He is famous for “discovering” North America although native Americans had already lived there for years. In 1492 Columbus sighted Cuba which he thought was mainland China and later on he landed in Hispaniola which Columbus thought was Japan. He then established a colony of 39 of his men.

His trip across the Atlantic Ocean influenced European colonization. Some tools that Christopher Columbus used during his travels were a compass, hourglass, astrolabe, and quadrant. He also used celestial navigation which is using the sun stars and moon to determine your position. 

Columbus returned to Spain with spices, gold, and “Indian” slaves. He was the first European explorer to travel to America since the Viking colonies. European  explorers have influenced trade and colonization.

Christopher Columbus was the cause of more goods, raw materials, and precious metals to enter Europe, and was the first person to discover the Bahamas. Everything that we know today is a result of explorers who have gone before us.                                                <br/>

Christopher Columbus was an Italian navigator and an explorer, who voyaged across the Atlantic Ocean. He made 4 voyages across the ocean and was sponsored by the Catholic monarchs. Europeans wanted to find sea routes to the far east, while Christopher Columbus wanted to find a different way to China, India, Japan, and the spice islands.
