Voice/Voicing

Voice or voicing is a term used in phonetics and phonology to characterize speech sounds (usually consonants). Speech sounds can be described as mute (otherwise known as mute) or voiceless.

However, the term is used to refer to two separate concepts:
Speech can refer to the process of articulation in which the vocal cords vibrate, its primary use in phonetics to describe the telephone, which is a particular speech sound.
It may also refer to a classification of speech sounds that tend to be associated with vocal cord vibrations but may not actually be voiced on an articulatory level. That is the main use of terms in phonology: to describe a phoneme; whereas in phonetics its main use is to describe telephones.
For example, voicing explains the difference between the pairs of sounds associated with the English letters "s" and "z". The two sounds are transcribed as [s] and [z] to distinguish them from English letters, which have several possible pronunciations, depending on the context.
