Editor's letter We are very happy to publish the 2nd issue of BAM, the foreign languages department magazine whose first number was released last course during lockdown. In that occasion the writers, illustrators and collaborators were the students of 3rd of ESO, who now are in the fourth level. In this issue you will see samples of different articles, pieces of writing and other works carried out by all the students in Institut Baix a mar. We hope you enjoy while reading BAM !

Learning a foreign language by César Gómez Rafael 2BATB I am currently learning German. It is fascinating, but hard at the same time. German is nothing like the languages I have been speaking in, but I found out that my struggle is not only because of the differences between them, it is also because I want to speak it fluently. So, how can you speak a really different language, but still do it well? Thinking of my own experience, I have found 3 steps, but before I dig into the steps, I want to ask you a question, learning a foreign language is hard, right? but why is that? It could be because of the different sounds, letters, grammar structure, but is that all?

In my opinion, the biggest reason is because people are afraid of being wrong, and that’s the first step.&nbsp; Not to be afraid of failure, be wrong, make mistakes, fail, you should not be ashamed of those, because by failing, you can make great progress.&nbsp; The second step is to find a guide. Failure helps you learn, but you do need someone to help you out with your mistakes. My guide is my German teacher, but of course it is ok if you do not have a language teacher; look around, people would love to teach you their native language, the fact itself that a foreigner is trying to learn their language makes people delighted, so look around, and find a guide.

TELLING MY STORY. STRAY DOGS.

I carried my bags up the stairs into my new room and stood there trying to take in the new surroundings. The first thing I noticed was that it was smaller than my previous room, I frowned and stomped my way down the stairs where my father was. ‘I can’t believe you would to this to me! First you make us move across the country and now I my room isn’t even big, ugh, are you trying to ruin my life or something?!’ I screamed in despair. Dad just shook his head, completely ignoring me. I climbed up the stairs once more and slammed my door shut, sliding down to the floor as I began to let out heart-wrenching sobs; my world had completely turned upside down in the past couple of months: Mom had died suddenly in a horrible car accident and Dad had decided that the best way to deal with it was moving from San Francisco to a small town in Ohio of all places because he had found a better job, I just couldn’t believe… My thoughts were interrupted by Parker knocking on my door. ‘Not now, dumbass!’ I shouted, hoping he would leave. He completely ignored me and said:

SHREK'S PLACE IN THE WORLD

Chapter I: “The Beginning” I sighed as we pulled up to our new house, the 10-hour road trip had been beyond exhausting and I was starving; the last time we had stopped for a bite had been in Nebraska and I couldn’t wait to eat a large pepperoni pizza. ‘Kenzeigh, come on! We have to get out and start unpacking out stuff.’ I groaned and rolled my eyes as my little brother Parker started ushering me out of the car. Our Dad was already waiting outside with two heavy looking bags, and Parker and I proceeded to take our own and bring them inside our new house. ‘Come on guys, you’ll love this place! This new change of airs is exactly what we need now, especially after your mother’s passing.’ The mood instantly became sober with the mention of mom’s passing. ‘Whatever you say, Dad’ I mumbled, not wanting to ruin the mood even more.

26th September is the European Day of Languages, which was first celebrated in 2001 during the European Year of Languages. The goal of this day is to promote linguistic diversity and the ability to speak other languages. Our students of 3rd of ESO are taking part in an eTwinning project and are collaborating with schools from Poland, Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria. The title of this project is ‘Can you speak my language?’ It is a short-term project aiming at developing students’ knowledge about other European languages. Students get to know the stories of their partners’ alphabetical creation, the history of their language which broadens their horizons and basic understanding of other cultures. The common language is English and with the carrying out of the project, students get a real motivation to practice this language.

HALLOWEEN HAIKUS By 3rd ESO. A haiku is a type of short form poetry originally from&nbsp;Japan. A traditional Japanese haiku consists of three phrases having 5 - 7 - 5 syllables. It has no rhyme and you can write a Haiku only using nouns, or only adjectives or verbs. Below there is a selection of Halloween haikus written by students from 3rd ESO B.

To me, German is like a bridge, that connects me with a really different culture, and I guess that’s why I’m passionate about it. Just remember, when you are full of passion there is nothing that can stop you from meeting your goal. Learning a language is difficult, but when you are not afraid to fail, find someone to help you out, and be passionate, you will be more than ready to learn or speak a foreign language. Thank you.

Finally, the last step is to be passionate; passion is powerful, sometimes you may get down when you find something challenging, but as you get to know a language better, you will see how capable of it you are.

What’s the meaning behind the flag of the Second Spanish Republic flag?

The Spanish republican flag began to be used on April 27, 1931, thirteen days after municipal elections results led to the abolition of the monarchy and the proclamation of the Second Spanish Republic.&nbsp; However, the origins of this flag go way back, as it had been previously displayed by certain Republican groups as an alternative to the red-and-yellow flag that was identified with the Bourbon monarchy in Spain. Its yellow, red and purple bands symbolizing an era of democratic promise. As a result of this previous use, the young republic proclaimed in 1931 eagerly adopted this symbol.

The Republican flag is formed by three horizontal bands of the same width, red, yellow, and purple. Purple, represents Castile and León by recalling the Pendón Morado, the ancient armorial banner of Castile. The colours of red and yellow symbolise the territories of the former Crown of Aragon. These three colours symbolised a new era for Spain in which no part thereof was excluded and all Spaniards were represented. Furthermore, the flag also had the spanish republican coat of arms at the centre, that being a representation of Castile, Leon, Aragon, Navarre and also Granada, ensigned by a mural crown, between the two Pillars of Hercules which symbolizes Spain’s unity and past greatness in the discovery of america that required the nation to go beyond the ancient known world which ended in modern day Gibraltar.&nbsp;
