Senior Phase Reflection
Whilst teaching in the senior phase, I was mainly exposed to grade nines. During this time, I faced many challenges, but I have also learnt a lot about myself as a teacher and what my strengths are. One of my biggest challenges that I have faced whilst teaching senior phase was classroom management and time management. The senior phase consists of bigger classrooms than what the FET phase consists of. Therefore, there are more learners within a classroom. I found it difficult to monitor each learner and making sure that each learner was up to date with notetaking and tasks. I also found it difficult to manage the classroom as the learners did not take the subject I was teaching as seriously as they did others. I constantly had to find a strategy to refocus the learners’ attention and focus.
However, during the course of four weeks of teaching within the four weeks, I have learnt a lot of skills regarding classroom management. I have also reflected on my teaching strategies and time management. During this time, I practiced the way in which I would handle content to improve my time management. Another thing that was quite challenging was to find a balance within building a relationship with the learners and being able to set boundaries. The maturity level of learners within this phase is relatively low and learners begun to think that I was a ‘friend’ or ‘peer’ which made it difficult when it was time to be firm and to discipline them.

With this said, I also found that I could communicate with the senior phase very easily. I could also form teacher-learner relationships easily. This way, learners were able to communicate with me and could express external issues that had an impact on their learning process. I also found that I have developed good ‘explaining’ skills as the way in which I explained content was easy for the learners to grasp. It was also easy to keep learners within the senior phase interested and excited about the content as learners from this age are still quite enthusiastic.
I also found that the teaching content within the senior phase much easier. I could incorporate exciting activities and learners were very engaged and excited about the lessons. I found that I had a bigger support structure from my mentor within this phase. My mentor helped me with my challenges and gave me various suggestions on how to improve the things that I was struggling with.
