INTRODUCTION
Look around you. Do you see anyone on their phone? If not, do you remember seeing someone on their phone today? Probably.

Phones cause problems for many teenagers. In the past two years, studies have shown that 50% of teenagers are addicted to their smartphones. Their phones prevent them from spending time with their family and friends. Students who are not addicted to their phones have been proven to get more sleep, spend more time with family and do better in school. If you were wondering sites we looked at read that it depends what you are doing if you were wondering how many hours a day you should be on your phone.

Teenagers who hide their phones under their pillows hear buzzing in the middle of the night and therefore do not get enough sleep. Sometimes when they put their phones under their pillows, the phones get too hot and set the pillow on fire.

Texting and driving is not only dangerous but sometimes deadly.

EFFECT ON SLEEP

Did you know that sleep can be strongly affected by electronic devices?

Research shows teens who use social media during bedtime could be getting less sleep and could possibly make them depressed and anxious. The screen light from the phone prevents melatonin (a hormone that helps you sleep) from working. A screen’s blue-ish light is recognized by cells in the back of your eyes that send a message to your brain that it's morning time. Most Apple devices have a “night shift” button which turns your screen from a blue-ish light to a warmer color that is supposed to be easier on your eyes. But studies have shown that screens affect your sleep because of not only the light but the fact that people using devices during bedtime can have a harder time “shutting their brain off.”

THEN AND NOW PHONE EVOLUTION

"Mr. Watson--come here--I want to see you.” Sound familiar? If not, it was the first words spoken into a telephone.

The first phone call was spoken by Alexander Graham Bell. He was calling his assistant Thomas Watson. Alexander's splendid invention lit up our world and inspired many others to build off his invention and eventually create what we have today…. cell phones. Cell phones are part of 6.8 billion people's life (almost as many people as there are on earth!) and not only teenagers but many other people take advantage of how lucky we are be able to have access to such a wonder of technology without even touching the science of a phone. Phones have changed a lot since then, as you can see on the next page. The next page shows images of how phones have changed and how they look on the inside over the years.

EVOLUTION OF PHONES 📱 ☎️ 📞
We know that so far we have mostly taught you about the disadvantages of having a phone. But there are some advantages that can be very useful. First of all, phones are an extremely efficient way to communicate with others. You can text, Email, FaceTime and call anybody as long as you have their phone number.

Second of all, cell phones are a very easy way to access information using the internet. Another great thing about cell phones is they pass the time and provide entertainment. You can watch funny videos and play games. Also, it is an easy and efficient way to get work done. Say you're a teacher and you want to assign homework or something.

With a phone you can easily do so. Another good reason to have a phone is that it is a quick and easy way to store information so that you can just open up your phone and go on to wherever you store your information and it is right there.
