The name Arthur seems to derive from the word "art", which is Celtic for" bear". Due to this, many historians wonder if Arthur, like so many other Celtic gods, could simply be a personification of many of the wild animals of the time.

Nowadays, the constellation of the Great Bear is sometimes known as the Way of Arthur. In the Celtic world three bear-shaped gods are known.

In Britain, there is very little evidence of having performed the worship of these gods, although in the city of Yorkshire they often sell many talismans with bear figures.

The god to whom they probably refer, derives its name from the word Matus in Latin. They refer specifically to the god Matunus, who may have had a shrine at Risingham.
