Campanarazzu is the ancient Mother church of the Ancient Misterbianco destroyed by the lava eruption of the 1669. After more than three centuries from destruction, with determination has returned to light the main church of the old farmhouse, dedicated to our lady of grace. The name "Campanarazzu" refers to a bell that survived the lava flow that surrounded and destroyed the ancient Misterbianco in the 1669. It is today an archeological site excavated beneath a lava eruption formed by very hard basalt. Excavation have allowed to find the well preserved church: the action of lava was fortunately more that of a coverage than of destruction. The entire main nave, the central and side altars, the remains of a fresco , the baptistery, the beautiful side door and the main entrance have been brought to light. The floor, mostly in terracotta, was protected from the fall of the roof to which lava poured.

In front of the main entrance of the church, the floor with the first steps made of strips of lava stone came to light. Works are still active, so the archeological site is not open to public; it is possible however to take guided tours.

Misterbianco is a town rich of history. Its capital is the city of Catania and it is very near at it. In the 1669 there were numerous earthquakes and a strong eruption of mount Etna. On march two main lava branches completely de stroyed Misterbianco. Few things were spared by the fury of the lava: a small house, a small oak grove, the bell tower of the mother church called "Campanarazzu" and the rural church of the " Madonna degli ammalati", where take place a festivity in the second sundays of september, in honor of the Madonna. While they escaped to the fair of the volcano Etna, people stopped at the feet of a big and a robust olive tree in which they hung a heavy bell. They called it " Oliva Mpittata". In the 1891 people decided to rebuilt the new country. People built the first church like the old one. This is S. Nicolò and then they built the new Mother's church.

The name of Misterbianco derives from the sicilian term "Musteri Jancu", that means " Monastero Bianco", it refers to the white walls of a Benedictine Monastery destroyed by the lava.

The mother church is the biggest church of the town and it is dedicated to the Saint Patron. Its construction initiated after the 1669 Etna eruption. Its imposing romanesque facade is made of the popular Priolo stone. Inside the church is adorned with precious works such as an old marvellous statue of the "Madonna delle Grazie" , a statue of "Sant'Antonio da Padova". Moreover there are two of the four "ceri" of the patron Saint of the town. Its ceiling is full of frescos to admire.

Useful tips to go to Misterbianco. - From the airport take the alibus , get off to railway station, take metro to Nesima station. Take minibus to Lineri station. In Lineri station take the minibus " comune di Misterbianco" ( free, with timetable to the bus stop) or FCE train ( ticket 1 euro) and get off to Misterbianco center. - From railway station, take soon Metro and get off Nesima station ; follow same tips. This monument built in the 1930 by Enrico Licari, it is dedicated to the soldiers died during the first world war. It is in the most important square of the town Mazzini square , along Garibaldi street. It is a lively meeting places. In Garibaldi street there is "Palazzo Ducale", the old house of the dukes of Misterbianco, Trigona.

In Resistenza square there are ruins of the splendid thermae dated back to roman period. The wall structure was made of big square stones , jointed so that perfectly fit among them. The great baths surmounted by vaults and by square stones, were furnished by the aqueduct of Santa Maria di Licodia.

It is a big palace in front of the Mother Church, built in the XVIII century. Inside this building there are some important municipal offices.

MISTERBIANCO IS IN THE ITALIAN REGION SICILY AND IT IS IN THE EAST OF SICILY. IT'S NEAR THE SEA AND THE VOLCANO ETNA. IT IS VERY NEAR THE CITY CATANIA.
