This is what you will need...You must make sure the magnet it set up to be north on one side and south on the other.
To do this, put 2 ceramic magnets on one side. Then pull them apart and put one on the other side (without spinning it around!)

The blu tac helps keep the loose wires in contact with the core wire every half turn.
The current in the coil must change direction every half turn - this is the usually a split-ring commutator
