Ingko Lam
Ingko is a local Hong Kong artist who loves to doodle. She came to visit us this school year and spend time with K01. She took time to answer some questions:
1. Why did you decide to be come an artist?
I loved visual art since I was a kid. Being an artist was always my dream although I knew would be hard. I had the chance learn intangible cultural heritage bamboo craftmanship from her Master Mr. Lui Ming. I fell in love with bamboo. Now, using it to make artworks and stories derived from bamboo culture and the nature material became my obsession.
2. When did you start working as an artisit?
After graduated from the department of Fine Arts of the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2014, I had a full-time job (not related to art). I work hard and left my job in 2019 to become an artist focusing on making artworks for exhibition!
3. What artist inspired you?
I think “Mother Nature”. Nature is the greatest artist on Earth and she always inspired me if we observe nature and feel thankful.
4. Who is your favorite artist?
Japanese bamboo artist Chiku'unsai.
5. What is your favorite part of working as an artist?
Focusing on one thing and doing many experiments. It always surprises me in the process of creating artwork.

6. What materials do you like to use the most for your works?
Bamboo! Firstly, it is one of the most environmentally friendly natural materials since it is the fastest-growing plant on earth. It can grow to full size in just 3-4 years. Other trees need 20-30 years to grow. More countries and people use this highly sustainable plant. In traditional Chinese culture, bamboo is a symbol of Oriental beauty. There are lots of poem and art related to bamboo witnessing the thousand-year-old connection between mankind and nature.
7. What is your advice for us?
Believe in yourself! Each of us has different strengths and weaknesses. Cherish yourself, then you can overcome different difficulties.
8. Do you have a second job?
I am also a tutor teaching intangible cultural heritage craftsmanship - bamboo steamer making. It is very meaningful to pass the traditions on as living expressions with hands-on experiences.
9. Anything else you would like to share?
Take time to learn about old craftsmanships. They are often sustainable, good for our environment. They also help us understand and preserve our culture. We can learn a lot from the experience of our elders.
