GERMANY
Christmas traditions in Germany
In Germany Christmas is a special time of the year.
Christmas time starts in December. People decorate their houses. They hang stars and fairy lights into the windows. "Weihnachtsplätzchen" (Christmas cookies) are very popular. And yummi :-)
Children get advent calendars.
Many families have an Advent wreath with four candles.
At school we sing Christmas songs and learn Christmas poems. Kids who play an instrument learn how to play Christmas songs.
Children write a letter to "Santa" or to „Christkind“. They write down all their wishes.
There are many Christmas markets in and around Berlin. Christmas markets are great fun.
On 6th December we celebrate St.Nikolaus.
We celebrate Christmas on 24th December, on Christmas Eve. Some families go to church. Families meet, celebrate together and children get their presents in the evening. Most families have a Christmas tree.
On 25th and 26th December (1. and 2. Christmas Day) a lot of families meet family and friends and enjoy a nice Christmas Dinner.
