The Project
Step One
Ms. King's grade 1 students have been learning to identify and manage their emotions. Developing these social-emotional learning skills are essential for their overall well-being and mental health.
We introduced the concept of flay lay* photographs to the Grade 1 students. We told them we wanted them each to create one of items that calm their brains. They had previously created a list of ways to calm their brains. As a class, we brainstormed a list of tangible items that they could bring in to represent these ideas.
Step Two
Items That Calm Their Brains
Grade 1 Students were asked to bring in a ziplock bag full of objects that helped to calm their brains when they are sad, mad or feeling frustrated. They were encouraged to choose a variety of small objects & multiples of the same object. We sent a letter home about the project and gave them one week to collect the items. We also had a bin of
objects in the library that students could choose from.
Some students had items they wanted to include that were too large for the board. We photographed larger objects on our green screen so that they could be digitally shrunk & added to their flay lay photograph.
* A flat lay is simply an image shot direct from above (bird's eye view) of a carefully arranged objects
Step Three
As a class we sat in a circle and created a large board together. We took the flat lay photograph and displayed it on the SMART board. After, we discussed what worked and what didn't. The white background colour was one thing we wanted to change. We also noticed we need smaller items to achieve a balanced look.
Some students had already brought in their ziplock bag of items so they shared them with the group. It was helpful to give other students ideas.
