Artist Aarti

Aarti is a local Hong Kong artist who loves to doodle. She came to visit us this school year and spend time with Y04, Y05 and Y06. Aarti took time to answer some questions:

1. Why did you decide to become an artist?
I became a professional artist 4 years ago. However, I had always perused art as an interest and a hobby growing up and decided to turn my passion into my profession after I had my daughter.
2. When did you start working as an artist?
4 years ago. My first order was from a friend who wanted me to make an artwork for her new home.
3. What artist inspired you?
For me it’s not one artist but my love for patterns, free expression and documenting imagination inspired me to pursue art more seriously.
4. Who is your favorite artist?
Salvador Dalí is a surrealist artist and I enjoy his art.
5. What materials do you like to use the most for your works?
I like to keep it simple. A pencil, pen and a ruler are enough. Sometimes I also use mixed media like metallic leaf to give some more dimension to my work.

6. What is your advice for us?
Whatever you choose to do in life, always pursue an interest consistently. It will give you a balance in life, a purpose, tool for selfcare and an outlet for relaxation.
7. What is your favorite part of working as an artist?
I love that I can translate my creativity and imagination into something tangible.
8. Do you have a second job?
Yes. I have lots of other jobs apart from being an artist. I’m a parent, so I have to switch into many different roles and do many different jobs to care for my family and home.
9. Anything else you would like to share with our young readers?
Make time to do nothing and get bored. Be with yourself. You will gain two important things by doing this. 1. Your imagination and creativity will get stronger. 2. You will always find a friend in yourself.
