Children of the Peak Sanctuary

A project designed to help alleviate the suffering and neglect of the most vulnerable and marginalized children in an Ulaanbaatar neighborhood whose residents make a living and feed and clothe their families with items scavenged from the rubbish dump.

At the time this book was made, 120+ of the most disadvantaged children who live in this community of approximately 250 families are being fed, cared for and educated five days a week at the Sanctuary.

FIELD TRIP TO VISIT THE CHILDREN IF THE PEAK SANCTUARY

Why?

Grade 3 students at the International school of Ulaanbaatar had been finding out about the rights of the child through research and inquiry. It was time to see how their learning related to a local community and a project that helps relieve the extreme poverty of the families of that community.

How?

Much talk between teachers and in class revolved around the how this visit could be handled sensitively and respect the rights and needs of all the people involved.

What were our expectations as we got near the sanctuary?

Our first experience was to visit the area where adult members are trained in skills that will help them make a living.
