Find Your Inner Ocean
"CRASH" the waves crashed against the side of the Hundred Voyage submarine. The strong waves threatened to crash through the windows and flood the whole sub. But Luliput wasn't scared. How could she be? She had lived on the sub her whole life. Her dad was the famous ocean explorer Dun Davies. But when you live on a submarine for your whole life it's hard to be thankful that you live on one.
"Why can't I live on land where people are?" Luliput asked her pet jellyfish, Puddle. When he seemed to not have an answer she went on. "Is he trying to ruin my life. All this does is make me anti social and crabby." She told this to Puddle all the time. He didn't say anything about her "Taking sub life for granted" as her father would say.
"Awwuga awwuga" the lights above her head suddenly blazed red.
Puddles shrunk back into his home as the small crew rushed to the control center. But Luliput didn't follow. A long time ago she decided that her point would be more effective if she didn't participate in helping this ocean she was trapped in.
"Come on Jellygirl!" Jeffery, her younger brother cackled as he rushed past. why did Jeffery have to be so interested in this stuff. that just gave her dad more of a reason to stay out in the middle of the ocean."Jellygirl. Get over here. Now!" Jeffery giggled into the sound system.
"Please do come here, this is important" Dun's voice came over. Luliput rushed to the control center. Maybe were going home she thought, wherever that was. She just knew that the Hundred Voyage was not home.
"I have decided something important" Dun Davies announced. Everyone seemed to lean in accept Luliput. "We are going to have a marine reserve on the reef we discovered yesterday.
"OH OH! The one with the new type of fish I discovered that is now named after me?" Jeffery said loud enough for Luliput to hear from all the way across the table.
"No fair!" Luliput protested. "Shouldn't it have a more scientific name?" Luliput begged.
"Jeffery did not get a fish named after him." Dun chuckled. Then he became serious. "You would know if you came to explore with us." Dun said in a little more pleading voice. Luliput looked away from him. When would he understand that she would never be like Jeffery and him.

Dun ignored Luliput's stubbornness and moved on with the marine reserve.
"And to make this happening official we shall celebrate!"
Luliput groaned.
"Whats a marine reserve any way?" she asked aloud to no one in particular. One of the sailors over heard her.
"I'll show you." he gestured toward the window on the side of the Hundred Voyage. "Do you see the reef down there?" he asked. Luliput looked down, but all she saw was a blob a color. "Well," he continued "We are putting a marine reserve there to preserve the reef so no one can destroy it." Luliput wondered why anyone would want to preserve a blob of color.
Maybe she should come out more to explore the ocean. It didn't seem like her dad was going to budge so maybe she should learn more about her forever home. No, she told herself. She pushed the thought out of her mind. But Luliput couldn't push the thought away. she had so many thing pounding at the back of her head. For instance, getting jeffery back on the "fish named after him" joke. Why not do that by finding a new species and naming it after yourself?
When her clock struck midnight she snuck out of bed.
"If dad or Jeffery comes in cover for me" she whispered to Puddles. Puddle just blew a bubble in return. She rushed out of the room and down the hall trying not to make her sneakers squeak on the floor. When she got to the exit pool she yanked off her sneakers and pulled on Jeffery's wet diving suit. to make sure she didn't wake her family she decided not to open the exit pool and to go out the secret passage way that Dun had showed her when she was little.
"If anything happens this exit will always be here." he had said. Back then she had decided only to use it during an emergency, like her father had said. But now she decided that this was kind of an emergency, kind of. She opened the hatch that led out to the ocean. The small space flooded with the dark water. She pushed herself out of the small space and into the ocean. In that moment she remembered why she had stopped doing this. When her clock struck midnight she snuck out of bed.

The black water swallowed her up. A shiver ran down her spine but not from the coldness of the water. Memories flashed through her mind. The vastness of the sea felt so unreal, like she was floating in space.
"Your here to go to the reef." she reminded herself. She reached for her flashlight but it was gone. She looked around herself and saw a black shape start falling to the sea floor.
"NO" she cried. She frantically swam after it. But she was going to deep. if she went any farther she would be crushed.
Luliput sighed. How could this mission become any worse. If Jeffery had this happen to him every time he went out on a mission she didn't know how Jeffery could still be doing it. She started to swim back to the hatch to get a new flashlight. But when she got to the hatch it had no handle. She yanked at the door. It didn't budge. Now she realized why the hatch was only for emergencies.Luliput started to panic. how could she be so foolish. But she couldn't stay out here all night. Jeffery had told her that night is when the sharks feed. She searched around the ship. there had to be more than one emergency exit! Suddenly she saw a green luminescent glow come from the sea floor. That must be the reef! Luliput swam as quickly as possible toward the glow.
