5E Instructional Model

Background

The 5E model was developed in 1987 by the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study based on the research and findings from the work of educators J. Myron Atkin and Robert Karplus from 1962. The 5E model promotes collaborative active learning in which students work together to solve problems and investigate new concepts by asking questions, observing, analyzing, and drawing conclusions.

Rationale

The reason we are encouraging the use of the 5E instructional model is two-fold. First, the 5E model is a research based model that positively affects student achievement and empowers students to be life long learners. Secondly, with all the uncertainty surrounding the state of education due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are trying to provide access for students through the use of technology integration to successfully continue their education.

Each participant will find his/her board already labeled with their name on it, in the Google Jamboard app. Each participant will share an example of how they plan to modify the engagement strategy for a lesson that you were asked to bring. Integration of a tech tool is highly encouraged, but not mandatory.

Each participant will find a Google Doc template assigned to them through Google Classroom. The template contains a T-chart. The purpose of the T-chart is to identify any engagement at the beginning of the lesson that you were asked to bring with you. Secondly, use the T-chart to indicate how you plan to modify the engagement at the start of this lesson. Integration of a tech tool is highly encouraged, but not mandatory.
