IW 4
(Cycles 9 - 11)
SYSTEMS OF LINEAR EQUATIONS IN TWO VARIABLES

Ever since Archimedes jumped out of the tub shouting, “Eureka!”, students in science have known how to use Archimedes’ fluid displacement principle relating the mass of an object to its volume. The relationship enabled  Archimedes to prove that his King’s “gold” crown was a forgery.

A suspicion that a “gold” crown contained some silver was verified by using a system of linear equations. The crown was found to weigh 45 ounces  with a volume of 5 cubic inches. Gold weighs 11 ounces per cubic inch while silver weighs 6 ounces per cubic inch. Is there silver mixed with the gold, and if so, how much? Representing the volume of gold per cubic inch as x and the volume of silver per cubic inch as y, the given situation was expressed as the system of equations, as follows:

The values of x and y were solved and it was found out that indeed the crown was not of pure gold.

In this session, we will learn about Systems of Linear Equations in Two Variables: how they are solved and how they are used in real-life situations. Study this topic first before doing the activity card. You may read pp. 264-274 of your text book last year or any other reference with this topic.

Option A
On a short bond paper, create an enticing and eye-catching advertisement illustrating one of the methods to solve systems of linear equations.

Your advertisement MUST include:
a) a catchy slogan;
b) a nice-looking logo that will represent your chosen method;
c) clear definitions of important terms (if applicable);
d) steps in using the method (illustrate this by solving an example of a system of linear equations in two variables); and
e) a logical argument, of at least 3 sentences, justifying the reasons why the method that you chose is better than the other methods.

Your output may be created digitally using Canva or other apps, or by hand (draw/ paint). Save your final output in PDF format with the following file name format: Grade, Section & Last name, First name_IW4 Option A (Example: 9A Dela Cruz, Juanita_IW4 Option A)

For BOOM students, a soft-copy (to be uploaded in the GClassroom) AND a printed/ physical copy of your output are required to be submitted to your teacher.
Choose between Option A and Option B
