Tracing the killers of the famous Kraków musician

The Kraków community was shocked to learn of the death of a well-known musician, whose body was found at the car park next to his car. He was a very popular person, who, according to his friends, had no conflicts with anyone. At the same time, a young woman was attacked at this car park and taken to hospital with serious injuries. Police are investigating the case to determine who murdered the musician, what weapon was used, and whether his death was in any way connected to the attack on the woman.

Directions
The directions will lead you from the starting point of the trail to its end. You will get there even if you are unable to solve the mystery of the murder. If you get lost or are not able to solve the riddle but you would still like to try, all you need to do is to go back to the last unsolved question and try to figure it out once more.
The tips and clues are very precise; hence you should not get lost on the trail.

About the trail
The trail is situated in the Grzegórzki district. It begins by the bus/tram stop Teatr Słowackiego. Therefore, it is easy to get there from every part of Kraków, and even from beyond the city. The trail ends in Strzelecki Park in Lubicz Street, not far from the starting point. Riddles are situated in the urban space along main streets – on memorials, monuments and architectural objects.

· Remember that safety is more important than solving the puzzle. Cross the road only in the specially marked places, always exercising caution.
· Respect the privacy of people encountered on the trail and any property rights. Be respectful of memory plaques, monuments and other memorials you visit.
· Remember that children should not separate from the rest of the group.

Solving the mystery
Some of the riddles are designed to identify a person, so the solution will be a name, surname or initials of a person. Find this person on the suspect list (at the end of this booklet) and you will be able to eliminate them from the investigation.
Some other clues refer to the type of weapon, which can also be eliminated. As a result of solving all the riddles on the trail, only one suspect and one type of weapon will be left. These indicate the killer and the weapon used in the murder.
Following the trail in order to solve the mystery does not require entering private properties or purchasing entrance tickets to any places.

We start our walk in the Strzelecki Park in Lubicz Street. To get there, take a bus or a tram to the Słowacki Theatre stop. After crossing Jan Nowak Jeziorański Square, go down the stairs past the old PKP railway station building and turn left to Lubicz Street. After passing under the railway bridge and walking about 200m, you will reach Strzelecki Park.

START HERE

In Strzelecki Park there is a building called Celestat (i.e. the shooting range from German Zielstätte), which historically has been the headquarters of the Brotherhood of the Rooster (Bractwo Kurkowe). Celestat is managed by the Historical Museum of the City of Kraków. You can see permanent exhibitions there: Kraków Brotherhood of the Rooster and municipal defence, and during the Christmas period an exhibition of Kraków Nativity cribs.

Next to the Celestat building you will see a bust of a famous Brother of the Rooster who was a haberdasher by profession. Eliminate from the group of suspects the person with the same personalities.

ANSWER

In the past, Kraków was often attacked by enemies. During the siege it had to be defended not only by knights but also by ordinary citizens. In order to teach them how to shoot, the Kraków Rifle Society was founded, consisting of the best marksmen in the city.

CLUE 01

The shooters taught the citizens to shoot with a bow, crossbow, and later also with firearms. Every year, the best shooter was chosen through a competition, which depended on shooting at a wooden rooster statue. The shooter who managed to knock it down became the King of the Rooster for the whole year. This was connected with many privileges, such as exemption from taxes.

CLUE 02

Eliminate from the group of suspects the person with the same name as the King of the Rooster from 1964. His name can be found in the book commemorating the Rooster Kings who reigned from 1964 to 1999, which is located in the Strzelecki Park. Due to his great service to the Brotherhood, we may also admire his bust in the park.

In Strzelecki Park there are many monuments founded by the Brotherhood of the Rooster to honour famous Poles.

Find the monument of Ignacy Jan Paderewski and eliminate the weapon that is connected with the date of founding the monument.

Go back through Strzelecki Park to Lubicz Street. Turn left and head towards Mogilskie Roundabout. After walking 200 metres you will see the Oil and Gas Institute (Instytut Nafty i Gazu) on your right.
Cross the street in the permitted place to reach the pavement on your right.

DIRECTIONS

In Poland small amounts of oil are extracted (about 1 thousand tonnes a year) from 87 deposits in 3 regions of Poland: Lubuskie Province, the Baltic Sea and the Carpathian Mountains. However, the first oil well in the world was established in Poland.

CLUE 04

Eliminate from the group of suspects a person whose name is connected with the surname of a man, who had a great impact on the development of the Polish oil industry.

Moving along Lubicz Street, at number 27 you will encounter a memorial site for 40 Poles arrested for conspiracy activities and shot by German occupiers on 27 May 1944.

At 27 Lubicz Street there is also a memorial plaque dedicated to the patriots, soldiers of the Home Army (Polish Armia Krajowa). Eliminate the weapons that are from the same year as the memorial plaque.

Cross the street in a safe place. Head towards Mogilskie Roundabout. On your way, you will pass the Institute of Botany of the Polish Academy of Sciences dedicated to prof. Szafer, the Kraków Opera House and the former railway office building.

The office building being the work of socialist realism at Mogilskie Roundabout is often obscured from one side by large-format advertisements.
The building was erected between 1952 and 1954. It was designed by a famous Cracovian architect prof. Witold Cęckiewicz (he designed i.a. the Kijów cinema, the Cracovia hotel).

CLUE 06

Near the underpass, just behind the office building, you will find a plaque. Read the plaque and eliminate the suspect who has something to do with the information on the plaque.

Go through the underground crossing at Mogilskie Roundabout. Move along Bieliny-Prażmowskiego Street up to Brodowicza Street. Turn into Brodowicza Street and head towards the Divine Mercy church.

You are walking through the area called Osiedle Oficerskie. It’s a neighbourhood of villas which were built in the interwar period for the officers of the Polish Army on the land that previously held forts or army buildings. It’s one of the best urban solutions in Kraków, which is distinguished by wide streets and pavements, lots of greenery and lanes of trees on multiple streets. It was designed by some of the most excellent of Kraków’s architects.

Villas on Osiedle Oficerskie often have their names. Take a look at 7 Misiołka St. You will see an apartment building there that bears the same name as a suspect who is a non-criminal.

CLUE 07

The Divine Mercy Church is a postmodern object, built in the eastern corner of the triangle parcel set between Bandurskiego Street, Brodowicza Street and Moniuszki Street. The parcel was donated to the parish by the president of the Republic of Poland who became a refugee after the political system change in Poland. His memory plaque is located on the grounds of the church complex, adjoining Bandurskiego Street.

CLUE 08

We walk along Brodowicza Street for around 500m until the turn into Grochowska Street.

DIRECTIONS

Grochowska Street runs along the Białucha River (its name comes from the limestone milky colour of the water which is rich in limestone sediment), which is the Kraków section of the Prądnik River. The river flows out of Sułoszowa and runs in the Prądnik Valley through Ojcowski National Park.

In Grochowska Street there is the School of Sports Championship (Szkoła Mistrzostwa Sportowego). The school specializes in water sports: swimming and canoeing.
