High Life Adventures! (Zip Lining)

On day 6 or 7 we are going to explore the “High Life Adventures” AKA zip lining! I’ve gone zip lining a few times, and I love it so much! The feeling of being on top of the world, with the air in my face is the best combo, not to mention the amazing view! Even though I can find zip lines scary and new at times, thats what adventures all about, and the reward is definitely worth being a little nervous!

This Titan 11 space ship connects to my definition of adventure because for one, launching a rocket on any level is taking a big risk and demonstrating their adventurous spirit. So in my books, just making the rocket in general, let alone launching it is adventurous. NASA used the Titan II rocket to carry out the Gemini program in the mid-1960s. All 10 of the Titan 11’s were changed by NASA so they could carry the two place Gemini capsule. The Gemini capsule ended up flying successfully which allowed NASA to experiment its durability on long distance missions. 

For our speedy science experiment we were given around 10 shore crabs, a cloth, timer and a hoola hoop taped to a table! We were testing which crabs were faster based on variables such as size and would put them in the hoola hoop which served as a cage, recording our answers and observations.🦀 

My groups hypothesized that the smaller male crab would be faster the the large male crab since they could be more agile and didn’t have big claws weighing it down. To conclude, our hypotheses ended up being correct and the experiment was a success! 

I’ve had so much fun on this field study so far! Because of this trip I’ve progressed on my adventure pledge as well as worries and solutions. For example, I’ve gotten to know and learn more about my classmates and eaten new foods like popcorn shrimp! I tackled my worries of having no one to take care of my pets by texting my dad on messenger which conveniently doesn’t require wifi. By today or tomorrow I’m going to challenge myself to eat one more type of food in order to complete my adventure pledge.

From these quests I learned that teamwork is the most important part! This last quest was great, we finished last, but it was still a fun experience. The important thing is we worked really well together, listened to everyone’s opinions and had a fun time.

While at Fort Stevans I learned that men the age of around 18-20 trained for a few years in preparation for possible invaders. Then one day a Japanese submarine came, and the well trained men wanted to fight back. However, suddenly their commander told them to hold, most men were disappointed as they had trained so hard. The reason was because they did not know how many submarines there were and didn’t want to give the location of the riffle.

To me, an adventure is an exciting or unusual experience that typically involves exploration, new activities, or taking risks. Most of the time adventure can be unknown, thrilling and challenging. People often seek adventures for the excitement, personal growth, and the opportunity to discover new places and cultures. For example, this trip to Oregon is definitely an adventure!

I chose this artifact because for one, ravens are one of my favourite animals, they are very intelligent and adventurous animals! Sadly ravens usually are misinterpreted as crows making them misunderstood. This artifact connected to me because of how they were admired by the Norse god Odin. The ravens were valued by Vikings, unlike now where many people see them as pests. These ravens connect to adventure because the Viking seafarers used them during their adventures, releasing them while out in sea to see if land was near. Therefore further showing how smart they are, with their great navigational skills.

My name is Brooklyn, and I’m a PLP learner! I love art, the ocean, my friends and adventure! Over the course of this field study I’ve learned so much about adventure and thats it’s okay to take risks, because in the end it’s always worth it. I think zip lines like these are important because they show how when you push yourself to do something nerve racking you can enjoy yourself! For example, when I pushed myself to go on a zip line and get wet!!! Most of the zip lines were around

This is a picture of the mouth of Columbia river. At the mouth of the river is an estuary, where saltwater meets freshwater. I really enjoy this photo because it’s a very beautiful beach, and a very nice day outside! 

On the explorer cruise I learned that Newport has the biggest dock in the state of Oregon and brings around 14,000,000 pounds of fish, making millions every year. Their biggest import is pink shrimp and the Dungeness crab.

For the team quest my group and I went through some challenges but I think overall it was a good learning experience! It’s helpful to know what we need to work on as a whole so we can improve next time! There are 3 more group quests we’re going to do and I’m excited to try and improve for the challenges that are going to come!

Throughout this field study, I have made significant progress on both my adventure pledge and my worries and solutions. At the start of the trip, I set goals such as learning more about my peers since I would be spending a lot of time with them. I believe I have accomplished this goal. I have gotten to know my peers better and am now closer to them than I have been all year. I also made significant progress on my adventure pledge by learning what a PLP field study is really like. I engaged in the activities with enthusiasm and pushed myself to try new things, which expanded my perspective and provided valuable experiences. Managing my initial anxiety was challenging, but by breaking tasks into smaller steps, I stayed calm and focused. This experience taught me the importance of collaboration and mutual support, strengthening my bonds with my peers. Overall, this trip to Oregon significantly impacted my worldview. By forming stronger bonds with my peers and gaining a deeper understanding of their perspectives, I learned to manage my anxiety and appreciate the importance of collaboration and mutual support. Moving forward, I plan to apply these lessons to new challenges and opportunities.

This lab is an example of being a citizen scientist because we went out to take ghost shrimp back to the lab, learning and collecting data about them and their surrounding ecosystem. It’s important to have citizens scientists such as my classmates and I because we all learn more about the ecosystem, which then allows us to share our knowledge to others.

I will have talked to some new people and learned a bit about them!

A month after this field study, I will have… Used the growth I obtained during the Origen trip in my everyday life, for example, being more comfortable when meeting new people and places.

Trying Food at Our Last Dinner/Lunch Together! Harvest Buffet

You wont believe it but I was tricked into a scandalous trickery! A donut was hiding in disguise under a fried role label.😞 this fried role was in fact a donut waiting to be eaten by an unsuspected innocent child, such as myself.😦

The spirit of St. Louis connects to my definition of adventure because it show how Charles Lindbergh, the first person to fly alone across the Atlantic Ocean, was determined and not afraid to fly alone despite the many people that said he couldn’t. Even if he wasn’t the first person to explore the Atlantic Ocean, he was the first person to fly over it alone. In my opinion, being able to explore an ocean that vast without any knowledge of what the future has to offer is pretty brave!

I’m at the Yaquina Head beach, and I’m not sure what I’m touching, maybe an eel of some sorts, or an aquatic worm!

My group needed to make a machine that could hover at the surface of a tub full of water, using a magnet to pick up silverware. We had many cut up pool noodles so our structure didn’t sink completely. In addition to this we had access tape, scissors, tubes and connecting pieces. At the start of the challenge it was a bit hard and everyone was a little confused. However, throughout the challenge we all worked together and contributed by giving suggestions, bringing tools and just being encouraging! If I did the challenge again I would make sure everyone was on the same page so we knew what the plan was going to be, and execute it faster!

I tried Bourbon street grill for the first time and it was really yummy!   

During this field study, I know I will be intensively with my PLP 8 learning team. I worry about this because I need a little bit of time everyday to myself so I can work to the best of my abilities. I plan to help myself with this worry during the field study by letting my teachers know when I need some alone time.

During this field study, I know I will be unable to care for my pets. I worry about this because my pets each have individual needs and can be hard to look after. I plan to help myself with this worry during the field study by making sure my parents know how to take care of them for a little while.🦎🐠🐟

During this field study, I know I will have no data or wifi. I worry about being disconnected because I wont be able to read my books that update weekly! (Tragic, I know😦) I plan to help myself with this worry during the field study by bringing a REAL paperback book with me!📖

Trying Something New to Eat at Kam Meng!

Eating this food connected to my sense of adventure because it’s was a new restaurant I had never been to and I wasn’t sure if I would like the food! (It was amazing, 10/10)

This ship connects to my definition of adventure because when you’re out boating you experience many new things and places in the world, discovering stuff you may have never heard of.

My favourite thing we did a Bullwinkles was goat-carting with my friends! 

Final Reflection Part 2 Photos &amp; Videos

Instead of going to Cannon beach we made an unplanned trip to see a humpback whale carcass that washed up on sea. Scientists had recently performed autopsy on the mammal to investigate what the cause of the death was since the whale was only a juvenile. It was an amazing once in a life time experience that was fascinating! 

For the second team quest we did amazing! Instead of rushing through it everyone read the instructions over and solved the problems as a group. Because of our team work we were the only group that completed the quest, finding the last clue under an anchor!

I chose this fish tank to show because for one, it’s beautifully aquascaped and it has some of my favourite fish in it! For example a rummy nose tetra!🐠 

On the Oregon trip im most excited to see the whales! I’ve only seen a whale once or twice in my life, which was from a distance, so I’m very exited to see one! We will be taking a boat trip on Thursday to see the marine discovery explorer cruise. On this cruise we will come across seals, possibly whales and other mammals, I can’t wait!

The Astoria Column features a beautiful hand painting spiral frieze, which displays three historical events. The first one is the discovery of the Colombian river. This was painted by Captain Robert Grey. The second is the end of the Lewis and Clark expedition, and the final one being the arrival of the ship Tonquin.

The Tillamook cheese factory was founded in Oregon mainly because of the weather and how close it was to the Columbia River. The mild, moist climate provided ideal conditions for dairy farming, while the river facilitated easy transportation of goods. This combination allowed Tillamook to thrive as a prime location for cheese production.

Today we went to a buffet and grill! It had an amazing view right by the water and I liked the seating. In addition to this the food was great and had lots of variety!  

The First Nations Section of the Columbian River

The colonist had a big impact on indigenous people. Because of colonist first people had a loss of identity, for example making certain boxes, fishing nets, mats, clothing and canoes. In addition to this they had their landed taken away, even though first people such as the Chinookan inhabited it for thousands of years. Today many traditions and skills of the indigenous people are being rekindled by their descendants. Compared to the Beothuk people (another indigenous group that is no longer here because of colonization,) Chinookan are doing well, still holding their traditions.

At first I believed I would enjoy to cross the bar. However, after going to the Maritime museum and reading about stories I’m not so sure. I don’t think it’s something I would find fun and I’m not sure I would be willing to take that risk. “The Oregon coast is not an area that should be too lightly recommended for leisurely cruising, and during certain months of the year there is probably no place on earth that should be more assiduously avoided.” -Les T. You shouldn’t take rocks home from Yaquina Head because their volcanic rocks, which were formed by a massive volcanic explosion years ago. Therefore if everyone continued to collect the rocks the beach wouldn’t exist anymore.
