At the core of any state, as we all know, there must be a democratic government to avoid disastrous social repercussions and a massive public opinion backlash. For instance, no matter how advantageous a dictatorship may be to the country's economy, it deprives its citizen of their basic rights to ideological diversity and politcal freedom, and it's bound to face intense criticism from the international press, despite not allowing any within its confines. Without democracy, there is only chaos, for the people should decide for themselves in the best interest of their motherland, have lawful rights and be free. Democratic participation is a way for the people to influence the decisions of those who represent them in the eyes of the law; participating in the country's political life can be done just by voting, signing petitions, or addressing directly those in charge to request changes in laws, even by protesting against the unfairness of a given institution. It is both a citizen's right and duty to participate in politics and keep an eye on how government representatives use their power: politically active citizens contribute to keeping a democracy alive, by constantly researching, questioning, voting and sometimes objecting. If all the citizens never personally took action and just passively accepted every abuse of power or injustice of any sort unfolding before their eyes, showing no interest in actively contributing to their country's wellbeing (and ultimately their own), democracy would collapse in no time and dishonesty, corruption and moral degradation would thrive. Which is why it's fundamental for all of us to be socially and politically active anyway we can, and elect ourselves the government we'd like to see, and most importantly remain well informed on current events as well as historical ones, because he who knows history won't repeat past wrongdoings
