EVERGREEN ARTS

Evergreen Public Schools is dedicated to offering students the opportunity to explore and excel in the visual arts. From beginning classes to college-level AP Studio Art and AP Art History, we prepare students for creative and critical challenges related to visual culture and contemporary society.

Some of our most successful students go on to study Art, Architecture, Graphic Design and Museum Studies. Students who take a beginning, intermediate and advanced or Advanced Placement art classes by Fall of their senior year, will build a college-level portfolio that can be used for admission and scholarships to Art Schools and Universities.

At the very least we want our students to embrace the arts as a source of joy and comfort, but we also hope they go on to use their creativity to solve some of society's more complex social and environmental problems.

Art 2D-1

In this beginning art course, students will explore drawing, painting, printmaking and a variety of mixed-media art techniques. Students will use 2-dimensional art media, including pencil, pen, ink, pastel, watercolor, tempera, acrylic, and collage. Students will also learn the elements and principles of art through active problem solving in composition and design. This course will increase visual literacy through the examination of artworks and artists across history and cultures.

Art 2D: Course Descriptions & Pathway

The course will build on students’ introductory experiences in art, and includes more sophisticated drawing, painting, printmaking and mixed-media art techniques. The intermediate instruction will include special historic and contemporary art experiences like marbling, bookmaking, calligraphy and screen-printing. While students will continue to increase their visual literacy through the examination of artworks and artists across history and cultures, there will also be a new emphasis on developing ideas, and personal style.

This course will further deepen the student’s experience as an independent artist. The student, in collaboration with the teacher, will determine the medium and subject of his/her choice on which to focus, and will create an independent portfolio of work. Media may include any of the materials and techniques that the student learned in previous segments. The student will investigate contemporary art making and develop his/her own individual style and method of working as an artist.

Prepare to embark on an inspiring artistic journey over two semesters in this AP college-level course! The 2-D AP Class consists of two portfolio exams to choose from--2-D Drawing or 2-D Design--both of which correspond to a college level foundations class. The portfolios allow for flexibility of coursework, while guiding students to produce college-level artistic investigations. Students will research and develop ideas, experiment with historic and contemporary art processes to further develop personal voice and style. (Requires at least one previous high school art class or the special permission of the AP Art instructor.)
