NOELLY FERREIRA

Dina is a student at the University of Georgia studying Ecology with a minor in Portuguese. She discovered her passion for learning languages while in high school and began studying Portuguese during her first semester at UGA after hearing about the Flagship Program at orientation. She also loves to learn about the functions of nature and has specific interests in tropical freshwater streams and infectious diseases.

Renata is an undergraduate student in Letters – English Language and its Literatures at the Federal University of São João del-Rei (UFSJ). Her interests areas are Applied linguitics and the field of women's studies in literature.

Noelly has a degree in Administration (UFSJ, 2017). In 2021, she started studying Letras – Língua Inglesa e suas Literaturas (UFSJ). She worked, for a few years, as a monitor in an English Course. Nowadays she works in Public Service. She is interested in being a teacher, giving lessons at the university.

Rachel is an undergraduate student at the University of Georgia majoring in International Affairs and Latin American and Caribbean Studies with a minor in Portuguese. Her research interests include electoral systems and democracy, public opinion, and citizen relationships to the state. She is also part of the Flagship Program at UGA and is passionate about language learning. In the future she hopes to work for the federal government in the development sector with a focus on education.

Estudante da Universidade da Geórgia, graduanda em Ecologia com especialização em Português. Descobriu a paixão pela aprendizagem de línguas no ensino médio e começou a estudar portugues durante o seu primeiro semestre na UGA depois de ouvir sobre o Programa de Flagship na orientação. Ela gosta muito de aprender sobre as funções do meio ambiente também e tem interesses específicos em córregos tropicais de água doce e doenças infecciosas.&nbsp;

Graduada em Administração pela Universidade Federal de São João del-Rei (UFSJ, 2017). No ano de 2021 iniciou seus estudos no curso de Letras – Língua Inglesa e suas Literaturas (UFSJ). Trabalhou, por alguns anos, como monitora em um curso de inglês. Atualmente é Servidora Pública Municipal. Possui interesse pela carreira acadêmica e almeja trabalhar como professora universitária no futuro.

Conjunto de moradias populares que, construídas a partir da utilização de materiais diversos, se localizam, normalmente, nas encostas dos morros da comunidade.

“With mom's blessing, with grandma's blessing, let's beat the worst." That is one of the lines of the theme song of the campaign “Favela's Mothers'' by CUFA (Sole Center of Favelas), an institution that has struggled for twenty years to develop integration tools and social inclusion in favelas throughout Brazil.

“A bença Mãe, A bença Vó,vamos vencer o pior” é um dos versos da canção tema da campanha “Mães da Favela “ da CUFA (Central Única das Favelas),instituição que a há vinte anos vem lutando e desenvolvendo ferramentas de integração e inclusão social nas favelas de todo o Brasil.

CUFA has developed projects covering diverse social spheres: education, leisure, sports, culture, and citizenship. Projects include Favela’s Championship, Favela’s day, Hutúz, LIIBRA, CineCufa, Maria-Maria, Favela’s Mothers, and the Anu Award. According to the institution the Anu award: “is an award that aims to identify and publicly recognize initiatives by institutions, foundations, non-governmental organizations, companies, individuals, governments, universities, neighborhood associations or similar entities, that aim for Brazilian social and cultural equality.” The great majority of CUFA's team is composed of young adults trained in management and professionalization workshops at the institution's main headquarters.

A Cufa tem desenvolvido projetos que contemplam as mais diversas esferas sociais: educação, lazer, esportes, cultura e cidadania. Projetos como Taça Das Favelas, Dia Da Favela, Hutúz, LIIBRA, CineCufa, Maria-Maria, Mães da Favela e o Prêmio Anu que, segundo a definição da própria instituição, “é um prêmio que tem o intuito de identificar e reconhecer publicamente iniciativas de instituições, fundações, organizações não governamentais, empresas, indivíduos, governos, universidades, associações de moradores e afins, que sejam voltadas para a busca do equilíbrio social e cultural brasileiro”. A equipe da CUFA é composta, em sua grande maioria, por jovens formados nas oficinas de capacitação e profissionalização das bases da instituição.

Renata, who has had vitiligo since the age of 3, learned over time that showing society that each individual has their own personal battles is important for the acceptance of others and helps us to see each other equally. “I always used my vitiligo to help in any way. This has made me stronger, and made me want to know myself and realize that a physical difference does not define me; from then on my life has been composed of various moments of volunteering, and I have always wanted to follow this social journey"

Renata, que tem vitiligo desde os 3 anos de idade, aprendeu ao longo dos anos que mostrar para a sociedade que cada indivíduo tem uma guerra pessoal é importante para que o outro aceite a sua ajuda e te veja como igual. “Eu sempre usei do meu vitiligo para ajuda de qualquer natureza. Isso me fez mais forte, isso me fez querer me autoconhecer e definir que, realmente, de fato, uma diferença física não me define e aí a minha vida foi composta de vários momentos de ajuda e eu quis muito, sempre seguir esse lado social”.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Society of St. Vincent of Paul

In 2005, at just 11 years old, Renata Castro, now 27, started to get involved with social projects. As a child, Renata realized how important the work carried out by the Society of St. Vincent of Paul (Brazil) was for her community and decided to become a part of their team; now, she is president of the Santa Luiza Conference, one of the entities that makes the entire project of St. Vincent de Paul possible.

Em 2005, aos 11 anos de idade, Renata Cristina Castro, hoje com 27 anos, começou a atuar em projetos sociais. Ainda criança, Renata percebeu os trabalhos realizados pela Sociedade de São Vicente de Paulo (Brasil) como sendo fundamentais para a comunidade e resolveu fazer parte dessa equipe, sendo, atualmente, presidente da Conferência Santa Luzia, uma das unidades que faz todo o projeto da Sociedade de São Vicente de Paulo vivo. &nbsp;

He tells us a little about the project and the ideal of sustainable human occupation, the creation of others community agroecological and agroforestry gardens, like that one, and how the PermaLafa works connecting small farmers and local businesses. We also spoke with Maria Aparecida, one of the residents and community leaders, who tells a little of the her story in the video.

Ele conta um pouco do projeto e do ideal de ocupação humana sustentável, da criação de hortas agroecológicas e agroflorestais comunitárias, como aquela, e de como o coletivo trabalha de forma a ser uma ponte entre o pequeno agricultor e o comércio local. Conversamos também com Maria Aparecida, uma das moradoras e lideranças, que conta um pouco da sua história no vídeo.&nbsp;

Grande extensão de terra; área extensa de terra

PermaLafa, Conselheiro Lafaiete-Minas Gerais (Brazil)'s permaculture movement, aims sustainable human occupation. Rogério, one of the creators of the movement, took us to one of the places where PermaLafa operates, the Triângulo Dois neighborhood. As we cross the train line to get to the neighborhood just behind, he tells us that there is a disputed territory and that the residents have been occupied for over thirty years. He takes us to the community garden, cultivated with the help of PermaLafa and with the sustainability principles of permaculture which, as he explains, aims a production that respects natural cycles and maximizes sustainable use of local resources.

O coletivo de permacultura de Conselheiro Lafaiete-Mg (Brasil), o PermaLafa, trabalha com o ideal de ocupação humana sustentável. Rogério, um dos idealizadores do coletivo, nos levou para conhecermos um dos locais onde o coletivo atua, o bairro Triângulo Dois. Enquanto atravessamos a linha de trem para chegarmos até o bairro que fica logo atrás, ele nos conta que lá é um território em disputa e a ocupação pelos moradores existe há mais de trinta anos.&nbsp;Ele nos leva até a horta comunitária, cultivada com a ajuda do coletivo e com os princípios de sustentabilidade da permacultura que, como ele explica, visa uma produção que respeite os ciclos naturais e potencialize o uso dos recursos locais de forma sustentável.

According to Paulo Freire, all education is political, and it ought to be used to promote the progress and reconstruction of society, to improve the conditions of life, and to develop more just and equal systems. Paulo Freire’s wise words were our guiding framework as we created this book, and we hope that his philosophy will be reflected in its content. We want to promote education that aims to be liberating, in order to participate in the dialogue between widely-held wisdom and on-the-ground reality.&nbsp;We chose to present this information through the form of this guide, entitled “Alphabet of Social Justice".

Segundo Paulo Freire, toda educação é política e deve se usar para promover o progresso e reconstrução da sociedade, para melhorar as condições da vida e para desenvolver sistemas mais iguais e mais justos. As sábias palavras de Paulo Freire foram a filosofia que nos guiava quando criamos este texto, e esperemos que ela se reflita pelo conteúdo deste livro. Queremos promover uma educação que busca ser libertadora, num constante diálogo com a sabedoria e com a realidade específica de diferentes comunidades locais. Paulo Freire was a famous Brazilian pedagogist who emphasized the role of education in liberation movements. He believed that learning functions best when it actively incorporates the everyday challenges experienced by students.

Paulo Freire foi um pedagogo famoso brasileiro que enfatizava o papel da educação nos projetos de liberação. Ele pensava que a aprendizagem funciona melhor quando ela está incorporando ativamente com os desafios cotidianos experienciados pelos estudantes.

Alexa studies international affairs and Romance languages at the University of Georgia (US). In the future, she would like to work in the field of human rights. She is passionate about criminal justice reform, affordable housing, and immigration rights.&nbsp;

Social Justice is a concept of equality and fraternity between human being Throughout history, there have been many social justice movements that have attempted to change the systems of daily life to create more equality in terms of opportunities, treatment, and access to resources. Among these movements are the black liberation movement, feminism, environmentalism, and many more.

A Justiça Social é&nbsp;um conceito de igualdade e fraternidade entre seres humanos. Ao longo da história, existem muitos movimentos de Justiça Social que têm tentado mudar os sistemas de vida cotidiana para criar mais igualdade em termos de oportunidades, de tratamento e de acesso aos recursos. Entre eles, estão o movimento de libertação negra, o feminismo, o ambientalismo e muitos mais.

As young adults that have witnessed some of the most pre-eminent protest movements of the last 100 years, and as both young Brazilians and Americans, we all have an innate interest in Social Justice movements and their proposals for the advancement of our world. Beyond this, as language students in an increasingly globalized world, we wanted to share some of the current, local movements that act through grassroots efforts in our respective countries and draw attention to the connections between them.

Como jovens que testemunharam alguns dos movimentos de protesto mais proeminentes dos últimos cem anos, tanto no Brasil como nos Estados Unidos, temos todos um interesse nato nos movimentos de Justiça Social e suas propostas de melhorias ao mundo. Além disso, como estudantes de línguas em um mundo cada vez mais globalizado, queríamos compartilhar com alguns movimentos locais e atuais, que funcionam como organizações de base em nossos respectivos países, e entender as conexões entre eles.

     Without Social Justice, the benefits of development are not felt by all members of society. Every day the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer, and, for one of the first times in history, the younger generations may have a lower standard of living than those before them. Having a well-defined understanding of social justice as a societal goal is necessary for humanity’s progress.

     Sem a presença da Justiça Social, as vantagens do desenvolvimento não são experienciadas por todos os segmentos da sociedade. Os ricos se tornam cada dia mais ricos, os pobres mais pobres, e para uma das primeiras vezes na história, as novas gerações podem ter um padrão de vida pior do que os anteriores. Ter uma ideia bem definida de justiça social como um objetivo para a sociedade é necessário para a evolução da humanidade.

In this book, we will highlight many movements and groups that share and exemplify these goals, and we aim to tell the stories of these organizations, associating each of them with their chosen term and incorporating content made by the authors themselves to better illustrate the real changes they are making in the world.

Neste livro, vamos destacar muitos movimentos e grupos que compartilham e exemplificam esse objetivos, e vamos contar as histórias dessas organizações, associando cada um com um termo, e incorporando conteúdo produzido pelos autores para melhor ilustrar as mudanças reais eles estão fazendo no mundo.

Instituto Curupira is a non-profit organization, with one of its headquarters in the city of Barbacena. The project gained prominence in the city in 2012, and it promotes work that connects art, science, education and sustainability. One of the reasons that led to its creation was the need to think about an alternative school. The organization provides access to cultural, artistic, and sustainable education to the children in need in society, through workshops and courses in music and art. Maria Eduarda, one of the co-operators in the project, says that what most drives her to be part of the project is the fact that she is a former student of the Institute and that she can now have greater contact teaching English through music. Instituto Curupira is maintained through the support of regional companies and through courses that are offered for a certain cost.

O Instituto Curupira é uma organização sem fins lucrativos, com uma de suas sedes na cidade de Barbacena. O projeto ganhou destaque na cidade no ano de 2012, promovendo um trabalho conectando arte, ciência, educação e sustentabilidade. Um dos motivos que levaram a sua criação foi a necessidade de se pensar em uma escola alternativa. A organização permite o acesso a educação cultural, artística e sustentável às crianças mais carentes da sociedade, por meio de oficinas e cursos de música e arte. Maria Eduarda, uma das cooperadoras no projeto, afirma que o que mais a impulsiona em fazer parte do mesmo, é o fato de ser uma antiga aluna do Instituto e, agora poder ter um maior contato lecionando língua inglesa através da música. O Instituto Curupira se mantém por meio de apoio de empresas regionais e de alguns cursos que também são oferecidos, com um certo custo.

During the second semester of 2021, a new idea came up, and the creators of the Brechó, in a partnership with two psychologists, created the project “One day at a time”, dedicated to mental health. The main objective is to support and provide quick and free assistance that is accessible to an entire community that often suffers from the consequences of depression, anxiety, panic attacks, etc., and faces a series of difficulties so that they can receive the help they need.

No segundo semestre de 2021, uma nova ideia surgiu e as criadoras do Brechó, em parceria com duas psicólogas, criaram o projeto “Um dia de cada vez”, voltado para a saúde mental. O principal objetivo é apoiar e prestar um atendimento rápido e gratuito, acessível para toda a comunidade que, muitas vezes, sofre com as consequências causadas por problemas como depressão, ansiedade, síndrome do pânico e etc., e encontra uma série de dificuldades ao tentar buscar ajuda.

In 2020, Ana Beatriz Pereira and Vanessa Alves created the Soho Brechó (a thrift store clothing business), impacted by the fact that the textile industry is one of the most polluting in the world. During the years of its operation, the Brechó has supported two social initiatives, both developed in the city of Barroso-Minas Gerais (Brazil): “Closets don’t feel cold” (2020) and “The absence of pads in the Cesta Básica” (2021).

No ano de 2020, a Ana Beatriz Pereira e a Vanessa Alves criaram o Soho Brechó, partindo do fato de que a indústria têxtil é uma das mais poluentes do mundo. Durante os anos de atuação, o Brechó apoiou dois projetos sociais que foram desenvolvidos na cidade de Barroso-Minas Gerais (Brasil): “Guarda roupa não sente frio” (2020) e “Falta absorvente na cesta básica” (2021).

As a final note, the first edition of this book was written and developed by the students of the Portuguese Flagship Program–from the Universities of Georgia and Texas at Austin–in partnership with the students of Letters from the Federal University of São João del-Rei. The book is organized in alphabetical order. Each text presents the story of a person, Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) or social movement that makes a difference in society. The titles of the texts were given by the authors as a way of expressing what each story represents. Each title is followed by a definition of the word or phrase used.

Do you think the justice system is always fair? If you think so, the Innocence Project proves otherwise. The project started in the US 25 years ago. Attorney Dora Cavalcanti observed the project in the United States for a long period before she managed to bring it to Brazil. It was in 2016 that the project came to life in Brazil, thanks to Dora's partnership with the lawyers Rafael Tuchermann and Flávia Rahal. In general, the project aims to achieve social justice, increasing discussions about miscarriages of justice and normalizing compensation for incarcerated innocents. 

Você acha que o sistema judicial está sempre certo? Se você acha que sim, o Innocence Project prova o contrário. O projeto começou nos EUA há 25 anos. A advogada Dora Cavalcantti observou o projeto nos Estados Unidos por um longo período antes de conseguir trazê-lo para o Brasil. Foi no ano de 2016 que o projeto tomou vida no Brasil, graças à parceria de Dora com os advogados Rafael Tuchermann e Flávia Rahal. Dione is a Romance Languages undergrad student at the University of Georgia studying Portuguese and Spanish. Her interests include the Black diaspora in Portuguese and Spanish speaking countries, liberation movements, and the connections that exist between Black communities around the world. At the end of her academic career, she would like to spread her love of languages and the Black community through education. Dione intends to return to her former high school, where her love for language took root, in order to provide students like herself with the same experiences and opportunities that were afforded to her.

Tom is an international affairs, history, and Portuguese student at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. He plans to work for the federal government in national security following graduation, where he hopes to use his Portuguese knowledge to increase bilateral relations between the United States and Brazil. At the moment Tom is working with the British Standards Institute to analyze supply chain congestion in Brazil, and in the past has been a server at restaurants across Athens. In his free time he likes to read biographies and history books, keep up with popular TV shows with his roommates, and spend time with his family.

Matheus is an undergraduate student in Letters – English Language and its Literatures at the Federal University of São João del-Rei (UFSJ). He wants to work on teaching the English language to different ages and has an interest in games for educational purposes.

Fellipe has a degree in Geography at Universidade Presidente Antônio Carlos and currently is an undergraduate student of English Teaching at Universidade Federal de São João del-Rei. He has worked as an English teacher at language courses and middle school. He works as a bilingual education consultant.

Estudante de línguas românicas (português e espanhol) na Universidade da Georgia. Os interesses dela incluem a diáspora negra nos países lusófonos e hispânicos, os movimentos de liberdade e a conexão que existe entre as várias comunidades negras no mundo.

Athens Community Fridge, which was created in 2020, is an organization made by the people of Athens, Georgia(USA), for the people of Athens. They provide fresh produce, as well as canned goods for those in need, free of charge.

The United States and Brazil share a mutual crisis: a hunger crisis. This problem not only affects the homeless community, but millions of others as well. In fact, more than half of Brazil experienced food insecurity as a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic. What is food insecurity? Nutritionist Caroline Dalabona defines it as anyone who lacks sufficient quantity and quality of food for their life. In comparison, around 38 million people in the United States face food insecurity, which is roughly 12% of its population.

Located in São Sebastião, one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth, Verdescola was founded by Maria Antonia Civita in 2008. Due to her involvement in the environmental sector and her understanding that environmental degradation is interconnected with the lack of opportunities available in the region, Maria Antonia decided to take action. Verdescola is a non-governmental organization that promotes social and environmental awareness, cultural inclusion, professional development, and citizen involvement in the community. The school ensures that children receive a proper education and offers a variety of classes where students can be creative and increase their self-esteem. In addition, it offers work opportunities and professional development courses for youth and adults in the community.

Localizado em São Sebastião, uma das regiões de maior biodiversidade do planeta, o Instituto Verdescola foi fundado por Maria Antônia Civita em 2008. Graças ao seu envolvimento com o setor ambiental e à sua visão de que a degradação ambiental estava intimamente conectada com a falta de oportunidades na região, Maria Antônia decidiu agir. The staff of Assodibar also try to teach their community what to do to maintain a healthy lifestyle. In 2008 the institution accepted a new role, and today works towards the development of new health professionals through mentoring resident physicians and medical students.

Somado a esse trabalho, os voluntários da Assodibar buscam orientar a comunidade acerca das ações necessárias para a manutenção de um estilo de vida saudável. Há 13 anos, a associação adicionou ao seu trabalho de assistência médica a responsabilidade de ajudar com a formação de novos profissionais, assistindo médicos residentes da Fhemig e alunos da Faculdade de Medicina de Barbacena.

In 2020, the United States and Brazilian health departments estimated that 10% of Americans and 7.4% of Brazilians had diabetes. In an effort to combat this concern, endocrinologist Liliana Chevtchouck worked with her patient Osmar Antônio de Barros to found the Association of People with Diabetes of Barbacena on February 17th, 1990, in Barbacena, Minas Gerais. In Portuguese, the organization is simply known as Assodibar. While the institution can’t offer universal treatment to the millions of Brazilians that suffer from diabetes, they're able to take care of more than 800 people, all of whom receive medical treatment, psychological, neurological, nutritional, social, and physiotherapeutic assistance. Of course, their patients also receive oral hypoglycemic medication and insulin.

Em 2020, os departamentos de saúde dos Estados Unidos e do Brasil, respectivamente, estimaram que 10% dos americanos e 7,4% dos brasileiros tinham diabetes. Pensando nessa população, a médica endocrinologista Dra. Liliana Chevtchouck e o paciente Osmar Antônio de Barros (in memoriam) fundaram em 17 de fevereiro de 1990 a Associação dos Diabéticos de Barbacena. Infelizmente, a Assodibar não consegue universalizar suas ações e ajudar os milhões de brasileiros que sofrem com diabetes, mas cuida diretamente&nbsp;de mais de 800 associados, que podem contar com assistência médica, auxílios psicológico, nutricional, neurológico, social e fisioterapêutico, além de receberem hipoglicemiantes orais e insulinas.

Gioconda Thomaz Pascoal was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2001 and, unlike many, she was fortunate to have a strong support system and the financial ability to pay for her treatments. While undergoing chemotherapy, she realized that many cancer patients were in need of a supportive community and financial help. Grateful for having overcome breast cancer and for having a community throughout her journey, Gioconda felt called to bring optimism to cancer patients who were not as fortunate as she was. She started meeting with other breast cancer survivors and they began sharing their testimonies with breast cancer patients to give them hope and support. 

Gioconda Thomaz Pascoal foi diagnosticada com câncer de mama em 2001 e, ao contrário de muitas pessoas, teve a sorte de contar com o apoio da família, um suporte hospitalar avançado e condições financeiras para realizar tratamentos particulares. Enquanto fazia quimioterapia, Gioconda percebeu que muitos pacientes com câncer necessitavam de apoio social e financeiro. Grata por ter superado o câncer de mama e por ter uma rede de apoio ao longo de sua jornada, Gioconda sentiu-se chamada a levar otimismo a pacientes com câncer que não eram tão afortunados quanto ela. Assim, começou a encontrar-se com outras sobreviventes do câncer de mama e juntas começaram a compartilhar seus testemunhos com pacientes oncológicos para dar-lhes esperança e apoio. 

She realized that what they were doing could have a greater impact so in 2002 Gioconda founded Se Toque. "Se Toque" is a non-profit organization that offers a support house for cancer patients in Ipatinga, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The support house, which is free and open to people diagnosed with cancer, provides food, clothing, wigs, and emotional support. Se Toque's mission has helped many and will continue to be a reference for cancer patients and their families, bringing them hope and optimism throughout their process.
