What is it?
Rule of thirds is a story telling skill in photography.
Depending on where you put your subject you can create tension or you can create space and openness.

When you plonk the subject bang in the middle of a photo it can be very effective if used intentionally.  But it can also be boring and static as heck.  However if you move the image to about one third from the edge it can add a sense of movement or dynamic flow to the image. 

Just be aware that if the subject is facing out of the frame and is close to the edge it will feel uncomfortable…which is perfectly fine it that is what you were aiming for, but usually you want to give subjects room to “breathe” And have ¾ of the frame to look into. 
Some cameras and phones have Grids set up that help you to see this easily.

On androids you open the camera app and then engage the Gridlines by pushing the settings menu
