The feel of the soft rug beneath me brings me back to the present. I can feel the rough book jacket on my fingers. The wind picks up and pushes a winter chill through the window. I stand and feel the sun against my skin which is unusual for December.
After I enjoy the sun a little longer I close the window. I lay on my stomach on the rug I got for Christmas yesterday. Before I start reading again I check the page number: 89. “Better to be the hunter than to be hunted. Even if you’re hunting yourself,” The page reads. Describing the fact that the main character insulted herself on the walls of the school bathroom.
I shift my position so I am laying on my back and hold the book up in the air as I continue to read. As I read I can’t help but stop reflect on the book. It was written so well that it transports you into the characters mind, my mind is flooded with anticipation to keep reading even as I’m reading. While I’m reading thoughts about the last few pages race through my mind, the girl is so confident about her body even though she is a little bigger.
It feels me with pride, admiration and a desire to show my confidence. Soon the chapter ends and I glance up at the page number to reveal number: 207. I almost gasp out loud as I realize how long I have been reading. Placing the book on the ground and standing at the same time I bolt down the stairs and whirl past my 3 siblings who are watching some cartoon.
“What did you guys have for lunch?” I ask as I check the clock on the oven When I open the fridge they still haven't answered mesmerized with the tv. “What did you guys have for lunch?” I ask again. “Huh” My sister replies still looking at the cartoon playing. “Never mind,” I respond. I close the fridge and grab some chips from the pantry as I pass.
