THE UK

THIS BOOK WAS A PROJECT CARRIED OUT ENTIRELY DURING LOCKDOWN DUE TO COVID-19. IT'S AN EXAMPLE OF HOW STUDENTS CAN EASILY COLLABORATE FROM HOME ON THE SAME PROJECT. I WANTED MY STUDENTS TO LEARN ABOUT BRITISH CULTURE IN AN ACTIVE AND MORE ENGAGING WAY. I ASSIGNED EACH STUDENT A PAGE OF THE BOOK WHICH INCLUDED DIRECTIONS AND USEFUL LINKS TO SEARCH INFORMATION. THEY WROTE THEIR DRAFTS AND I PROVIDED FEEDBACK. STUDENTS SEARCHED FOR IMAGES AND IN SOME CASES VIDEOS THAT WOULD BEST SUPPORT THEIR TEXTS.

THEY PRACTICED READING WITH THE READ ALOUD FEATURE THAT HELPED THEM IMPROVE THE PRONOUNCIATION OF UNFAMILIAR WORDS.
THE NEXT STEP WILL BE TO ADD THEIR VOICES WITH THE RECORD BUTTON TO IMPROVE THEIR SPEAKING SKILLS.

Wales is famous for its Celtic culture. Its capital city is Cardiff.

Northern Ireland's capital city is Belfast. Many people also speak Irish Gaelic.

Scotland's capital city is Edimburgh and it is famous for its numerous lakes.

THE UNION JACK

The Union Flag, or Union Jack, is the national flag of the United Kingdom. It is so called because it combines the crosses of the three countries united under one Sovereign - the kingdoms of England and Wales, of Scotland and of Ireland. The current design of the Union Jack dates from the Act of Union 1801 which united the Kingdom of Great Britain and the Kingdom of Ireland to create the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

Wales is in the south-west of the United Kingdom known for its rugged coastline, national parks, Welsh language and celtic culture. Cardiff, the capital, is a sophisticated coastal city.

Some of the city's attractions are: the Palace of Westminster, the Big Ben and Westminster Abbey.
The London Eye is a ferris wheel that offers a spectacular view of the cultural district of the South Bank and the rest of the city.

Some of the most popular places are: Buckingham Palace ( London residence and administrative headquarters of the monarchy), Big Ben (nickname for the Great Bell of the striking clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster), the London Eye ( the ferris wheel also known as the Millenium wheel), the Greenwich observatory located on a hill.
