What is MyEdTechBuddy?

@MyEdTechBuddy Student Edition is designed to support you in preparing for employment in today's digital world. We aim to support and enhance your prospects by focusing on the key skills required by employers according to recent surveys.

All units are divided into topics with short, targeted examples of how different approaches can be used to be efficient and professional in a work environment, be that in person or virtual.

Email: Professional Approaches

One of the most important things to be aware of is that your email says a lot about you as an individual. When applying for jobs, make sure you have a professional looking email address. Yes, it's time to ditch Robbielovesminecraft@email.com!

There are many email providers you can use but Gmail and Outlook are the most used in the workplace. It may benefit you to use a personal email that mimics a platform you might use in the workplace.

It's important to set the right tone with your emails, it's a vital form of communication between you, colleagues, bosses and clients. Find out the conventions in your company when you start.

In this unit we'll look at professional emails, conventions, inbox settings and enhancements to help you communication effectively and efficiently with those around you.

Email: Culture and Conventions

Understanding how the email culture in your company and beyond is an important part of the onboarding process. You should be given an induction where things like this are explained or at least resources provided for you to find out.

Some companies, working across the globe will have people working around the clock in different time zones - it's important to be aware of this.

Equally, some companies may encourage staff to only email during work hours.

There may also be certain conventions relating to copying in certain people or replying to group messages.

You want to get off on the right foot so make sure you take this into account.

When you make the move from education to employment you will notice a huge difference in email usage. It's not uncommon to receive hundreds of emails a day. Sometimes you can leave your workstation for 5 minutes and come back to a whole new set of emails.

Learning how to manage your inbox effectively will put you in a really good position to stay organised, informed and on schedule with work deadlines.

There are many ways to organise your emails and it's a personal choice. You need to find a way that works for you in your role. I've personally had several different approaches over the years as my roles have changed and required different types of organisation.

Although this example uses Gmail, similar functions are available in other mail clients.

Email: Enhance your emails

Making your email work for you will save you a lot of hassle and help to keep you on task. You can control your own work-life balance more easily with certain enhancement features that include using templates, snoozing emails, and using video or voice recordings to ensure your message is communicated clearly.

Remember, what you type may not always come across in the way intended so adding voice or video can help to convey your message. It may also allow for the use of accessibility features like closed captions (subtitles) on videos or translation.
