Arrays show repeated addition! Lets see with the equation 3 X 4.
4
3
= 12
We can say the stars are 3 sets of 4 OR 4 + 4 + 4 which is 12
4
But, what if we said this shows 4 sets of 3 or 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 instead? The answer would still be 12...
3
This is correct!!
Because of the COMMUTATIVE PROPERTY. The commutative property of multiplication states that two numbers can be multiplied in either order.
So, 4 X 3= 12 AND 3 X 4= 12. Both ways are correct!
So, 4 X 3= 12 AND 3 X 4= 12. Both ways are correct!
Commutative Property
Did you know many things in our every day lives show arrays?!
Can you think of something at home or in the classroom that shows an array?
