Hi,
My name is Pervez Hoodbhoy and I am a Pakistani peace activist. I was born in 1950 in the city of Karachi. My family belongs to the Gujarati people of Pakistan. At first I attended the Karachi Grammar school before moving to America to study at MIT. At MIT I spent years researching solid-state physics while also getting a PHD in nuclear physics. Then I went on to teach at the University of Washington and Carnegie Mellon University. While at MIT, I also spent some time working on particle physics with the creators of the Atomic Bomb. Just to be clear this is not because I want to make more nuclear weapons. In fact, its just the opposite.

My work with the Pakistani government for years has revolved around nuclear deterrence not just for my country, but for all of South Asia. I am very fortunate to have spent years learning from the greatest scientists the world has to offer, in addition to teaching the scientific minds of the future. And because of the opportunities that have been granted to me and the influence I am capable of having, I am trying to use my role to spread the message of peace. Science has long been manipulated as a tool for war to create more destruction, but i will not let this continue to be the case. Science needs to be used as a tool to help the world and progress us as a society even further.

Now that you know a little more about me, let me tell you about the main reason I moved back here and what I believe is the gravest danger facing Pakistan in my lifetime.

The year was 1947. I was not even born yet. Prior to this time, the countries of India and Pakistan were controlled by the British colonialists. But in 1947 the Colonialists decided to leave these territories. Residents of India and Pakistan were so excited to be free of the Colonialist rule, but this was just the beginning of new terror and strife for these two countries. The problem is that both my country of Pakistan and India believe that the Jammu and Kashmir region belongs to them and only them. As a result of this conflicting belief, India and Pakistan decided to fight three wars to settle the conflict over this region. Once in 1947, 1965 and 1999. The bloodshed was never ending. Day after day innocent civilians countless Indian and Pakistani soldiers were killed in wars or senseless skirmishes with the other side. People were being evicted from their homes and women and children were left unprotected from the opposing armies. While no major fight has occurred since 2003 everyone in the region is always on the edge of their seat wondering when the next conflict or war is going to break out.
