Challenges

What is it? A book with 32 challenge questions divided into 4 themed weeks - Week 1 - All about me, Week 2 - Numbers, Week 3 - Other Core Language, Week 4 - Cultural. Each question has 2 audio files - the question & answer.

Who is it for? The book could be used by the teacher, shared with learners or parents.

How can it be used? The teacher could choose to set a class a question each day or week, add it to weekly or termly homework, a fun end of term class quiz, to celebrate Languages Week or European Languages Day or for a French Themed Day.

Follow-up - The teacher could adapt/create questions on the same/other topics using the different types of questions in this book. Learners could create their own challenge questions for each other, another class or the teacher!

Week 1 - All About Me

1. What is the word for hello and goodbye? Use these words as many times as you can today.

2. Ask someone how they are today.

3. Answer this question - ‘Comment tu t’appelles?’

4. Answer this question - ‘Quel âge tu-as?’

5. Answer this question - ‘Quelle est ta couleur favorite?’

6. Answer this question - ‘Tu aimes les fruits?

7. Answer this question - ‘Tu préfères le football ou le tennis?’

Bonus - Answer this question - ‘Tu as un animal à la maison?

Week 2 - Numeracy

1. Count to 10, 20, 30...100 etc outloud.

2. Do 20 star jumps & count them as you do them.

3. What is 3 x 3?

4. Create your own mental maths problem & try it out on someone.

5. What day of the week is it? (lundi, mardi, mercredi, jeudi, vendredi, samedi, dimanche)

6. What month is it? (janvier, février, mars, avril, mai, juin, juillet, août, septembre, octobre, novembre, décembre)

7. What is the date today?

Bonus - What 2 numbers between 0-10 start with the letter d in French? Spell them if you can.

Week 3 - Core Topics

1. Find something that is ‘rouge’ & share what it is in English or French if you can.

2. Choose 3+ felt tips pens and say the colours in French. (eg. bleu, orange, violet, rose, jaune, rouge, vert, noir, blanc)

3. Point to at least 3 parts of your body & say the words in French. (eg. les yeux, la bouche, le nez)

4. What is the weather like today?

5. Which phrase best describes the weather today - il fait froid, il fait chaud, il fait mauvais, il fait beau, il pleut, il neige?

6. Say the alphabet.

7. Think of 3-5 words (or more if you can) for animals, family members, parts of the body, sports, food, clothes etc. Share at least 1 word.

Bonus - What animal is ‘violent, agressif, jaune et africain’?

Week 4 - Cultural

1. What are the colours of the French flag? Draw it if you can.

2. Share 1 thing that France is famous for.

3. Sing a (traditional) French song you know eg. Frère Jacques

4. Name a famous French person/scientist/writer/singer/celebrity etc.

5. What is a traditional French food/dish?

6. What is the mascot of France?

7. What is the capital of France?
