Nightingale's Skipping Challenge

WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT?

At Nightingale, we know that a child's well being is not just academic but also emotional, mental and physical. For Maths Week, we wanted to focus upon the benefits of skipping for physical well being as this is so fundamental in the growth and happiness of all children.

We have all been learning how to record, present and interpret our super skipping in maths, using: tally charts, pictograms, bar charts, line graphs and pie charts.

To make sure we were counting correctly, we would only count once the person had jumped over the rope.

In Nursery, we practised skipping over a rope and jumping during Maths Week.

We used a table to record how many skips in a row we could do.

We also counted how many jumps we could do in one minute.

In Reception, we challenged ourselves to complete as many skips over the rope as we could in 1 minute.

We recorded our results on a tally chart.

Some of us were in charge of restarting the timer and telling their friends when to stop skipping.

YEAR 1

In Year 1, we completed our skipping challenge: how many jumps can you complete in 1 minute? Children worked in groups to jump and record each others score.

We did some class learning about what pictograms are and what we might use them for.

In Year 2, we had a brilliant week learning how to skip properly and challenging ourselves to improve.

We recorded our jumps using tally marks and then created a gigantic pictogram in class.

YEAR 2

Once we had all our scores in our tally charts, we used an online graph maker to create bar charts.

We were then able to answer questions such as 'Who jumped the most in 30 seconds?' and 'How many more skips did we do?'
