Switzerland is a country famous for its natural beauty. Thus, it is really not misleading to call it heaven on earth! It is definitely one of the most suitable countries to visit during holidays. Personally, I love to visit Switzerland during Winter.&nbsp; In fact, I have been to Switzerland twice to enjoy the snow with my friends and family. With my friends, we explored Zurich, Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, Lucerne, Berne and Zermatt. However, I had to skip Zermatt while travelling with my family due to the distance, and since my brother sprained his ankle, a few days before our Europe trip. In both trips, walking around Grindelwald and Interlaken with Christmas decorations and ginger breads gives me a feeling of walking in a Fairy tale land, where Santa and the elves hide. Interlaken and Grindelwald are both charming alpine towns with many activities to do. For me, both places are suitable for you to relax and meditate. My friends and I stayed in Interlaken before continuing our journey to the Jungfrau region. We also had a nice time playing on top of Mount Titlis. At night, the starry skies in this country made me feel like the stars were within my hand’s reach, almost touching them. Very near to you. Other than the scenery, the most favourite thing I enjoyed in Switzerland is its patisseries, especially bread filled with vanilla cream. I am glad I got the opportunity to visit such a beautiful country, as Allah said in the Quran {55:13} “Then which of your Lord’s favours will you deny?”.

Bamford, Sheffield (5 Sept). Aku kagum dengan anak yang baru 2 tahun bertapak di sana tetapi gigih mencari dan mengatur destinasi untuk membawa aku melawat tempat orang. Setelah hilang lelah berhimpit dalam penerbangan yang panjang (hanya mampu beli tiket kelas ekonomi), keesokan harinya kami bertolak ke Bamford. Di sini kami berpeluang melihat alam semulajadi yang damai. Bamford merupakan sebuah perkampungan kecil, didiami oleh komuniti yang tidak ramai jumlahnya dan penduduknya rata-rata bertani. Setelah lebih kurang 1 jam perjalanan menaiki keretapi dengan jarak 40 km dari Manchester, kami pun sampai ke destinasi. Turun dari tren, kabus, sunyi, tiada kelibat manusia, platform stesen pun ringkas. Aku cuak juga, kerana kami berpakat tinggalkan passport di rumah, jadi sekiranya terjadi apa-apa maka identiti kami lambat dikesan. Kemudian terlintas pula di fikiran, bumi yang indah ini Allah yang punya, tetiba aku jadi kuat dan terus mengatur langkah yang tidak pasti hendak ke kiri atau ke kanan untuk mencari jalan keluar ke perkampungan. Akhirnya anak aku buka talipon bimbitnya dan mencari arah ke taman negara Bamford. Dalam kami berjalan sambil melihat kiri kanan pemandangan yang asing bagi kami, seorang wanita Inggeris lebih separuh umur yang sedang membawa anjingnya bersiar-siar menegur “are you lost”. Anak aku terangkan tujuan/destinasi kami, wanita inggeris itu sambung menerangkan bahawa kalau mendaki tebing di atas sana dapat melihat keseluruhan perkampungan tersebut. Matanya terus memandang pada aku, aku segera membaca pandangan kilat tetapi jujur itu, ya aku pasti aku tidak mampu mendaki dalam usia begini. Katanya lagi, ada sebuah sungai dan ladang sekiranya pergi ke bawah (sambil tangannya menunjuk arah) berjalan kaki dalam tempoh 7-8 minit. Jadi kami memilih untuk ke sungai. MasyaAllah cantiknya ciptaan Tuhan, Sungai yang jernih dan sejuk airnya, berbatu, landai, dan terdapat banyak itik yang cerah warna hijaunya bercampur jingga dan coklat gelap keperang-perangan. Itik-itik tersebut seolah-olah terapung di permukaan sungai, ke sana ke mari dengan tenang, ada yang sedang mencari makanan, menangkap anak ikan kecil mungkin. Bunyi air yang melolosi batu kedengaran tenang dan damai. Lama kami di situ, mujur kami membawa bekal roti, sandwic dan air minuman.

Setelah puas menikmati bunyi deruan air dan suasana damai di gigi air sungai, kami pun bergerak untuk mencari restoran. Dari jauh kelihatan seorang wanita tempatan yang dah lanjut usia dalam lingkungan 80an sedang menunggu bas. Aku sarankan anak aku untuk menegur wanita tersebut, tetapi dia lebih tertarik pada seekor kucing liar yang tak semena-mena melintas. Untuk pengetahuan semua, jarang-jarang sekali dapat melihat kelibat kucing/anjing liar di sana. Tentu ada perancangan kerajaan mereka untuk memelihara persekitaran, sehinggakan anjing yang dibawa bersiar-siar hendaklah dipungut najisnya atau tuan anjing tersebut akan didenda. Berbalik kepada wanita tempatan lanjut usia tadi, aku pun menegurnya, positif, dia membalas dengan senyuman. Boleh tunjukkkan di mana restoran di sini, aju aku. 

Oh, tiada restoran di sini, saya pun mahu ke Sheffield untuk membeli-belah, balasnya. Panjang lagi perbulannya tetapi telinga aku hanya dapat menangkap beberapa butir perkataan awal seperti yang aku simpulkan tadi. Aku dah terlalu lama tinggalkan bahasa Inggeris, terakhir semasa SPM mengarang esei untuk matapelajaran Bahasa Inggeris. Lebih-lebih lagi wanita peramah tadi penduduk kampung yang agak terpencil, sudah tentu telor bahasanya berlainan. Kami sama-sama menaiki bas selama 20 minit menuju ke Sheffield. Aku suka bandar ini kerana ianya lebih tenang, bersih dan cantik. Uniknya, pasaraya di Sheffield dipenuhi oleh warga emas yang bergerak perlahan, ada yang menggunakan tongkat sambil berbelanja, manakala di Manchester lebih hiruk pikuk dengan warga mudanya yang ramai bertatoo dan bertindik selagi ada ruang di muka.

London (7,8,9 Sep). Kata orang tidak sah kalau ke UK tetapi tak singgah di London. Jadi aku pun mengesahkan kata-kata tersebut selama 3 hari 2 malam bermusafir di kotaraya London. Anak aku memilih untuk bermalam di hotel Wembley di London. Pada pukul 10:00 pagi 8 September semasa bergambar di hadapan istana Buckingham, berita mengenai Queen Elizabeth II sedang nazak melintas di skrin talipon bimbit anak aku. Tidak banyak yang difikirkan mengenai seorang hamba Allah yang berusia 96 tahun sedang nazak, ianya sesuatu yang natural dan tidak dapat dielakkan. Juga tidak banyak yang akan aku muatkan mengenai London kerana kotaraya ini dah menjadi satu destinasi wajib pada yang berkunjung ke UK. Di awal teks aku mengatakan untuk memuatkan hal sisi gelap, maka inilah London, termasuk Manchester dan di mana- mana sahaja, pengguna jalan raya yang berjalan kaki rata-rata tidak begitu mematuhi lampu isyarat melintas. Senario ini adalah sesuatu yang janggal pada mata aku yang menjangkakan betapa berhemahnya warga negara maju apabila berada di tempat awam. Sedangkan warga Malaysia lebih taat pada lampu isyarat inikan pula rakyat Jepun yang terkenal dengan tinggi kedisiplinannya, ianya bukan perbandingan dengan keletah warga Britain apabila melintasi jalan raya yang sibuk. Sekali lagi aku tetap memilih hujan batu yang turunnya pasti ada hikmah. Senja dalam perjalanan pulang, sekali lagi berita besar singgah di skrin talipon, baginda Ratu Elizabeth II mangkat pada pukul 6:30 petang. Skrin besar di stesen Wembley memaparkan kata-kata selamat tinggal dan bendera dikibarkan separuh tiang pada malam itu juga.

In 2010, when my husband was on his sabbatical leave to the United Kingdom, he brought along our family.&nbsp; While we were there, we decided to do some traveling since we were in the region. Armed with three young children aged from 4 to 10 who had different behaviours ranging from obedient to active and inquisitive, we took them on a&nbsp; trip to Belgium, France, The Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Italy, Vatican City, Switzerland and Austria. Here I would like to share some tips that fellow parents can benefit from when travelling with young children. Long flights, road trips and bus travels can make children particularly restless. Thus it is important to keep them occupied and entertained. Before travelling think of suitable activities that can be done when in different modes of transportation. Examples of road trip games are ‘number plate game’ and ‘I spy’. If using a tour bus, allow your child to make friends with his or her age group. On long flights, other than enjoying the in-flight movies, bring along a light toy and occasionally engage your child in child friendly activities on iPad. Should your child have to use this gadget, put on a headphone on him or her so that the fellow passengers are not disturbed.&nbsp;

Book tickets for entry attractions in advance. Not only can you enjoy discounts, but also time and most importantly avoid the lines.&nbsp; A stroller and an anti-lost wrist harness are also very useful during sightseeing. Avoid carrying valuables when holding a child in crowded places.&nbsp; This is easy prey for pickpockets. Most pickpockets work in a group to plan and execute distractions. When we were in Rome, my husband was pickpocketed 500 Euros when he was attending to our youngest child.&nbsp; Always make sure you arm yourself with easy to store and favourite travel snacks such as crackers, granola bars, fruits, cereal and drinks. Bring along Ziploc bags so that you can keep unfinished snacks. In Europe, nowadays it is quite easy to get Halal food. There are always kebabs or shawarmas stalls sold in the cities. Alternatively, Muslim travellers can simply go for food in the supermarkets marked ‘vegetarian’ for consumption. When trying out local food, ensure that it is hygienically prepared. Getting diarrhea or stomachache can be common when travelling. It is best to bring along medications for common illnesses.

Stress Management

The French Language Club of Universiti Teknologi MARA Cawangan Pulau Pinang held its first virtual emotional and mental well-being talk via Google Meet on the 5th of December 2022 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The main purpose of the talk is to raise awareness among university students on the importance of mental well-being. A registered and licensed counsellor, Miss Lee Phei Wei has been invited as a guest speaker to share her professional thoughts on stress management. She graduated with a Masters in Counselling Psychology from Universiti Malaysia Sabah, and has been working in this field for more than five years. She has had experiences working with multinational clientele and public community, focusing on emotion regulation and bereavement.&nbsp; The talk began with an opening speech by the moderator, Miss Syahindah Shamsudin. Next, a short French video clip showing a stressed single working mother was played. Then, the counsellor connected the video clip with the main topic, stress. In the talk, self-assessment was concentrated on rather than the detailed explanation of stress. Some fun activities were carried out, such as a memory game, BINGO and Snakes and Ladders. The memory game exposed the audience to minimal pressure and stress. Then, the audience learned more about their stress responses by playing BINGO. Finally, the guest speaker ended the talk by sharing several stress coping tips using the Snakes and Ladders game.&nbsp;

In the same book, the authors gave a good analogy about helping ourselves before helping others.&nbsp; Think of the oxygen masks which drop from the ceiling of the plane.&nbsp; In the announcement, the flight attendants always ask us to secure our masks first before helping others.&nbsp; Why do they say so?&nbsp; It is because it is normal human nature to like to HELP others. &nbsp; Sometimes, we go out of our way helping others but REMEMBER, we can’t help anyone when we are dead.&nbsp; So, think of the 2-hour meeting as our oxygen mask and schedule it NOW! 😊

Pinterest-ing yourself with challenges! Those who are familiar with Pinterest would know that it has various challenges and ideas that you can use to make your life more interesting.&nbsp; There are many types of challenges such as good vibes challenges, happy morning challenges, self-care challenges and many others!&nbsp; Normally, most challenges involve 30 days as it can take anywhere from 18 to 254 days for a new behavior to become automatic.&nbsp; As we know, it is easier said than done.&nbsp; That is the reason why I am suggesting that we try attempting the challenges on Pinterest to kick-start.&nbsp; For example, if you are planning to become a minimalist and don’t know where to begin, try the 30-day minimalism challenge.&nbsp; You would be able to learn about minimalism as you take-up the challenge and indirectly it helps in creating a new behaviour - towards becoming a minimalist!&nbsp; As days go by, it is satisfying to tick the list upon completion of&nbsp; the challenges.&nbsp;

Am I suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder?

Collecting items is an interesting hobby.&nbsp; Items can easily be made up of stamps, money, old memorable things such as phones, cameras etc.&nbsp; Apparently, accumulating items of interest sounds reasonable but having a stockpile at home so to speak that “these collectors” can’t use their home for the intended purpose – becomes problematic.&nbsp;&nbsp; That is what we call – HOARDING.&nbsp; Is it normal to gather uncountable items and be classified as untidy or is it a serious disorder?&nbsp; According to the American Psychiatric Association (2013) people with hoarding disorder have persistent difficulty getting rid of or parting with possessions due to a perceived need to save the items. Attempts to part with possessions create considerable distress and lead to decisions to save them. The resulting clutter disrupts the ability to use living spaces. Therefore, collecting and hoarding are two separate situations altogether.&nbsp; Collecting usually is more structured.&nbsp; Items collected are subject to being organized, admired, and displayed to others.&nbsp; Objects collected by hoarders on the other hand lack a consistent theme.&nbsp; They are more impulsive and lack organization which leads to a messy clutter!&nbsp;&nbsp; Hoarding is not a habit anyone would love to develop yet ONE hoards.&nbsp; Why is that so?&nbsp; Do they gain a kick out of it?&nbsp; The answer is a definite ‘no’.&nbsp; The dark side of hoarding is despite the many other factors related to it; depression is one of it.&nbsp; Dr Sabine Koehler, a professional Association of German Neurologists chairwoman, stated that hoarding is classified as a compulsive disorder and is more common in people with other psychological disorders, such as depression.

Everything Under the Sun (TED-style Talk)

Grab the Mic @ UiTMCPP, an event that aimed to promote a culture of idea sharing was successfully organised by the Chemical Engineering Student Society (ChESS) of Universiti Teknologi MARA UiTM, Cawangan Pulau Pinang (UiTMCPP) on the 10th November 2022.&nbsp; Ms Marni Jamil, a lecturer from the Academy of Language Studies, UiTMCPP who is also a public speaking instructor delivered an uplifting speech titled ‘Everything Under the Sun’, which focused on the development of tertiary students’ knowledge and skills. The TED-style talk held at the SUDI Cafeteria, UiTMCPP, garnered the interest of members of the university community who were aptly present during lunchtime. It brought forth ideas that encouraged people in academia to reflect on the significance of upskilling, strategic collaboration and visibility.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The value of teamwork was highlighted through the emphasis on linkages creation by inspiring them to accomplish greater heights together and fostering a sense of camaraderie. Moreover, moving forward in the digital arena, exhibiting and expressing one's work via digital platforms is without a doubt an essence of the future. Overall, the event has amplified a sense of hope and empowerment to unleash the true potential of individuals.

Have you finished marking your students’ essays? How about the article for our next webinar? Have you completed the revision for the Scopus paper? The due date for FRGS application is tomorrow and is your proposal ready? If you are my colleague, these questions are our ‘normal’ greetings to one another. Whether we realize it or not, work occupies a large segment of our daily time that we barely have time to squeeze in for any other activities. If you think that keeping busy is good, think again, as it is actually counterproductive! This ‘hustle’ culture is unfortunately damaging not only our physical being, but our mental health as well. Anxiety and depression are reported to be increasing, along with the pressure to always be productive. If you do not want to drown in work and lose your sense of identity, read on. Let’s discover the ancient art of doing NOTHING.&nbsp; If you have watched Julia Roberts’ Eat, Pray, Love – I’m sure you are aware of the famous Italian phrase ‘Il Dolce Far Niente’- which means ‘the sweetness of doing nothing’. It is believed to exist since the 18th century, and this phrase pertinently embodies the Italian lifestyle. Apart from the Italians, this concept is also no stranger to the Dutch, whose ‘Niksen’ is considered an art to be comprehensively practiced. The word Niksen originated from ‘Niks’ - Dutch for ‘nothing’. Both phrases accentuate the importance of finding pleasure in doing nothing in particular but be mindful that it is far from being lazy. This concept allows you to take the time off, be idle, or simply give yourself a chance to breathe. Doing nothing could potentially do wonders for your health, and in the process, improve your life in more ways than you can imagine.&nbsp; Working ourselves to death, pushing our own limits to the brink of pure exhaustion will only lead to burn out, health and mental issues. This is where ‘Dolce Far Niente’ or Niksen plays its part, by encouraging us to contemplate, relax, and recharge to ensure the recovery of our brain function, at least for the day. In addition, it helps you to get in touch with your intuition while also releasing suppressed emotions. Learning to relax ensures the restoration of balance and enhances the possibility of discovering our most creative inner-self. Undeniably, doing nothing is indeed overwhelming as we (especially Asians) have been programmed to be productive and to feel guilty if we are not doing something. Therefore, the most crucial part of practicing this concept is by letting go of the guilt. Remember that our time is ours to make the most of. Try to disconnect and switch off from the chaotic world and if it is too much to take, start with taking only a short amount of time from your daily schedule. Here are some suggestions: =&gt;Stare out of a window in your home =&gt;Zone out in the bath, without any music or books =&gt;Slot in at least one evening during the week where you don't have any plans - and just do whatever you feel like at the time, even if that's just sitting on the sofa, relaxing

Penubuhan JMTi Institut Teknikal Jepun – Malaysia (Bahasa Inggeris: Japan Malaysia Technical Institute, JMTi) adalah sebuah institut yang telah ditubuhkan dengan kerjasama teknikal antara kerajaan Malaysia dan kerajaan Jepun. Idea penubuhannya telah dicadangkan oleh Unit Perancang Ekonomi (EPU) Jabatan Perdana Menteri pada tahun 1994. JMTi secara rasminya telah ditubuhkan pada tahun 1998 dan diletakkan di bawah pentadbiran Jabatan Tenaga Manusia (JTM), Kementerian Sumber Manusia (KSM). JMTi ditubuhkan bertujuan untuk melahirkan tenaga kerja yang berketerampilan dan berpengetahuan dengan menyediakan latihan kemahiran di peringkat tinggi dalam bidang teknologi termaju sejajar dengan keperluan teknologi semasa dalam sektor perindustrian. Kampus JMTi terletak di Taman Perindustrian Bukit Minyak, Seberang Perai dan menawarkan kursus latihan peringkat sijil, diploma dan diploma lanjutan dalam bidang teknologi kejuruteraan. SEPTEMBER 1995: Lawatan ke Malaysia oleh ‘Japanese Preliminary Survey Mission Team’ yang terdiri daripada sembilan anggota dan diketuai oleh En. Shioji. Sempena ulangtahun ke-25 beroperasinya JMTi, majlis sambutan jubli perak telah dijalankan pada 18 Oktober 2022. Saya sebagai bekas tenaga pengajar bahasa Jepun dan sekarang sebagai salah seorang penasihat teknikal AJK kecil institut tersebut telah dilantik sebagai penasihat program. Program yang dimaksudkan ialah satu badan perancang majlis yang diamanahkan untuk mengendalikan istiadat minum teh. Dalam budaya Jepun, upacara minum teh merupakan adat dan budaya yang penuh dengan seni dan diamalkan di majlis-majlis rasmi. Puan Rosmawati yang merupakan pensyarah bahasa Jepun dijemput untuk menjayakan upacara tersebut.	 Istiadat minum teh telah dijalankan pada pukul 11.00 pagi di mana penyediaan teh untuk para tetamu VIP dimulakan dengan menggunakan teh serbuk matcha yang dibuat daripada teh hijau yang digiling halus. Istiadat minum teh di Jepun banyak mengandungi makna kehidupan. Setiap gerakan dalam&nbsp; istiadat tersebut membawa makna tersendiri.&nbsp; Ia harus dilakukan dengan amat berhati-hati dan penuh kesabaran dan tidak boleh tergesa-gesa.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Tetamu yang akan meminum teh pun tidak boleh melakukannya sembarangan. Cawan atau mangkuk teh yang disajikan diletakkan dengan sangat berhati-hati kerana yang menyajikan harus memastikan corak atau motif terbaik pada cawan teh tersebut haruslah menghadap ke arah tetamu. Oleh kerana itu adalah sisi yang paling baik, adalah tidak sopan sekiranya tetamu terus minum teh dari sisi tersebut. Jadi tetamu harus memutar cawan teh agar posisi sisi tersebut menghadap tuan rumah sebagai tanda terima kasih dan menghormati.

As one the longest reigning monarchs, many grew up recognising her as the head of state of the UK and the Commonwealth. The demise of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has saddened many people including fellow Malaysians. Thus, it is natural for&nbsp; people from all over the world and walks of life to express outpouring of condolence wishes to her family and the people of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. One of the common wishes is RIP, which is&nbsp; requiescat in pace in Latin or stands for Rest in Peace in English, often engraved&nbsp; on gravestones or written in obituaries.&nbsp; The use of ‘rest in peace’ has somewhat sparked a debate in the country - whether Muslims can offer such condolence to deceased non-Muslims. Mustafa Akyol, a Turkish scholar, asserts that Muslims can say "rest in peace" to non-Muslims who have passed away, adding that God's mercy is not confined to Muslims. According to Akyol, his viewpoint, which was also shared by other prominent theologians, was founded on two almost similar passages in the Quran, in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 62 and Surah Al-Maidah, verse 69 where Allah says, “Indeed, the believers, Jews, Christians, and Sabians—whoever ˹truly˺ believes in Allah and the Last Day and does good will have their reward with their Lord. And there will be no fear for them, nor will they grieve”. &nbsp; There are many ways to express sympathy to the family members of the deceased. If possible, attend the funeral or memorial service. Send kind words and messages by calling them or sending a text message or a condolence card stating, “I am sorry for your loss”, “My deepest condolences to you and family”, “You are in my thoughts”, or share a meaningful memory of the person who died; “S(he) (cite the name of the deceased) was a wonderful person”. Next, offer your support and inquire as to how you may be of assistance. Sending funeral flowers as a gift of condolence is a way to show your sorrow and say goodbye to the deceased. Listening emphatically to the mourning individual allows them to express what is on their mind and aid the healing process. Finally, donating to a charity or organisation that your loved one supports leaves a legacy for the deceased.&nbsp; Islam encourages Muslims to express condolences in accordance with the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) Sunnah. It is improper to weep and grumble with the intention of expressing unhappiness with Allah; mourners should maintain their patience,&nbsp; saying a few words and recite a dua (prayer) for the departed. One of them is a phrase from Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 156, “Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un” to mean “Surely we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return”. Other ways include performing janazah (funeral) prayer and sadaqah (donating) on behalf of the deceased.&nbsp; There are many things you may say or do to help, but it is important to keep in mind that the grieving process is unique to each individual. In the wake of a loss, some of the above words of condolence and appropriate actions can be a tremendous solace.&nbsp;

Kalau di Jepun lampu isyarat jalan raya begini, kalau di Jepun budaya membeli orangnya begini, kalau, kalau dan kalau. Maaflah anakku yang dengar dengan tekun dan sabar sambil membawa aku mengelilingi premis “The University of Manchester”. Sebenarnya apa yang aku perkatakan tentang budaya, lampu isyarat dan sebagainya bukanlah merupakan sebuah perbandingan, tetapi itulah yang dinamakan Jauh perjalanan luas pemandangan. Kebanyakannya tiada baik yang itu atau buruk yang ini, kerana ianya bersesuaian dengan pandangan dan cara sesuatu komuniti itu bertindak terhadap sesuatu yang ditetapkan oleh pihak berkuasa negara berkenaan. Baik, dalam wadah ini aku tidak akan menceritakan hal biasa yang anda dapat lalui sekiranya sudah atau akan ke UK, sebaliknya aku akan memuatkan cerita sisi gelap (lebih tepat lagi hal yang tak terjangka berlaku) yang aku lalui semasa menjelajahi bumi UK. The University of Manchester (3,4 Sep). Kebanyakkan Universiti di UK tidak berpagar, ianya berkonsepkan universiti dalam bandar, bukan universiti atau bandar dalam taman seperti di tempat kita. Tidak berpagar bererti tiada pondok keselamatan dan tiada susuk pengawal keselamatan yang dapat dilihat. Yang dipanggil “makcik cleaner” di tempat kita pun tidak kelihatan di sekitar menara gading yang aku jelajahi. Ini tidak bererti ianya satu lokasi yang selamat tanpa pencuri. Apa yang hendak aku sampaikan ialah, semasa cuti semester, semua bangunan berkunci, tak pasti pula para pensyarah bekerja dari rumah atau bagaimana. Yang pasti tiada kelibat yang masuk keluar bangunan, tidak nampak juga susuk manusia dalam bangunan, yang kelihatan adalah tingkap, pintu, bumbung, tiang dan dinding yang sunyi, kaku, bisu, aaaa gitu.

Assalamualaikum semua, kalau aku dulu bercerita tentang pengalaman belajar di Jepun, kali ini nak khabarkan tentang perjalanan singkat ke bumi Kerajaan Bersatu Britain Raya, United Kingdom of Great Britain. Pada mulanya agak keberatan nak ke sana kerana kekangan waktu dan tugasan hakiki yang belum selesai sepenuhnya. Walau bagaimanapun memandangkan tempoh anak berada di sana berbaki setahun cuma, aku tekad menempah tiket penerbangan, hotel, keretapi dan sebagainya yang mana jumlahnya melebihi bajet asal. Oleh kerana tempoh pembelian tiket pesawat terhad, atau kerana ramainya jumlah penumpang setelah dikurung lama akibat (PKP), atau kerana banyak negeri yang sudah buka sempadan dan mempromosikan pelancongan, mungkin juga kerana ramai yang ingin ke destinasi yang sama dan banyak lagi sebab-sebabnya, maka “your ticket is high” terpapar peringatan ditulis besar di skrin komputer riba. Teringat pesanan orang lama - duit boleh dicari….(masukkan situasi bersesuaian) tiada galang ganti. Maka sambil kami anak beranak memohon doa supaya lancar, maklumlah ‘scammer’ berleluasa sekarang ini, anak aku pun menekan butang “buy”, “ok” dan seterusnya. Jadi, pada tanggal 3hb Sep setelah 19 jam perjalanan, berpijak aku di bumi Kerajaan Bersatu Britain Raya (selepas ini disebut UK). Cuaca 12 celcius, sejuk, aku mula membanding-bandingkan suhu sewaktu mula tiba di Jepun sebagai seorang pelajar dulu. Maklumlah Jepun merupakan destinasi luar negara yang pertama aku jejak. Bukan mengenai cuaca sahaja, hal-hal lain juga secara spontan akan menjadi perbandingan dalam minda aku dan ianya terpacul di bibir.

Tetapi ramai sahaja samada orang awam atau pelajar sendiri yang lalu lalang atau berehat di taman universiti tersebut.Lanskapnya tersusun kemas dan bunga berkembang dengan segar, iyalah negara musim sejuk, maka pepohon yang sesuai dengan cuaca dingin sememangnya hidup subur. Sudut gelapnya, oleh kerana ianya sebuah universiti terbuka maka adakalanya ada individu yang tidak sepatunya berada di situ akan melintas. Mereka akan cuba meminta wang daripada sesiapa sahaja yang dirasakan akan berhasil memberi mereka wang walaupun sedikit. Pendek kata ramai pengemis di negara yang pernah menjajah ¼ daripada negeri-negeri di atas muka bumi ini beberapa abad lalu. Anak yang sedang menuntut disana juga telah diingatkan oleh pensyarahnya supaya jangan mula memberi wang kepada pengemis. Nah! Ini salah satu situasi yang menyebabkan aku memilih hujan batu di negeri sendiri.

Talk with a French Speaker: Series 1

The French Language Club of Universiti Teknologi MARA Cawangan Pulau Pinang held its first cultural and intercultural talk via Google Meet on the 12th of December 2022 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The main purpose of the talk was to share, from a French speaker’s perspective, experiences and insights, about “Francophony” cultures. A French native speaker, Mr. Julien Pierre Bigot was invited as a guest speaker to share his personal thoughts on French and “Francophony” cultures. Mr. Julien graduated from Université Paul Verlaine, France, and has been teaching French as foreign language (FLE) for more than 20 years in Malaysia. He has vast experience working with Malaysian schools and university students.&nbsp; The talk began with an opening speech by the moderator, Miss Aliah Maisarah. The speaker then commenced his session by introducing himself and his profession. Throughout the sharing session, Mr. Julien conveniently related his past experiences of intercultural issues and current practices by the French teachers’ community. Emphasizing on the diversity of French language(s) and culture(s), that originated from different French-speaking countries, the speaker exemplified his remarks with real situations that occurred in the Malaysian French language education landscape. Finally, a quiz was held for the students and the top 3 winners received a Texas Chicken meal voucher each as the reward.

Sukan Malaysia 2022 athletic events were held from 15 – 18 September 2022 at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium Kuala Lumpur. The 2022 SUKMA Games, officially known as the 20th SUKMA Games and commonly known as MSN 2022, was a multi-sport event that was originally scheduled to be held in Johor in July 2020. Due to COVID-19 and MCO, the event was postponed and later hosted by Kuala Lumpur.&nbsp; AP Dr. Hoe Foo Terng, a senior lecturer from the Mandarin Unit, Academy of Language Studies who is also a qualified national grade 1 track and field KOAM (Malaysia Amateur Athletic Union) technical officer since 2004, was appointed as a track judge by Majlis Sukan Negara Malaysia. His involvement in athletics began in 1996 in Selangor. He has also served as a technical officer in other sporting events such as the SEA Games 2017, Penang Bridge Marathon, MSSM, and MSSPP.&nbsp; There were 44 events in the 2022 SUKMA Games. A total of 132 medals were up for grabs.&nbsp; Johor was crowned the overall champion, with 9 gold, 6 silver and 7 bronze. The 1st runner up was Sabah with 7 gold, 8 silver and 3 bronze. Sarawak became the 2nd runner up, securing 5 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze. Penang was ranked 8th and obtained 2 gold.

Madam Nazima Versay Kudus was appointed the head of the project along with other team members which included&nbsp; Mr Noor Azli Affendy Lee, Madam Wan Noorli Razali and Madam Nur Afiqah Ab Latif. It was a 2-day workshop which was held at the Park Avenue Hotel, Sungai Petani from September 20-22, 2022.&nbsp;

Various aspects were focused in the workshop.&nbsp; Madam Wan Noorli's session was concentrated on ‘Ice Breaking’ and ‘Giving Feedbacks' meanwhile Madam Nazima’s session was directed towards ‘Teaching Styles’ and ‘Delivery Techniques’.&nbsp; The other two consultants namely Mr Azli and&nbsp; Madam Nur Afiqah were entrusted to speak on ‘Using Visual Aids and Constructing Tests’ and ‘Essential Academic Grammar and Facilitating Student Note-Taking’ respectively.&nbsp; The workshop involved lectures, discussions and hand-ons sessions to enable participants&nbsp;gauge their understanding on the subject matter effectively. Positive feedback was gained from the workshop participants in which one of them, Madam Emilia Muhd, pointed out the new-knowledge gained on the awareness to amalgamate various teaching styles to accommodate different learning styles among students. Mr Mohd Nazry Mohd Yunos learned that constructing tests using technology is beneficial as it offers real-time reporting of results. It is hoped the sessions have helped participants in gaining insights to improve their English language competency and pedagogical skills.

Edinburgh, Scotland (13,14,15 Sep). Bandar tercantik setakat yang aku sempat lawati selama menjelajahi bumi UK. Tidak hairanlah Edinburgh (Edin) menerima ramai pengunjung. Edin juga merupakan tempat bermulanya sistem monarki di England. Tidak hairanlah terdapat banyak istana dan gereja yang dibina berkurun lamanya namun masih utuh hingga sekarang. Ianya merupakan tarikan utama para pelancong dalam dan luar negara. Edin juga lebih tenang, boleh dikatakan sepanjang 3 hari berada di Edin, tiada kelibat penyeluk saku kelihatan. Kami juga mendapat info daripada penduduk tempatan bahawa Edin merupakan bandar paling rendah kadar jenayah dan selamat untuk bersiar-siar, moga-moga telahannya itu benar. Aku akui reka bentuk bangunan di Edin memang memukau, sekiranya anda berpeluang ke UK, jangan melepaskan peluang untuk ke Edin. Matawang Scotland berbeza dengan pound yang digunakan di tempat-tempat yang aku lawati sebelum ini. Nilainya lebih tinggi sedikit berbanding nilai pound dan menurut penjual yang kami singgah minum, bukan semua kedai di Manchester menerima mata wang Scotland. Mungkin kerana jarak yang jauh atau kedai di Manchester tiada cawangan di Edin. Aku tak nak fikir hal tersebut, tiada kepentingan pada aku. Di Edin kami singgah solat di masjid yang tersergam indah, bersih dan moden. Apabila masuk waktu solat zohor, kelihatan seorang anak tempatan yang tampan dalam lingkungan usia 14/15 tahun berlari masuk ke dalam masjid untuk solat. Ya Allah, di tempat yang serba moden, bebas melakukan apa sahaja Engkau sisipkan hidayahMu ke dalam hati anak muda yang polos kelihatan wajahnya. Aku mula mereka cerita yang berkemungkinan di dalam minda, kenapa anak muda tersebut memilih untuk bersolat di masjid? Selain daripada jarak masjid dekat dengan rumahnya (mungkin sahaja), mungkin kerana mahu mengaut sebanyak mungkin pahala solat berjemaah atau mungkin juga dia mendapat tentangan keluarga kerana memilih Islam (siapa tahu keluarganya juga asalnya Islam). Itulah telahan yang bersilih ganti mengambil tempat dalam minda aku ketika itu.

Okay, sekarang kita sentuh sisi gelap pula, aku kira tiada yang buruk berlaku di Edin, rupa-rupanya Allah susun supaya aku dapat lalui satu pengalaman yang dilakukan oleh orang Islam sendiri di dalam masjid. Walau bagaimanapun aku memilih untuk tidak viralkan kisah tersebut di eLingua. Mungkin pada orang lain ianya tidak seburuk seperti yang aku sangkakan, manusia kan berbeza-beza cara pandang dan pegangannya. Pada yang mungkin ingin tahu apa yang berlaku bolehlah kita sambung bercerita di café dengan izinNya. Pada 17hb kami berehat sahaja di Manchester sementara menunggu tarikh 18hb untuk terbang pulang ke tanah air. Kesimpulannya, aku akhiri dengan serangkap pantun ciptaan: Sehebat-hebatnegara barat, Ianya hanya destinasi singgahan, Seburuk-buruk bagaikan melarat, Di sinilah hayat dikandung badan. Aku teringat akan kata-kata cerdik pandai iaitu, sejauh-jauh terbang bangau akhirnya pulang ke belakang kerbau jua, maka selagi kerbau sudi menadah belakangnya, pulanglah kamu wahai bangau-bangau!!

Treatment and care There is currently no treatment available to cure dementia. Anti-dementia medication and disease-modifying therapies have limited efficiency and are labeled for Alzheimer’s disease. The principal goals for dementia care are: =&gt; Early diagnosis in order to promote early optimal management =&gt; Optimizing physical health, cognition, activity and well-being =&gt; Identifying and treating accompanying physical illness =&gt; Understanding and managing behavior changes Providing information and long-term support to carers. Risk factors and prevention Studies showed that people can reduce the risk of cognitive decline and dementia by being physically active, not smoking, avoiding harmful use of alcohol, controlling body weight, eating a healthy and balanced diet and maintaining healthy blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Other additional risk factors for dementia besides aging are depression, social isolation, low educational attainment, cognitive inactivity and air pollution.

Conclusion Since dementia is a disease that occurs naturally and sadly there is no treatment for it, it is our responsibility as caregivers to patients or even to ourselves in future to slow down the progress of dementia.

As it is a disease that affects the brain's ability to generate signals and responses, in other words ‘cognitive’, any activity that can enhance brain function is said to help dementia patients. For retirees or those over the age of 65, it is recommended to always be active not only physically but also mentally. This group is advised to always think of ways to meet their daily schedule in addition to attending light leisure classes that can make one's time filled with thinking. Caring for dementia patients is a big challenge that not everyone is able to deal with. Therefore, it is recommended that the caregivers attend seminars or courses to strengthen their understanding on patient care and management. One of the early recognitions of dementia is when you start to forget your important daily routine which ends up in a repetitive cycle. A simple example is the misplacement of your car keys. If you often forget where your car keys are stored, whether it is hanging on the wall, in your handbag or in your pocket, then you have the early potential to suffer from dementia. So as a conclusion, always be alert of your important belongings, any repeated misplacement is an indication of an early stage of dementia.

Yorkshire, Skipton (10 Sep). Pada tarikh ini kami menyertai rombongan pelajar luar negara yang dianjurkan oleh “International Society of University of Manchester”. Rombongan kami seramai 33 orang menaiki bas selama 2 jam menuju ke destinasi. Seperti biasa, kiri kanan jalan terpampang suasana kehijauan yang dari jauh kelihatan seperti tompokan biri-biri atau lembu hitam putih yang sedang mengunyah rumput atau beristirehat kekenyangan. Pemandangan ini amat indah kerana haiwan ternakan ini memang selesa dibela ditempat yang ditetapkan, luas, dilepas bebas dan dikawal rapi, dikelilingi oleh pagar elektrik berkuasa rendah. Senario yang tidak terjangkau oleh fikiran warga Britain kalau melawat negara kita kerana kadang-kadang pemandu terpaksa berkongsi jalanraya dengan lembu dan kambing! Di Yorkshire kami melawat penempatan bersejarah dan antara gereja tertua di England. Ianya dibina 850 tahun dahulu dan masih digunakan hingga sekarang. Sudah tentu adanya buku untuk berdoa pada Queen Elizabeth, lilin yang dinyalakan dan di sisinya diletakkan gambar Queen. Sebagai umat islam aku berdoa ringkas begini untuk kematian hamba yang tidak menganut agama Islam, Allah yang menentukan segalanya, setiap umat akan kembali kepadaMu, Amin. Di sudut pintu masuk gereja diletakkan sebuah meja dan memo memohon derma untuk pesakit kanser. Bakul berisi beberapa biji buah epal juga terdapat di atas meja tersebut. Sisi gelap, dalam ramai-ramai pelawat sudah tentu terdapat pelawat tempatan yang berbondong masuk ke gereja. Yang menyedihkan aku ialah tergamak seorang pelawat wanita separuh umur mengambil sebiji apel dan cepat-cepat dimasukkan ke dalam poket seluarnya. Lebih menyedihkan lagi beberapa ahli keluarganya hanya tersenyum dan beredar dari situ. Tiga kejutan berlaku iaitu mengambil barangan sedekah untuk pesakit kanser, keduanya, kejadian berlaku di kawasan pintu masuk gereja dan perkara tersebut dilakukan oleh mereka yang mendakwa bangsa berkulit putih yang merupakan pelopor tamadun di dunia.

Liverpool (11 Sep). Bandar pelabuhan terawal yang menjadi penempatan anak-anak muda Melayu yang bekerja sebagai kelasi kapal suatu ketika dahulu. Terdapat komuniti Melayu yang berkahwin dengan wanita tempatan di pinggir bandar, walau bagaimanapun aku tidak melawat tapak tersebut. Ada dua perkara utama dalam minda aku apabila menyebut tentang Liverpool, iaitu pasukan bola sepak dan kumpulan music rock “The Beatles”. Sisi gelap semasa lawatan ke Liverpool, peristiwa berlaku di pintu masuk stadium bola sepak yang gah,terkedu juga dibuatnya. Dari jauh lebih kurang berjarak 80 meter aku ternampak seorang lelaki berusia dalam lingkungan hujung 40an sedang menyatakan sesuatu kepada beberapa orang yang lalu lalang. Keadaan lelaki itu agak kurang kemas, dan persekitaran pintu masuk stadium tidak menerima ramai pengunjung kerana tiada perlawanan bola sepak dijadualkan pada hari tersebut. Lelaki tersebut menyapa beberapa individu, namun demikian tiada yang berhenti berbual dengannya. Terus aku katakan kepada anakku bahawa di depan sana terdapat seorang peminta sedekah. Laluan kami untuk ke bilik air terhalang, dan tidak semena-mena lelaki tersebut menoleh kepada kami dan segera mengatur langkah menuju ke arah kami. Aku agak panik sambil memeluk lebih erat beg yang sengaja aku galaskan di hadapan, aku bersuara agak kuat kepada anakku supaya mempercepatkan langkah menuju ke luar kawasan stadium. Lelaki tersebut memanjangkan langkah dan memanggil-manggil kami. Aku dan anakku pun hampir berlari-lari anak sehinggalah lelaki tersebut menjerit, “hey don’t you have manners, bastard!”. Aduh, dia yang tidak bersopan kita pula yang diajukan ucapan biadap. Kesimpulannya, aku rasa UK merupakan sebuah negara maju tetapi ramai warganya yang samada tidak terhambat dek kemajuan, mengambil bahan terlarang atau malas berusaha sehingga terpaksa meminta-minta.

Travelling is a great way for children to be exposed to different cultures. I was frequently asked by my children questions such as, ‘Why are ancient Greek statues naked?’, ‘Why do the tourists toss coins in the Trevi Fountain’, ‘Why is the Pope not there after queuing for hours to get into the Sistine Chapel?’. Since there were no smartphones back then, I have to skim through the tourist brochures for answers.&nbsp;&nbsp; Adults and children do not share the same interest when travelling. Visiting museums and historical attractions may not appeal to young children. When travelling it is important to include activities that fascinate children too.&nbsp; Playing in a playground at a stopover somewhere is more fun. The rides of Disneyland Paris thrilled them more.&nbsp;

There are of course a lot more tips than these. Above all, preparation and patience are important when travelling with young children. However, experimenting with something completely different on the spur of the moment can add to excitement too. Now that my children are all grown up, maybe it is time to pack the bags and hit the road (perhaps this time without them)!

Is tea your cup of tea? If the answer is “yes”, you will probably enjoy sitting down for afternoon tea. As its name suggests, afternoon tea is usually served between 3.00 pm to 6.00 pm. Restaurants serving pastries, coffee and tea might offer afternoon tea sets with choices of sweet and savory pastries. Afternoon tea is basically a meal after a meal to satisfy “that sinking feeling” and it is quite different to another in between meals called, “high tea”. According to “Top 12 Best 

High Tea in Penang 2022” (2022), the mouth watering pastries such as&nbsp;scones, sandwiches, and cakes that are served for day tea in the middle of the day is called “afternoon tea”. High tea, in contrast, is served in the early evening and has much heartier fare such as meat, poultry,&nbsp;fish, and egg delicacies apart from&nbsp;bread and sweets treats.&nbsp; If you have read the book, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, an 1865 English novel by Lewis Carrol, you have probably read a chapter on afternoon tea under the title, “A Mad Tea-Party”. However, unlike the tea party in the novel, the standard afternoon tea is usually served without wine but a variety of teas as a replacement. She desired a tiny meal to appease her hunger - nothing substantial, just enough to sustain her till dinner in the evening. &nbsp;The upper class of English society ate a massive breakfast, a little lunch, and a late dinner in the 1880s. The Duchess requested that a tray of tea, cake, bread and butter be brought to her room in the late afternoon. She started inviting friends to join her after this became her habit. Based on the writer’s experience, a few places are worth sharing here for a satisfying afternoon tea experience. Eastern and Oriental (E&amp;O) Hotel is listed by Penanglious and FoodAdvisor websites as one of the best places for afternoon/high tea. The afternoon tea at E&amp;O Hotel is served at Palm Court between 3:00 p.m-5:00 p.m daily and reservation in advance is preferrable.

Priced at RM99 nett per person, customers will have a selection of sweet and savory pastries, sandwiches and cakes. Scones with cream, jam and butter are quite a signature of any afternoon tea and E&amp;O Hotel has these in their afternoon tea set. Usually, afternoon tea delicacies are served in a tiered tea stand with either two or three tiers, but this is not compulsory for serving. This tray-like serving tiered-stand is claimed to be the symbolic piece for afternoon tea (Wilson, 2020). When attending an afternoon tea, it is advisable that you check the dress code prescribed by the restaurant/café as some places are quite strict about this and entry will not be permitted if the dress code is not adhered to. As for E&amp;O Hotel, smart casual attire is required (Polo T-shirts are acceptable but guests are discouraged from wearing shorts, singlets, flip flops and sandals). E&amp;O Hotel is known for its great hospitality and quality culinary and thus, having an afternoon tea here is unlikely to be disappointing.&nbsp;

Dengan bertemakan ‘Klasik Tradisional’, Majlis Kemuncak Bulan Inovasi &amp; Kualiti UiTM Cawangan Pulau Pinang (UiTMCPP) 2022 telah diadakan pada 14 Disember 2022 bertempat di Dewan Besar UiTMCPP, Permatang Pauh. Pada tahun ini sebanyak lima pasukan terdiri daripada Perpustakaan Tun Abdul Razak, Pejabat Bendahari, Bahagian Pengurusan Fasiliti, Bahagian Infostruktur dan Pejabat Polis Bantuan telah bergabung tenaga untuk menganjurkan majlis yang gilang gemilang ini. Majlis turut diserikan dengan kehadiran&nbsp; Prof. Dr. Azizah Abdullah, Penolong Naib Canselor Institut Kualiti dan Pengembangan Ilmu (InQKA) sebagai tetamu kehormat. Majlis dimulakan dengan bacaan doa dan ucapan alu-aluan oleh Rektor UiTMCPP, Prof. Madya Ir. Dr. Haji Ahmad Rashidy Razali dan seterusnya dirasmikan oleh Yang Berbahagia Prof. Dr. Azizah Abdullah. Bersempena dengan majlis ini, pihak Akademi Pengajian Bahasa (APB) telah meraih tempat ke 4 bagi Anugerah Pencapaian Strategik 2021 Kategori Jabatan. Di samping itu, dua pensyarah dari APB iaitu Puan Maizatul Akmal Ahmad Mokhzan dan Puan Melati Desa telah mendapat Anugerah Perkhidmatan Cemerlang. Segmen Majlis Jasamu Dikenang turut diadakan bagi menghargai sumbangan pensyarah yang telah bersara pada tahun 2021 dan 2022 dan penerima dari APB ialah Encik Liaw Shun Chone, Encik Lim Soo Giap, dan juga Prof. Madya Dr. Rushita Ismail.&nbsp;

Suasana bertambah rancak apabila beberapa persembahan seperti silat, nyanyian dan tarian lagu klasik Melayu turut diselitkan ketika majlis berlangsung. Namun, yang paling menarik perhatian ialah apabila Timbalan Rektor PJIM &amp; A, Prof. Madya Ts. Dr. Kay Dora Abd Ghani telah menceriakan majlis dengan mendendangkan sebuah lagu bertajuk ‘Bintang di Langit’ nyanyian asal oleh Yuna. Majlis diakhiri dengan bacaan Ikrar Kualiti dan juga pengumuman penganjuran Majlis Kemuncak Bulan Inovasi dan Kualiti 2023 yang akan dianjurkan oleh pengurusan Kampus Bertam UiTMCPP. Diucapkan selamat maju jaya kepada penganjur seterusnya dan beribu tahniah kepada pemenang tahun ini! Pantun sangat erat dengan budaya Melayu yang sangat menekankan tentang adab, sopan-santun serta kerapian budi yang tidak tergesa-gesa. Di dalam budaya Melayu sejati, pernyataan sesuatu mestilah berlapik dan dinyatakan secara halus dan perlahan-lahan tanpa melulu serta menyakitkan hati si pendengar. &nbsp; &nbsp; Ini boleh dilihat di dalam penulisan serangkap pantun yang mempunyai&nbsp; dua komponen utama iaitu pembayang dan maksud.&nbsp; Pembayang adalah&nbsp; gambaran tentang betapa halus serta bersopan-santun budi pemantun sebelum beliau menyatakan secara jelas akan maksud sebenar percakapannya.&nbsp; Perhatikan juga bait pantun yang penuh&nbsp; istimewa dan sangat digemari ramai&nbsp; di bawah ini:

Melalui program ‘Bicara Pantun Merentas Zaman’ yang diadakan di UiTMCPP pada 20 Oktober 2022, penulis kini faham bahawa pantun berasal dari Palembang, Sumatera, Indonesia – tempat asalnya juga keluarga besar penulis yang dipercayai berhijrah ke Tanah Melayu lewat kurun ke 18.&nbsp; Pada tahun 2020, UNESCO mengiktiraf bahawa pantun adalah milik bersama dan hak mutlak Malaysia dan Indonesia yang berpaksikan bahasa Melayu. Secara ringkas, pantun pada mulanya adalah literasi lisan yang kemudiannya ditulis dalam aksara lama dan perlahan-lahan ditulis dalam jawi dan roman sesuai dengan perubahan dan peredaran zaman. &nbsp; Pantun dilestarikan melalui sistem pendidikan dan diajar sebagai komponen sastera di sekolah-sekolah di Malaysia. “Tiada kata secantik bahasa”&nbsp; - itu adalah sebaris lirik dalam sebuah lagu yang pernah didendangkan oleh Allahyarham P. Ramlee. Kata-kata atau bahasa yang cantik dan indah cuba diterapkan dalam jiwa pelajar-pelajar melalui pantun.&nbsp; Pantun adalah warisan budaya Melayu yang tinggi dan diharapkan tidak mati walaupun ada pengaruh luar seperti budaya popular yang giat mengasak budaya yang wujud sejak sekian lama ini. Pantun mengandungi bahasa aras tinggi dan mencerminkan keperibadian tinggi pemantun serta fikiran yang jernih selain nilai kemahiran estetika tertentu apabila mengucapkannya.&nbsp; Oleh itu, wajar sekali ianya dipelajari dan dibanggakan oleh semua rakyat Malaysia, terutama sekali kaum Melayu.&nbsp; Perhatikan bait pantun di bawah ini:

Pantun di atas jelas ingin mengatakan bahawa manusia akan pergi meninggalkan semua dan jasadnya akan hancur setelah sekian lama dikebumikan.&nbsp; Akan tetapi, manusia itu akan tetap dikenang orang jika ada budinya yang baik.&nbsp; Walau bagaimanapun, maksud itu hanya diungkapkan setelah diberi pembayang yang indah yang dicernakan hasil dari pemerhatian alam sekeliling seperti&nbsp; pulau dan gunung. Itulah sekilas bicara tentang pantun yang dapat dicoretkan berpandukan kefahaman penulis.&nbsp; Diakhiri penulisan ini dengan serangkap pantun nukilan sendiri:

Introduction “Let’s go back, I’m tired.” said an old fragile lady, who is a mother to my friend during their family outing one fine Sunday evening. At first, her family might have thought she was just exhausted or daydreaming but realization hit them when she started to be aggressive. She has just hit her husband's head ordering him to bring her back home. That was when they realized that something really peculiar must have happened affecting her brain which resulted in such behavior and action. Later, she was unfortunately diagnosed with dementia at just the age of early 60s. Dementia is a syndrome usually of a chronic or progressive nature that leads to deterioration in cognitive functions such as the ability to process thoughts. It affects the memory, thinking, orientation, comprehension, calculation, learning capacity, language and judgment. The impairment in cognitive function is commonly accompanied by changes in mood, emotional control, behavior and motivation. Dementia results from a variety of diseases and injuries which affect the brain, such as Alzheimer’s disease or stroke. It brings a big impact and burden on the physical, psychological, social and the economical aspect not only for the patients themselves but also for their caretaker, family and society at large. There is often a lack of awareness and understanding of dementia, resulting in stigmatization and barriers to diagnosis and care. Therefore, in conjunction with the Penang Dementia Awareness Day, the Clinical Research Center of Hospital Seberang Jaya collaborated with the Penang Dementia Association in organizing an event called Forget-Me-Not on 16th October 2022 at the Community Center, Lebuh Acheh.

Forget-Me-Not Activities The initiative was started by the Minister of Health, Yang Berbahagia Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar, when his father-in-law, the former Prime Minister Tun Abdulllah Ahmad Badawi was diagnosed with dementia. The Minister of Health had urged that this disease should be given attention among the public. All Malaysian health organizations are advised to carry out plans as an eye-opener to Malaysians in general and families of dementia sufferers in particular. With the theme of awareness and care for those suffering from the disease, Hospital Seberang Jaya and it`s clinical research center department had organized a charity project as an effort to slow the progression of dementia. A number of interesting activities&nbsp; were&nbsp; conducted during the event that included batik coloring contests, Chinese calligraphy, wrapping glutinous rice flour, flower arrangements and others. All the activities involved cognitive power and hand movement. Such activities are said to help patients slow down the progress of rapid forgetfulness or senility.&nbsp; Apart from the activities mentioned above, health screening services such as randomized blood sugar level, blood pressure, body mass index were also provided to the participants. One of the NGOs named Penang Dementia Association also offered knowledge to care for the elderly with disabilities and how to dress them with limited mobility and so on. The physiotherapy department from Hospital Seberang Jaya also offered exercises and mobility training for patients with restricted movement in a safe and effective way. In addition to the knowledge imparted by expert doctors and the experience shared by caretakers of dementia patients, visitors had also gained a variety of other basic knowledge on how to prepare themselves if any of their family members suffered from dementia.

Bright ideas border

For the past three years, MUET seminars have been conducted virtually to adhere to COVID-19 restrictions and this year, the seminar was finally conducted face-to-face. This time around, the Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Cawangan Pulau Pinang with the collaboration of the MUET Unit invited a speaker from the Sultan Ahmad Shah Pahang Islamic University (UniPSAS), Pahang. Madam Shafinas Sharifuddin is a MUET Master Trainer. She has conducted MUET seminars in schools and at various universities.

The 2-day seminar was held at the Dewan Seminar, UiTM Cawangan Pulau Pinang from 1 - 2 October 2022.&nbsp; A total of 160 MUET candidates from the Permatang Pauh Campus attended the session. Being an experienced MUET instructor, Madam Shafinas exposed the students to important skills and strategies to attempt the written paper (listening, reading and writing).&nbsp; Participants were excited to attend a live seminar where they could be involved more effectively. The speaking webinar was conducted online on 9 October to accommodate those sitting for the&nbsp;Session 3 Speaking test&nbsp;which commenced on 11 October 2022.

Chinese New Year is also known as Lunar New Year or the Spring Festival. The celebration begins on Chinese New Year’s Eve where all family members gather for a reunion dinner.&nbsp; Traditionally, the Chinese New Year lasts for 15 days, from the first day of the first lunar month to the fifteenth. People can visit relatives and friends or go to temples to pray for a safe and auspicious year.&nbsp; Parents or elders will give ‘ang pau’ to unmarried younger family members. Homes, streets and shopping malls are beautifully decorated. There are other activities that the Malaysian Chinese do to celebrate Chinese New Year, which could not be found in China or other overseas Chinese settlements. These activities include: 1. Malaysia style new year biscuit Malaysia is a multiracial country, and Chinese New Year biscuits are also influenced by other traditions. For example, ‘Kuih Kapit’,&nbsp; a crispy wafer pastry, is a must-have during the celebration. Initially, it was a traditional biscuit among the Malays and Nyonyas. Later, it was subtly integrated into the Chinese families and became an essential food during the Chinese New Year. 2. New Year Song Listening to new year songs is a unique culture of Malaysian Chinese celebrating the new year. Without them, the celebration lacks festivity and something is a miss. Almost all Chinese television and radio stations will air their annual Lunar New Year music albums. For Malaysian Chinese, buying a new year song album is necessary. 3. Mixing and Tossing Yee Sang Another new year custom is mixing and tossing raw fish salad (yee sang) with chopsticks.&nbsp; Before tossing the salad, the ingredients and sauces are poured into a large plate. The colourful ingredients suggest good luck. When mixing and tossing the salad, celebrants will gather around the table, standing and waving their chopsticks, and raising the raw fish salad. They will keep wishing good wishes loudly hoping to be bestowed with more good luck in the new year such as a promotion in their careers. 4. Blessing Tiangong on the Ninth Day of the Lunar New Year 	The ninth day of the Lunar New Year is for the Hokkiens to worship Tiangong and celebrate the new year. The worshipping ceremony begins early and is livelier and grander than New Year’s Eve. The Hokkiens brought the custom of ‘Bai tiangong’ to Malaysia.&nbsp; In the past, it was the Hokkiens who prayed to Tiangong on the ninth day of the Lunar New Year. However, today many Chinese of other ethnicities also participate in this Spring Festival custom. Every year on the eighth day of the lunar new year, all family members will return home for a gathering, cook various dishes and eat together at night. After dinner, they will wait until midnight to burn firecrackers and pray to God and gain blessing in their lives. Of course, Malaysia's Chinese New Year celebrations are not limited to these. Other activities include eating ‘Poon Choy’ and watching lion dance. An English language session with 15 Maahad Riyadhil Quran (MRIQ) students was carried out at Perpustakaan Tun Abdul Razak (PTAR), Universiti Teknologi MARA, Penang branch from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on 14 October 2022.&nbsp; The session was part of the Gamification of English, Mathematics &amp; Science (GEMS) 2022 programme, jointly organised by the Academy of Language Studies (ALS), Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences, Faculty of Applied Sciences, Pra Pengajian Tinggi (PPT), English Language Club, MySTEM and MRIQ. 	&nbsp;The staycation-themed session was blended with gamification and storytelling elements. Ms. Marni, Dr. Nur Husna, and Dr. Nur Ilianis from ALS led the dictionary skills slot with the assistance of eight UiTM Penang branch students.&nbsp; For the improvement of language skills, it is undeniable that students need to refer to the dictionary in order to develop their vocabulary to exhibit better performance in their higher education and career. It is pivotal for students to receive proper training in dictionary-use in the language classroom to attain linguistic proficiency in their professional academic settings. Therefore, a slot to teach dictionary skills was integrated into the programme.

The first activity conducted was reading out loud by Ms. Marni. This activity is very important as we want to help students to establish comprehension of the reading material as reading out loud is known as the foundation for literacy development. Ms Marni, with various tones and facial expressions, read a brief story about a staycation set in the United Kingdom. Throughout the story, Dr. Husna showed the images of words uttered by Ms Marni such as scenic sights, monuments, summer days and others - an approach known as the multisensory technique where students will see the picture while listening to it simultaneously. After the reading session, Dr. Ilianis explained the importance of using dictionaries when encountering difficult words. To further enhance their vocabulary skills, she continued by giving examples of words on the board and taught them to identify the words according to their sequence in the dictionary. The students were actively involved in giving responses. Within a short period of time, it was observed that most of the students were able to identify the sequence of those words while helping them to acquire a broader vocabulary. 	For the following slot, the MRIQ students were divided into four groups of varying ages.&nbsp; Each group made use of English dictionaries provided by PTAR. They were tasked with arranging five sets of jumbled words in alphabetical order on the library wall. The students enthusiastically flipped through the pages of the dictionary to look for answers.&nbsp; Each group was facilitated by one UiTM student. At the end of the activity, the fastest group to answer the questions accurately received a gift. All the groups were able to successfully complete the activity with just a minor error. 	Generally, the programme was successful as it had achieved the main aims: to familiarise students with English dictionaries, to raise students’ awareness of the information that can be located in the dictionary, and to encourage group collaboration. This activity also incorporated various other skills including reading out loud and pronunciation skills in the learning process. Other than receiving positive feedback from the school’s headmaster and students, we believe that such a programme helps to increase students’ interest in English language learning, thus, leading to positive academic outcomes in the long run.

It would be a blessing to have ample room in our backyard or the front compound for all our plants to be planted on the ground. They can grow on wide, rich garden beds. Well, though we can do this, planting in pots still adds artistic touch to the garden and our surroundings. The combination of both may work better in most home gardens. With the advent of technologies and ease of getting ourselves all the garden needs at just one click in the comfort of our home, we may still be puzzled on which the right ones are. In this issue, we will see some tips on choosing the right pot for our plant.&nbsp; Let us start with the basic and the most important aspect of choosing a pot. Pot with drainage holes is required to ensure you can grow a healthy plant. Now, we may wonder if&nbsp; one single drainage hole is enough for a pot. It is not a problem to get a pot with a single drainage hole in the middle or one with more drainage holes if the hole works well to drain excessive water from the pot.&nbsp; Secondly, it is important for us to ensure we buy the right pot size for our plant. The basic rule is that we must get a pot that is an inch to 4 inches wider than the diameter of the plant's root mass (as shown in the picture below).
