THE UK

THIS BOOK WAS A PROJECT CARRIED OUT ENTIRELY DURING LOCKDOWN DUE TO COVID-19. IT'S AN EXAMPLE OF HOW STUDENTS CAN EASILY COLLABORATE FROM HOME ON THE SAME PROJECT. I WANTED MY STUDENTS TO LEARN ABOUT BRITISH CULTURE IN AN ACTIVE AND MORE ENGAGING WAY. I ASSIGNED EACH STUDENT A PAGE OF THE BOOK WHICH INCLUDED DIRECTIONS AND USEFUL LINKS TO SEARCH INFORMATION. THEY WROTE THEIR DRAFTS AND I PROVIDED FEEDBACK. STUDENTS SEARCHED FOR IMAGES AND IN SOME CASES VIDEOS THAT WOULD BEST SUPPORT THEIR TEXTS.

THEY PRACTICED READING WITH THE READ ALOUD FEATURE THAT HELPED THEM IMPROVE THE PRONOUNCIATION OF UNFAMILIAR WORDS.
THE NEXT STEP WILL BE TO ADD THEIR VOICES WITH THE RECORD BUTTON TO IMPROVE THEIR SPEAKING SKILLS.

Wales is famous for its Celtic culture. Its capital city is Cardiff.

Northern Ireland's capital city is Belfast. Many people also speak Irish Gaelic.

Scotland's capital city is Edimburgh and it is famous for its numerous lakes.

THE UNION JACK

The Union Flag, or Union Jack, is the national flag of the United Kingdom. It is so called because it combines the crosses of the three countries united under one Sovereign - the kingdoms of England and Wales, of Scotland and of Ireland. The current design of the Union Jack dates from the Act of Union 1801 which united the Kingdom of Great Britain and the Kingdom of Ireland to create the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

The British currency

The official currency of the United Kingdom is the Pound Sterling. One pound= 100 pence. It's symbol is £, which derives from the letter L, abbreviation of the Latin word librae. There are British coins and banknotes. The coins are eight: 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, £1 and £2; p means singular penny and plural pence. In the coins you can see parts of Royal Coat Of Arms of the United Kingdom. The banknotes are paper bills and there are four with legal value: £5, £10, £20 and £50. In Scotland, £1 banknotes are also printend, but they are rare to find. Elizabeth II is also queen of the banknotes, in which she is depicted.
