A STORY FOR THE GOALS PROJECT 2021

Yao's uncle was a very kind man, named Toti. One day when they were with him, he listened/didn't listen to Sita's story/joke with empathy/judgement. He knew that his wife, Adjoua, also worried/laughed a lot about the situation. He wondered if they could find a solution/problem together....

But when they were 11 years old, suddenly Sita could/couldn't go to school anymore because her parents didn't have any money/desire to pay the secondary school fees. She was very sad because she loved/hated studying and wanted to keep on learning less and less/more and more. Her dream/nightmare was to become an Environmental Scientist.

Yao, on the other hand, was allowed/not allowed to go to a secondary school because his parents had/didn't have enough money to pay for his education. He was very happy but felt sorry/excited that Sita could not be with him.

Do you think it should cost money to go to school? Why? Why not?

Once upon a time, there were two very good friends, a boy called Yao and a girl called Sita, who lived in a small village in the Ivory Coast, Africa. They enjoyed going to the local primary school together/separately and were both very creative children, always full of fantastic/useless ideas!

Maimouna helped Adjoua complete a funding application form and present/send their project to the Department of Environmental and Community Services at the Town Hall. Everybody/Nobody really enjoyed/didn't enjoy the presentation and thought that teaching girls about the local environment and how to grow their own food was a great/terrible idea! So, Adjoua and Toti were awarded with/refused all the funds/paperwork they needed to expand/close their school...

How do you think they should invest the funds to help the project be most effective and reach more children?

Some years later, when Sita was 18, she left/went to the School of Environmental Education, Gender Equality and English and was unaccepted/accepted at University to study again with her best friend Yao. It was their dream/nightmare come true to study Environmental Science together!

Would you like to go to University? If so, why and what would you like to study? If not, why not? What would you prefer to do?

Toti had a&nbsp;great fear of/passion for nature and wildlife and always enjoyed sharing/keeping his knowledge with/from others. Adjoua loved gardening and growing/freezing food for their family and friends, she was an amazing cook and spoke fluent English!&nbsp;

Together, they saw an opportunity to help/harm Sita and decided to invite her and all the other girls who could/couldn't go to school, to come and learn/be in their home and garden.

One day, while Toti was teaching the students about how to keep the land infertile/fertile, Adjoua went to the Town Hall/Police Station to ask for help to make the school bigger and better.... They clearly needed more/less space, learning tools and resources and that meant that they needed/didn't need money!

They met a very special lady who worked at the Town Hall. Her name was Maimouna. She was one of the elders/youth of the village, a very wise/unwise old lady who knew many people and as a woman, especially understood women's/men's needs.

But if Sita hadn't told/hidden her story and made her voice heard/silent, what do you think would have happened?

Some of her friends also made their dreams come true...... they decided to start a business/game selling their fruits and vegetables in the local market place. Their food was very good/bad quality, everybody/nobody in the village had a very healthy diet and they earned/lost a good income/expense from all their hard work.&nbsp;

And in the future more/fewer children's dreams would come true/false... more girls would/wouldn't be able to go to secondary school because their parents would/wouldn't have money from keeping/selling their fruits and vegetables, to pay for the fees!&nbsp;

When Sita found out about this opportunity, she was very excited/upset. She spent all day everyday learning all about the local/overseas environment and how to grow her own healthy/unhealthy food, with Adjoua and Toti and all the other girls in the village who couldn't go to school. They had English classes too!

Which fruits, vegetables or other crops are grown in the Ivory Coast? Do you know which languages are spoken in the Ivory Coast?

Toti thought it was very fair/unfair that lots of boys went to school while most girls had to stay at home. He believed in gender inequality/equality. Although he had no children of his own, he wanted/didn't want all the girls and boys in his village to have the same/different opportunities.
