Worldview Collages: Museum Companion

Welcome!

Worldview is the glasses through which we see the world. Most of the time, we don’t even know it is there! However, if we never stop to examine it, we might not realize just how much it is impacting how we see the world. At the beginning of 2021, the PLP 8 cohort began a journey to build a Virtual Museum Exhibit representing Western worldview. In doing so, learners investigated worldview during the Middle Ages and Renaissance and compared how aspects of western worldview were connected to the past.

The driving question for this project was what can we learn from the past, and why does that matter to us today? To help answer the driving question and build their virtual museum, PLP 8 learners created collages of their own worldview.

Learners went through several different stepping stones to get to the final collages and explanations that you will see in this book. They were first asked to develop a Worldview Mind Map. Considering all seven aspects of worldview, learners identified examples within their own lives to consider what impacted that aspect of their worldview. Learners then worked to identify worldview in art. Looking at art and artifacts from the Renaissance and Middle Ages, learners chose specific pieces of art to discuss all seven aspects again.

Finally, learners identified at least five historically significant events in their own lives to represent their own worldview. Mapping out their events on a story mountain, learners then had to choose original, personal, critical, and creative images connected to the aspects of worldview. The supporting statement was created to express how the images were connected. Organizing their images in the following collages allowed the PLP 8 cohort to practice their empowered learner skills, using technology to construct their knowledge.

Teva

My collage expresses my worldview from the art in it that represent historical significant events in my life. I started off my collage with representing my childhood, as well as the religion I grew up around. This was of huge historical significance because not only would I not be here if I were not born, but I would also not have the same understanding of culture and religion. The next part of my collage represents the land I live in, as well as my learning. PLP was very significant to me because I have gained so much knowledge since I have joined the program, and has helped me grow as a learner. My next section of this collage focuses on values and passion, When I went to outdoor school when I was 8, it was one of the main events that sparked my interest in the environment. I learned so much about First Nations culture, as well as properties of the forest and plants. After this event it felt like my entire world view shifted because of all of the knowledge I gained about the the wonderful world I live in. I also wanted to show the time I discovered my first camera, which later became to be one of my favourite ways to express myself. Through discovering the world the a new lens (quite literately) I learned a lot about the geography around me. In my final section of my collage, I wanted to express society. I am in a whole different world of change. This pandemic is a challenge we are all facing together.

Erik

I was born into a nature filled environment and as a young child and played with nature all the time this effected my worldview because I realized that I could go outside and nature would be right outside my door, now to this day I enjoy being outside and I enjoy nature. Kindergarten shows time and knowledge in my worldview because I had no sense of time and my day wasn’t planned in regard with time. I also learnt that events could happen in advance because on the whiteboard the teacher wrote a day planner which had every activity in the day. It also shows knowledge because it’s my first steps time learning from other people and it was a new learning environment. When I first started playing basketball I started believing that hardwork beats natural skill, and if you work the hardest you will be the best. I learnt this from the extreme hardwork the pros put in to be in their place. From grade 4 to grade 6 I put in the hardwork and it payed off by me becoming a lot better. This gave me dedication to work hard in the sport. When I got my new dog I learnt to value responsibility more because I had to look after her while my family were away. I started to appreciate her as a pet and a member of our family. In grade 8 I started to become more financially independent by using my money to purchase things and I started learning about stocks. I started to realize that I was a citizen of this country, I also stated gaining my own political views

Gabriella

Welcome to my collage! In this paragraph I will be explaining the reasoning behind each photo you see above and what it represents. I think I’ll start off by explaining the questionably drawn babies near the top of the collage. The baby with the pink background represents me, as I’d say my birth was a very important part of my life, without it, I wouldn’t have been able to experience anything else on this collage. Coming up next is the second baby with the blue background(there is also a picture of what he looks like next to the blue baby), that is my little brother Luciano. The photo of the blue baby represents his birth, another very important event in my life.
In the bottom left corner of my collage we have a photo of my stepdad, Rob. That photo of him represents when I met him for the first time at the age of five. I think that is an important part of my life because I’m sure if I didn’t meet him, he wouldn’t be my stepdad, because of that he has a big impact. Moving on to my next image, we have the top left photo of me with eyeliner on, to represent when I first figured out how to use eyeliner. (Unfortunately I did not provide a picture of me when I originally learned how to use eyeliner because I looked atrocious. So here is a more recent photo.) I think this is an important event in my life because without eyeliner, my face wouldn’t be as creatively interesting as it is now.
For the final photo in the bottom right corner we have a mask to represent Covid19. This was (and still is) an important part of my life because it is an event the entire world is currently living through.
To sum up everything I have stated so far, these are the core parts of my life I have chosen to represent in this collage. Hopefully this paragraph accurately describes them and their reasons for being here.

Carter

and this relates to my worldview because it was one step closer to understanding life and everything on my worldview.
He started speaking at 1 years old on November 1 2008 and his first word was: mama this relates to his worldview in knowledge because it puts him one step closer

He started walking at 1 years and 3 months old and because of this he rolled off the bed. This increased his knowledge by him learning not to roll off the bed

Carter leaned to ski because his brother liked it and his dad skied so carter started skiing and really enjoyed it this relates to his worldview via geography and skiing/travelling this will look like Cartier falling down a mountain.
Carter got into PLP by making a lego video this relates to his worldview because he can now ski at other places around the world and that will change his worldview on geography. Carter walking for the first time this changed his worldview because he could now move around freely (within the house) and explore it.

Ariane

I was born in Canada on November 20, 2007. I chose to represent this through a globe and maple leaf. This connects to geography and time.
I met my closest friends on the first day of Elementary school. This connects to society, values, and economy.
Speaking of religion, I am a Catholic, as mentioned prior. I represented this through the drawing of a cross at the bottom right of the text. This connects to my beliefs.
My friend, Sabrina introduced me to this series called “Warriors” by Erin Hunter, when we were both nine. I chose to represent this through a speech bubble and book. This connects to knowledge and values.
When I was around the age of nine, I got my first pet named Berry. Unfortunately, he died a few years later. I chose to represent him through a drawing of him. I feel that this connects to values and knowledge.
I chose to draw a tree with the names of people in my immediate family in order to represent them. At the bottom of the tree, there’s a singular blue flower. I wanted that to represent my dad because he died from cancer shortly after I turned ten. This connects to values.
At the age of eleven, I had decided to try baking for the very first time. It wasn’t perfect, and the cookies I made were actually rather disgusting. This connects to knowledge.

Makenna

My worldview collage has a bunch of different photos that relate to my worldview. In the bottom right corner you can see the photos I added of me when I was little to represent me being born. I put them in this section because it was an important part of my life. Being born was an important part of my life because, I would not be here today if I was not born. The next part is about changing elementary schools. This section is located in the left bottom corner. I put it in this section because changing elementary schools was a big part of my life, if I hadn’t changed elementary schools I would not have the friends I have today. After this is Horseback riding which is located in the middle of my collage. I added in this section because horseback riding has changed my life in an amazing way. This relates to my worldview because one of my beliefs is that horseback riding is a fun and hard sport. The next section I have is when I first started organizing. Ever since I’ve started organizing I can’t stop. I love to organize and colour coordinate my homework, my room, the kitchen, living room, etc. Lastly I have my first day of high school area. I added this area because my first day of high school was overwhelming and fun at the same time, and is a big part of my worldview. The photos in my collage all represent my worldview in different ways. The photo of me and my friends explains my value for friendship and connection. The pictures of my horseback riding shows my passion for horses and how much I love horseback riding. The pictures of my first day of school show how important knowledge is in my worldview. Changing elementary schools shows time by showing how the friends I had going into a new elementary school stayed with me this whole time. Lastly my worldview organization is one of my beliefs because I love to keep everything organized and tidy.
