The Legend of Romolo and Remo

A long time ago there were two brothers named Amulio and Numitore
Tanto tempo fa c'erano due fratelli di nome Amulio e Numitore

Amulio and Numitore wanted to be kings of Albalonga. But only one of the two could be the king
Amulio e Numitore volevano essere re di Albalonga ma solo uno dei due poteva diventare re

Amulio chased away the brother and forced his daughter, Rea Silvia, to become a high priestess of the goddess Vesta so that she could not get married and have children
Amulio caccia via il fratello Numitore e obbliga sua nipote, Rea Silvia, a diventare una vestale così non avrebbe potuto sposarsi ed avere figli

But Rea Silvia fell in love with the God Mars
Ma Rea Silvia si innamora del Dio Marte

And she gave birth to a pair of twins
Nacquero due gemelli

When Amulio came to know of the twins’ birth, he ordered a guard to kill them
Quando Amulio seppe della nascita dei due gemelli ordinò ad una guardia di ucciderli

The guard took the children
La guardia prese i bambini

The guard did not have the heart to kill the little ones but, after laying them in a basket, he entrusted it to the river Tiber’s flow
La guardia non li uccise, ma li mise in una cesta e li portò sulla riva del fiume Tevere

A she-wolf heard the little twins crying, she took them, warmed them up and nursed them
Una lupa sentì piangere i gemellini, li prese, li scaldò e li allattò

Some day a shepherd, whose name was Faustolo, passed by and took the children
Un giorno passò di lì un pastore di nome Faustolo che prese con sé i due gemelli

Faustolo took the twins home to his wife
Faustolo portò i gemelli a casa dalla moglie

She brought them up as if they were theirs
Che li crebbe come fossero suoi figli

Grown up Romolo and Remo, these are the names given to the twins, went back to Albalonga
Diventati grandi, Romolo e Remo, tornarono ad Albalonga

They freed their mother, killed their great-uncle...
Liberarono la mamma, uccisero lo zio...

…and restored to the throne their grandfather Numitore as king of Albalonga
...e fecero diventare Numitore, loro nonno, re di Albalonga

The two brothers wanted to lay the foundation of a new city but they didn’t know where to build it. So they asked the gods for advice. The answer was “Whoever sees more birds flying in the sky will decide where to build the city”. Romolo won
I due fratelli desideravano costruire un’altra città ma non sapevano dove farla, così andarono dagli dei che dissero loro: “Chi vedrà più uccelli nel cielo deciderà dove fare Roma”. Vinse Romolo.

Romolo marked a rut, with a plough, which depicted the boundaries of the new city
Romolo tracciò un solco con un aratro che rappresentava il confine delle mura della nuova città

Remo crossed it and…
Remo lo oltrepassò e...

He was killed by his brother
Quindi Romolo lo uccise

Thus Romolo was crowned king and city was named Rome in his honor
Romolo divenne così il re e la città in suo onore si chiamò Roma.
