This curriculum is the result of the EduEnvi project - a joint collaboration of nine universities: Tampere University of Applied Sciences (Finland), Lillebaelt Academy (Denmark), University of Valladolid  (Spain), ITMO University (St. Petersburg, Russia), Ural Federal University named after Boris Eltsyn (Russia), Tumen State University (Russia), Kazakh National University Al-Farabi (Kazakhstan), Kokchetau State University named after Sh. Ualikhanov (Kazakhstan), South Kazakhstan State University named after. M. Auezov (Kazakhstan). The project addressed the need to update the current education and create new competences in the field of sustainable waste management in Russia and Kazakhstan by developing higher education training curriculum at the master's level together to better match the needs of companies and other interested parties.
The EduEnvi project led to creation of 20 new courses, which can be used in various combinations according to the required curricula content or learning package. The content offers eight contemporary thematic modules created, 60 ECTS altogether and is implemented in three Russian and three Kazakh universities within the new master's programs and includes online courses and e-learning materials to share the aligned curricula content between participating universities. It is also available at open education platforms open.edu.ru, mooc.kz and edx and can be used for training purposes in the international student groups and for training in companies.

MODULE I: Comprehensive risk assessment in waste management

Competences obtained by students:

Ability to assess and rank risks associated with waste management (social, economic and environmental risks).

Ability to choose technologies for waste management facilities and manage environmental monitoring of soil, water, air and nature.
Course 1: Introduction to environmental risks, 3 ECTS

Competences obtained by students: Students will be
– able to assess the environmental risk created by the object of waste disposal on air, water, soil for sustainable management of industrial production;
– able to apply quantitative calculation methods of risk assessment in practice;
– able to argue and determine the level of risk associated with the activities of enterprises;
– possesses competencies for formulating issues, challenges, and generalization of the results obtained for risk assessment.

Learning Outcomes:
After this course students will be able to
- demonstrate knowledge of key concepts, definitions and different approaches to environmental risk assessment;
– use knowledge of environmental monitoring to assess risks;
– calculate the level of risk created by the enterprise for air, water, soil using monitoring data;
– use regulatory documents in the field of environmental risk assessment;
– normalize and assess the risk of contamination of territories with radioactive waste;
– make design and technical documentation for the assessment of existing risks.
Requirements/Prior knowledge
Prior knowledge of environmental monitoring and the basics of environmental sustainability, as well as the requirements of environmental legislation are prerequisites for this discipline.
Contents
Basic concepts and definitions in environmental risk assessment
Different methods of environmental impact assessment
Environmental monitoring for environmental risk assessment
Evaluation of the hazards of air pollution
Assessment of water quality depending on water pollution index, saprobity and microbiological indicators
Soil pollution risk assessment
Assessment of the risk of contamination of territories with radioactive waste
Teaching methods
The course is based on active teaching methods, including problem and video lectures. Students will learn the basic terms, modern approaches and methods for assessing the environmental risks associated with waste management. The theoretical part of the course will include lectures and exercises on the quantitative calculation and ranking of the level of risk exerted by enterprises on the environment using monitoring data.
The practical part will include problem tasks, case situations and mini-projects to assess existing risks.
Learning materials
Text books, guidance, Internet links, video materials, cases for studies (data on problem formulating), web-sites of Committee on Statistics and RSE “Kazhydromet”)
Assessment methods
The current assessment will be carried out based on the results of the test and calculation tasks. The final control of students will be carried out by assessing the mini-project to assess the existing risks of industrial waste impact on the environment.
Assessment criteria
A (Excellent) – deep knowledge of the theory, understanding of all phenomena and processes, ability to analyze and compare different approaches to the solution of the stated problems; answers to the questions are presented logically.
B (Very Good) – demonstrates a solid knowledge of learning material, lectures, basic textbook; ability to analyze the material, but not all conclusions are reasoned and evidence-based
C (Good) – insufficient knowledge of the main characteristics of the disclosed categories within the framework of the recommended textbooks and the provisions given in the lectures; presentation of the material the conclusions.
