Women were not always treated equally, but because of strong women that challenged limits, the sky is the limit today!

March Madness for Women's History

Have you ever heard of what women went through in the 1800's and early 1900's? Well, it was absolutely dreadful in every way! People treated women like they were limited to emotions and things that they could accomplish in life. They weren't allowed to wear pants which back then meant they were "dressing like a man," or not acting like a woman. In the mid 1800's, the law c overture was introduced. The law allowed men to make their wives decisions, they could tell their wives to go clean, make them dinner, and pick their clothes. Women were fighting for their own rights, so they could make their own decisions and accomplish what they wanted to do in life.
They decided they had to make a change. They protested and marched until they had blisters on their feet just so that the world could be a better place. Until in 1920s, when the 19th amendment was made official, women finally got the rights they deserved. The 19th amendment promised women they could vote and live the life they have always wanted to live. Which definitely let women shine bright like they deserve.

Women's Suffrage

Women have suffered for many years like how they weren't able to vote at one point of time. In 1920 on August 18, congress passed the 19th amendment to allow women to vote.

Before the 19th amendment, women didn't have the right to vote, but women didn't just sit there and do nothing about it. They fought for their equal rights by protesting, picketing and even getting arrested. The is called The Women's Suffrage Movement.

Women did this because they wanted to have equal rights. Only men were allowed to vote, but women weren't, and that was unfair. Congress, which was made up of men, thought that it was fair and denied women the right to vote.

No one gave women the respect that they deserved for having to cook all the time, take care of babies all by themselves, and clean the house constantly.

Frida Kahlo

On July 6, 1907, Frida Kahlo was born as Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo y Cónalder, in Coyoacán, Mexico City, Mexico.
At a young age, Frida caught polio. That was not the end of her suffering.
On September 17, Frida was riding a bus from her school, when it collided with a racing trolley. She suffered serious injuries in the accident, including a broken spinal column, a broken collarbone, broken ribs, a broken pelvis, eleven fractures in her right leg, a crushed and dislocated right foot, and a dislocated shoulder.
While going through surgery, her mother gifted her a wooden easel and paints for her to use during the tough times. This moment in her life let her understand her love for painting. She often used art to express her emotions.
Frida was well known for her amazing use of surrealism in her art! Surrealism is where someone's' art represents their feelings or thoughts. Many surrealistic artworks look almost dreamlike, meaning that it may contain a mixture, or fusion, of objects and people.
In her late life, she married Diego Rivera. Her and Diego always came to a disagreement. Many historians believe that this caused Frida to become depressed, leading to the cause of her death. Her feminism and beautiful artwork helps celebrate her culture and women's strength.

Georgia O’ Keeffe (1887-1986) was an American painter, she was one of the first female painters to achieve world-wide status! She is one of the main founders of modern art in the 20th century. She is called the American Mother of Modernism. Her themes included flowers, bones, nature and architectural landscapes of New Mexico and New York City. She painted with water color and oil paint.
She is a very glorious women in history. Georgia O’ Keeffe is one of the famous female artists who opened opportunities to help woman follow in her footsteps. Her works of art are in some of the most famous art museums in the world! If you’ve ever seen Georgia O’ Keeffe’s art, there is a pretty pop of color, it is very bold and bright. Please be inspired by her work of art and other women's art.

Helen Keller was born on June 27th ,1880. A few months later when Helen Keller was only a few months old, her parents noticed that something was off. So they wanted to go check in with the doctor, which lead the doctor to identify that Helen had a febrile illness that lead her to be blind and deaf. Of course her parents were troubled when they heard this news, but Helen wasn't doing too good herself. That is, until her new teacher, and friend, came to her house to help her learn braille. Her new teacher's name was Anne Sullivan. Anne helped her learn tremendously fast. Which lead Helen to succeed very well as a young adult. She even went to college at Radcliffe College, and won a Presidential Medal Of Freedom, which showed that even if you can't see or hear you can still be successful. She is also known to be a activist for other people with disabilities.

There are moms of all shapes and sizes all over the world. It is important to share your appreciation of the person you call mom for all of the love she gives and sacrifices she makes to make sure you are a happy and healthy youngster. Moms usually don't go around announcing all of the selfless things they do for their families, but take some time to think about it and give your special lady an extra big hug.
It is important to honor this wonderful person, without her, you wouldn't be alive! "How do I honor my mom?" You may ask. Well, here are some cool ideas: Make a paper bag puppet of her, hug in a box, paper hug, write a card, draw her a picture, tell her stories, help her out with anything she asks, take care of her, love her, understand her point of view, and you can even come up with your own idea! Those are a few of the ways to honor your mother. Just remember, how important they are.

Amelia Earhart

Amelia Earhart was born in 1897 in Kansas. In 1923 she became the sixteenth woman to receive a pilot’s license. She flew 100 feet in the air and she knew she had to continue to fly. In 1932 she became the first female pilot to make a non-stop trans- Atlantic flight. Unfortunately during an attempt to fly around the world in 1937 Earhart’s plane disappeared. The Navy concluded that Earhart and her co-pilot had ran out of fuel, crashed into the Pacific and drowned. Others think Earhart flew over the Bermuda Triangle. She had a great impact on female aviation history. She said, "Woman must to try to do things men have tried." We celebrate Amelia Earhart to not only honor her life and career, but also Amelia's courage and strength.

Teacher of the Year

Marvelous, Magnificent, Mrs. Nguyen!

Intro
RBB is proud to congratulate Mrs. Priscilla Nguyen in being elected Teacher of the Year! Being a devoted teacher to RBB, she was nominated and elected Teacher of the Year. The third grade class was cheering and whooping, and showering their teacher with love, but only one question remained in the air after the joyous day: Why was Mrs. Nguyen elected Teacher of the Year?

Life as a Teacher
Mrs. Nguyen has won the hearts of her third grade crew, by making up fun STEM activities, after school curriculum, and interesting projects, crafts, and holidays. She is a teacher devoted to her class and her job. Fun fact! Mrs. Nguyen served not at just RBB, but also at Buena Vista. She is a kind and devoted teacher wherever she goes. She is a teacher who cares about giving the right education, by making up tricks to remember, and sometimes she even lets the class make something to remember the trick! She strives to make learning fun for her class, and makes sure that they are comfortable in her den. She puts the students into groups so they have someone to rely on for help. She is a sweet cupcake, sure to delight you, and that my friends is why she was elected.

Life at Home
Mrs. Nguyen is a teacher, but as we all know, she has a home and a family to return to after work. After a long day of teaching, Mrs. Nguyen goes back home. Her family includes, Philip Nguyen, her husband, and her three daughters, Sophia, Veila, and Keiko Nguyen. She has lots of pets, like the two dogs named Bear and Johnny, and two hamsters named Murphy and Kakashi, who recently moved back home, but resided in third grade for a while, and a turtle named Blastoise, who is currently at the third grade classroom. Mrs. Nguyen likes to meditate at home, to clear her head, and some favorite foods are bananas, avocados, and yummy refreshers from Starbucks.

Well readers, that's it for Mrs. Nguyen, the Teacher of the Year, the star of third grade, and a lovable person sure to delight you. If you want to learn more about her, or join one of her after school clubs, go to Room 6, where Mrs. Nguyen is eagerly waiting at her desk. Third grade thinks that they are the luckiest class at RBB to have Mrs. Nguyen, and they love her more than you can imagine. They've learned so much from their amazing teacher, and know they will always remember her when moving on to fourth grade.

Mrs. Olga and Marsela are RBB's two amazing lunch ladies! They both work all day, creating lunches for both RBB and Ruben Chavira!
In the mornings, they quickly arrive at RBB, serve everyone their breakfast, then get moving to a different school's cafeteria to begin preparing the lunches for both campuses!
Mrs. Olga confirms that she loves seeing the smiles on student's faces when they get served their food, and Mrs. Marsela enjoys keeping a nice and tidy area! They both have three children each, and love nothing more, than helping their loving friends and family. Mrs. Olga enjoys the color blue, while Mrs. Marsela enjoys the color black!

Mrs. Rosa is the custodian at RBB Elementary. She has been working at RBB for four years!
Mrs. Rosa dedicates herself to her job, and makes sure that every inch of the school is clean and safe for the students at RBB. Though she is a star cleaner, she states that her favorite part about her job, is seeing all the students of RBB! Seeing them learn, laugh, and play brings her great joy.

Her Inside Life
Mrs. Rosa has two children, Kristina and Alejandro. Her husband works a an aircraft painter. What a ton of work! She admits that her favorite colors are fuchsia and maroon. Mrs. Rosa loves to cook, but loves her family and friends even more!

We celebrate women like Mrs. Huggins in Women's History Month for working so hard. Mrs. Huggins is our wonderful principal here at RBB. She is very kind, caring, and warm-hearted. She is definitely willing to take her own time and set an example for the students of RBB.
Her Most Loved Hobby
One of her favorite hobbies includes cooking, she loves to cook random recipes she finds online.
Her Favorite Color and Why
She likes many different shades of blue like navy blue, and royal blue. She likes the color blue because it reflects a calm attitude in others. It also represents trustworthiness.
Her Job
She chose to be a principal at RBB elementary school because she loves to work with kids and in this job she doesn't just get to work with one class she gets to work with multiple classes.

We are going to talk about someone who is very special to RBB elementary, the one and only Alana Clark! She was born on April 8, 1999 in Conroe, Texas. Her love for exercising, kids, and games inspired her to be the amazing P.E. teacher that she is today. Coach Clark always finds fun ways to get us moving and grooving. Students at RBB enjoy participating in her planned activities while listening to the music that she plays. RBB thanks her for being such an awesome Coach.

The hobbies Coach Clark likes is cooking and spending time with her family. Coach Clark's favorite color is pink and she likes pink because she thinks it's a pretty color. Coach Clark's favorite food is sushi because she thinks its tasty. Maybe one day she will open a sushi shop.

Of course we need to mention our school nurse. The Nurse of RBB Elementary rocks, so I am talking about Mrs. Gomez! Mrs. Gomez has been nurse since the school opened four years ago. She was very determined to be a nurse, she just knew she could so she tried her best in school and didn't give up when it got tough! She said a very important phrase to herself when she felt like something was to hard, she said, "As long as I am helping others" and that's amazing, the fact that she did not give up. She tends to everyone's scrapes and bruises, and makes sure we go home and rest when we are sick. She also takes care of our hearts and has been known to be a sounding board to many students' troubles. We are immensely grateful to have Mrs. Gomez as our nurse at RBB Elementary! Thank you to everything you do Mrs. Gomez.

Special Visitors

Roberto "Bobby" Barrera and Britt Wells visit RBB to see how students are flourishing!

Intro
When Roberto Bobby Barrera and Britt Wells came to RBB to visit, the students and teachers were all excited and jittery to see them. Some classes were wearing their best outfits, and others wore camouflage in honor of Roberto Bobby Barrera. Everybody was talking excitedly, and finishing some last minute details waiting for the big moment to occur. Everybody gasped with surprise when they heard Mrs. Hudgins' voice ring through, "They've arrived!"

Britt Wells
One of the very special guests who came for an RBB visit was Britt Wills. She is Major General Wells' wife, and she came to RBB to learn more about our classes and community of Del Rio. She got to learn more about our staff and students, and all about the great things we are doing. She also got to learn how we are inspired by Mr. Barrera to overcome obstacles in our own lives. Britt Wells got to meet the teachers too, and she learned what class they taught, and how they were teaching the students. She learned an awful lot during her visit! We enjoyed her company and seeing the smile on her face.

Roberto Bobby Barrera
Another one of our very special visitors includes Mr. Barrera. He came to every class in RBB for a short period of time to talk a little bit about his life's challenges and his perseverance. The classes got to say how he inspires them everyday. It was astonishing to all the classes that he survived the bomb. The classes were intrigued by his life, and held onto every word he said.

Roberto Bobby Barrera and Britt Wells are amazing people. They were very inspiring to the RBB staff and students to do better in their lives and follow your heart's desires. Everyone at RBB learned something new with these special visitors at school. It was so much fun for everyone to meet the visitors!

Thomas Fox always strives to make his classroom a bit better, and now he can do even more as falcon of the week! Pre-K is happy to announce him as their falcon.

Riley Tretter is one of the amazing students who have reached the point of falcon of the week! She is a very kind student who is always lending a hand to someone who needs it.

Autumn Estrada is an amazing girl at school and everywhere she goes! Once she sets her sights on a goal, she won't give up until she reaches the top. RBB is proud to name her falcon.

Tyler Carrico is a student who is willing to help, learn, and especially be a falcon! He has super- school and kindness powers, and he is always ready to use them!

Jacob Abner blinds everyone with what a kind student he is! He never leaves anyone out of something fun, and makes sure everyone is happy. Second grade has to give it to him: falcon of the week is for Jacob!

With Ethan Wright falcon, what could go wrong in RBB? He is a great student, and is always willing to help out. Whenever someone feels left out, sad, or disappointed, he can help them out!

Charlotte Chen is the third grade falcon of the week is very kind, caring, and respectful. Her teacher Mrs. Nguyen had chose her for these reasons to be the falcon of the week. She absolutely loves guinea pigs with her heart and soul.

Andrew Chen was elected amazing falcon of the week, due to his amazing school skills, magnificent kindness, and no matter what obstacle gets in his way, he pushes right through! Congrats Andrew!

Tristan Williams has earned being falcon of fifth grade, and we all know why! He is a kind student, and will do whatever it takes to help out. The sun is always shining with him at RBB!!
