Welcome to the Icefjord Centre. The Icefjord Centre is a house holding many stories of ice and life with the ice. The Centre is located at Ilulissat in Greenland.

When there is polar darkness in Ilulissat from 30 November till 12 January, it is the moonlight, the stars and the northern lights that make the natural light in these winter months. 13 January the light returns again to Ilulissat and this happens when the Earth rotates, so that the electromagnetic waves of the Sun hit the Earth. Because that is what light is: electromagnetic waves from the Sun. Light is a must for life on Earth, we use energy from the light of the Sun for almost everything we do. So there is a good reason to celebrate the light.

Here is Ilulissat

The star which we call the Sun, is the centre of our solar system. All the planets of the solar system circle the Sun. Our solar system is part of a galaxy called the Milky Way. All the stars we see in the night sky belong to the Milky Way. There are eight planets in the solar system: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. At the same time as the Earth circles the Sun, it also rotates on its own axis. This rotation you will learn more about in the video on page 23.

Now you will listen to a podcast, called The Light Returns. The podcast takes place on Holms Bakke, also called Seqinniarfik. It means "The place where the Sun is bid welcome". When the Sun is bid welcome, it means that the light has returned after a long period of darkness. It is celebrated by singing, eating cake and drinking coffee.
