We are pleased to present this online guide, full of fun your family is sure to love. Inside are activities, videos, mini-lessons, and demonstrations from 28 arts and cultural insitutions in Greater Louisville.

While we'd prefer to be with you in person, we thought a little bit of arts and culture at home might inspire you, even in this virtual way. And, while our venues might normally charge for these types of learning opportunties, we're excited to present it to you at no cost, as our gift! THANK YOU for supporting us, celebrating and honoring the arts and cultural experiences our region has to offer, and sticking with us during this challenging time.

Even though most of us are not getting on a plane anytime soon, we can still be inspired by the materials that we have at our own homes. Artist Nina Katchadourian created, SkyMall Kitties, when she was sitting on a plane looking at SkyMall catalogue.

The artist explains:
“Reading the SkyMall catalogue is an in-flight ritual for me. I know much of the imagery almost by heart. Every time I get on a plane, I page through it to make sure certain products are still present (hello, Garden Yeti; hello, inflatable tray-table pillow; hello, foam massage wedge). I always noticed the pet products, which divide into dog and cat categories. I took note that the dogs were shown in slightly pathetic situations (bed ramp for arthritic old dog) and, in contrast, the cats had litter boxes disguised as house plants or space capsules and perched on human toilets, smart enough to be trained to do such a thing. I wrote the “SkyMall Kitties” song in flight, mentioning as many specific pet items as possible, and recorded it once I got home, adding images of the products mentioned in the song to construct the video,”

Activity: Create a song or story based on what you see in a catalogue. (Ages 8-18)
Choose one magazine in your house—it can be a clothing catalogue or a National Geographic or anything that has images—and spend some time looking through it. Who do you see? Animals? People? A place? What are other images in the same catalogue that will help you build a story?

You will need:
-A catalogue or Magazine: Anything with pictures will do—maybe best with something you don’t mind cutting up.

-a topic: What is your song going to be about? Which character or characters in the catalogue is/are interesting to you?

-a melody: think about a song you already know. Humm it. Start simple.

-a chorus: Sky Mall Kitties has a very simple chorus: “Sky Mall Kitties, Kitties everywhere, Sky Mall Kitties, The Kitties of the Air” that is repeated twice. Come up with a chorus that you can repeat
.
-2-3 verses: uses the verses to tell a story. In the case of Sky Mall Kitties, it is about Kitties doing kitty things.

There are SO MANY ways to construct a song. Let loose and
don’t be afraid to make a mistake. This is fun and can be about anything.

For those with the computer capabilities, you can create a video or a PowerPoint presentation of the images and sing along. Or, you can create a collage on paper and hold them while singing!

TWO CHILDREN, BOTH BLIND, WHO CHANGED THE WORLD

LOUIS BRAILLE

In 1829, Louis Braille published a book which gave people who are blind a magnificent gift: the ability to read and write. He was only twelve years old when he started working on his code, which we call braille. It is now used worldwide by the blind and has been adapted for hundreds of different languages. To read braille, people run their fingers across dots which are raised up from the surface of the page.

·      How old was Louis when he started to work on his code?
·      Louis didn’t call the code “braille.” What did he call it?
·      Did Louis have any other inventions?
·      What did Louis do after he grew up?

Very few people who are sighted can read braille by touch.
However, sighted people can and do learn to read braille by sight.

HELEN KELLER

Helen Keller was born in 1880. She lost her sight and her hearing at the age of 18 months. She learned to understand words and their meaning from her teacher, Annie Sullivan, when she was six years old. By the time she was ten, she was the most famous child in the world. Thousands of people read about her in newspapers and magazines. They marveled that a child who was deaf and blind could achieve so much. People used to think that children who were disabled could do very little. Helen changed that.

After she learned to communicate, Helen found she had a lot to say. She wrote hundreds of articles and published many books. She wrote about the unfair treatment of people who were bind or deaf, people who were poor or unemployed, or people of difference races. She wanted to make the world a better place for everyone.
