The bell rang, signaling the start of the school day. The students rushed into their classrooms, excited for the day ahead. "Today is the day!" Ethan exclaimed. "Our school is hosting a special program called 'Kids in Medicine."

"Kids in Medicine? What's that?" Lily asked, her interest piqued.

"It's a program that allows us to explore different careers in healthcare," Ethan explained. "There's going to be a career fair, a mentorship program, and even challenges to help us find out about careers in healthcare."

That morning, each class was called to the school's gymnasium. Overnight it had been transformed into a maze of booths, each one representing a different healthcare profession.

With curious minds, Lily and Ethan ventured forth, exploring each booth with a sense of wonder. But it soon became apparent that this fair was not just about gathering information. Each booth offered a challenge, a problem that needed to be solved to move on to the next career.

The friends eagerly dove into the task at hand. They listened intently, absorbing the knowledge shared by the professionals before them, and applying it to the challenges they were faced with. Each solution they found unlocked a new understanding, leading them deeper into the world of medicine.

The next stop on their field trip was an agricultural engineering workshop, where they met Mr. Ramirez, an agricultural engineer. Mr. Ramirez introduced the students to the world of machinery and equipment used in farming. The students marveled at the sight of tractors, harvesters, and irrigation systems. Mr. Ramirez explained how these machines were designed to increase efficiency and productivity in the agricultural sector. Unfortunately, while the students were in the shop, a tractor had broken in the process of cultivating the land. Mr. Ramirez had to get to work to examine and repair the tractor. The students realized that agricultural engineers played a vital role in making farming more sustainable and effective.

Their first stop was a cardiologist, a physician who diagnoses, treats, manages, and prevents conditions of the heart and cardiovascular system. She had an exciting interactive display. One of the items in the booth was a puzzle of the human heart. The problem: the heart model they saw in front of them was beating irregularly. What could be wrong? Help Lily, and Ethan determine how to tell whether a heartbeat is regular or irregular.

Create an electrocardiogram (ECG) using the Draw tool. Load up a sound wave of the human heart. Click on the voice reactor to hear the beat.

Cardiologists diagnose, treat, manage, and prevent diseases or conditions of the cardiovascular system. Education: Following high school it generally takes 10-17 years to become a cardiologist. These years of study include obtaining a bachelor's degree, attending medical school to earn a medical degree and completing a residency and fellowship in cardiology. Average pay: $436,849+/yr.

Nurses

Lily and Ethan moved on to the next booth. There they met a group of men and women who are nurses. The nurses described how they help to assess patient health, maintain medical records, and advise patients on disease prevention. They read the vitals-heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, temperature, oxygen saturation, weight, and height-and carry out the doctor's orders to ensure the patients understand their personal care.

The nurses then explained the variety and level of education with nursing. Nursing programs are available at an associate's degree, bachelor's degree, master's degree, or doctorate degree. At each level nurses build on skills learned and can do more with the patients. At this booth, the students saw an assortment of stethoscopes and heart rate monitors displayed on the counter.

"Before you can move on to the next booth, you have a required task: measure and record your vitals," one of the nurses cheerfully stated. "Don't worry, we will explain the process to you, but first, let's explore the heart."

Nurses assess patient health problems and needs, develop and implement nursing care plans, and maintain medical records. They could also administer nursing care to ill, injured, convalescent, or disabled patients. Additionally, they can advise patients on health maintenance and disease prevention or provide case management. Licensing or registration is required.
