Stories - Warm Up Activities

Class discussion: What sorts of books do you like listening to/reading? Why?

Did you know?: Every country has different famous authors and stories. Here are some examples of a few well know characters:

Find out how you say what books you like in Spanish & French.

Who are your favourite authors or characters from books? Why? Carry out a class survey.

Scotland - Katie Morag, Gruffalo

Try searching online for a video of a story you like & see if it is available in another language. Watch/listen to it - can you understand the main ideas?

These examples show different approaches to using stories with a class. They can all be adapted for any language or level with the appropriate support.

Nursery

Dear Zoo (English)

Activity: Listen to a story & play.

Let's join in! Say hello/goodbye in another language to each animal.

Let's play: Enjoy sensory play & figurines.

Let's create! Make a story sack to retell the story with toys & a cardboard box. Encourage learners to join in & act it out. Why not change the animals too & make your own version.

Share your work - Create a photo collage of your Dear Zoo animals story sack for a wall display or digitally using PicCollage.

Early Level

Le petit poisson (French)

Task: Listen, join in & perform the story.

Let's listen! Watch & listen to this French story about a fish who has lost his mum & searches for her.

Let's retell the story: Use the First - Next - Then - Last structure to explain the story in your own words.

Let's join in: Revise key language. Ask learners to say the colours they see before hearing the phrases & joining in.

Time to get creative: Draw, paint or make the sea creatures & act out the story. Try using paper plates! Change the order/colours of the creatures to make your own version.

Share your work: Perform the story or your version to another class/parents or video it & share on the school blog.

First Level

Farmer Duck (Gaelic)

Your Task - Listen, act it out & create own big book using a simple picture book for inspiration.

Let's listen: Click here to watch a video of the story read aloud. A great way to learn / revise animals in Gaelic.

What's the story about?: Make a story map using key words, phrases & pictures - example. Add some in Gaelic if you can.

Time to join in: Divide the class into groups & each one is a different animal. They do a mime when they are mentioned in the story.

Let's create: Make a class big book showing the animals from Farmer Duck. Draw/paint the animals & label them or write short phrases.

Share your work: Teach another class the animals using the big book. Take photos of the book & create a video using Adobe Spark.
