Ways Of Serving Food
The ways of serving food in Japan is different from the one in Hong Kong.In Hong Kong,we put larger plates of food in the middle of the table. We pick food from the shared dishes. However,in Japan, food is served in a set which consists of miso soup and three dishes. My host mom told me that we always eat from our own bowls and dishes. It is necessary for us to take turns to eat from each bowl or plate.
Seating
At my first dinner,my host mother and father put all the food out on the table but we couldn’t sit down until my host father sat in the middle and my host mother sat next.It is similar to what we usually do at my home.
Utensils
On my second night,we had noodles for dinner.I used my chopsticks probably. My host mom felt surprised that I could use my chopsticks correctly. She asked ''Why can you use the chopsticks correctly?'' I replied ''It is because we use chopsticks in Hong Kong.'' I felt motivated.
Eating Tips
I was eating noodles for lunch.I heard my host mom made some slurping sounds.I asked her, ''Why are you making sounds when you are eating noodles.'' She said ''In Japan,we make slurping sound to show that we are enjoying the meal.''
Final Thoughts
I felt excited because I followed and respected Japanese dining customs. And I learnt that different country have different customs. It is necessary for us to respect their customs.I think it is an unforgettable experience.
