the emblem of the Irish Free State when it separated from the United Kingdom in 1922.

GEOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE
Ireland is an island in Northwestern Europe in the north Atlantic Ocean. The island is surrounded in the north and west by the Atlantic Ocean and to the northeast lies the North Channel. To the east, the Irish Sea connects to the Atlantic Ocean through St George's Channel and the Celtic Sea to the southwest. 
Highest point: Carrauntoohil (1,038 m) located in the Macgillycuddy's Reeks mountain range in the southwest.
Longest river: the River Shannon (386 kilometres )
The west coast is more rugged than the east, with numerous islands, peninsulas, headlands and bays. There are a number of large lakes along Ireland's rivers, of which Lough Neagh is the largest.
