How to slow shutter speed

What is it and why should I care? Slow shutter speed or Long Exposure can be brilliant if you want to blur motion. You know those cool light trail shots with as in light trails from cars, fireworks, or blurred running water. On cameras this is done by leaving the shutter open and allowing light to play on the subject over time. In cellphones it uses AI to "cheat" and takes a bunch of shots and blurs them together. The effect is a photo that feels more like a memory as opposed to a straight photo.

Usually if you are on the live image you can either swipe up or touch the drop down menu in the upper left hand corner of older iphones.  This will give you access to the 4 options of Live, Loop, Bounce, and Long Exposure.  Loop and bounce are fun for making Gifs and video clips but Long exposure can be used to erase people from backgrounds and for creating a motion blur effect which can be quite cool. 

The app costs $3.50 US but it has some seriously cool effects.   It allows you to blur images on top of other blurred images and gives you a greater range of time that the phone camera is left open which is great for astral photography.  But remember for long shutters you will need a tripod if you want the best results.

This app is my go to on my older android and it enables me to get solid long exposure shots.

Select Live mode on Apple phones and then select the slow shutter speed options. For some of the newer androids they have slow shutter options. For older Androids I have bought the <a href="https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobilephoton.motioncamera">App Motion Pro cam </a>and it works brilliantly.

Use Long Exposure and either photograph a moving subject or you move to create the feeling of blur in the image. Keep playing until you have the happiest of accidents. Long Exposure works well to blur motion so this can be light trails of cars or spinning fire poi, you can use it during the day to blur the motion of water or create interesting effects on windy days.

To take images of light trails you can also try using Lightroom camera and go to professional mode and adjust the Sec button to be below 1/30th of a second and then Adjust your ISO until you are happy with the exposure.  Play with different speeds and see what you like.
