Making a Westminster motor

You must make sure the magnet it set up to be north on one side and south on the other. To do this, put 2 ceramic magnets on one side. Then pull them apart and put one on the other side (without spinning it around!)

You can hear the motor slow down and speed up as the power pack is adjusted.

1) Make sure the voltage is low to begin with. 2) You may need to give it a little push to overcome the initial friction. 3) If the wires get trapped and it stops then turn off the power pack otherwise it will get hot! 4) If you see smoke then turn it off!

The blu tac helps keep the loose wires in contact with the core wire every half turn.

The two wires must make contact with the ends of the coil wires, but not be permanently connected. The wires must 'brush' against them on each turn. This is the hardest part to set up. If you can't keep it in contact using the rivets or blue-tac then just hold the wires. Once you can see it working then try to secure them in place.

The current in the coil must change direction every half turn - this is the usually a split-ring commutator 

Make sure you use Direct current. This is a D.C. Motor.
