Year 4 went for a walk in Oxleas Woods this term. We used our knowledge of maps and compasses to navigate through the woods...

What is the difference between a human feature and a physical feature of a map?

Start of topic:

Sofiyullahi - A human feature is where people live and a physical feature is not where people live. Ayo - A physical feature is not moving. Elidon - I predict that a human feature is a sea that you can swim and a physical feature is a sea you are not allowed to swim in.

Sofiyullahi - The difference between a human feature and a physical feature is that a human feature is man made, a physical feature is not man made. Ayo - A human feature is man made and a physical feature just appears like a forest. Elidon - A human feature is a thing that people make and a physical feature is a thing that is not made by people.

Year 4 had the opportunity to use compasses to explore an outdoor area.

We used the compasses to find north using the red pin.

By finding north we are able to identify the other directions.

Mary - A map that shows things. Elidon - It is an old map. Soma - A map that helps you find things.

Mary - Ordnance survey is the official map company of britain. Elidon - An Ordnance survey map is a map of your whole city. Soma - An OS map is a map that shows roads,grassland and ocean and see places in the world.

Pal: “I could feel gloopy mud under my feet, I began to feel cold. As I walked through the wood I stepped on a branch, snap! I started to feel worried and scared.”

Adara: “Colourful birds chirping in the sky. Skinny, sharp trees all over the forest. Dogs barking aggressively and people stepping in squelchy mud. I feel petrified!”

Marek: “I hear the shuddering sound of thunder in the distance of the gloomy forest. This makes me feel unsettled as I venture through the blackness of night.”

Soma: " I feel petrified, gloomy and low spirited because of the tall, lugubrious trees are so close to me, and the naughty crows are crowing loudly."

Alice: "I was in cool, calm forest, when I blink and saw everyone was gone. I started to slowly creep around the woods and can't see anything. I start to worry as I am all alone."
