About Myedtechbuddy
Hi, I'm Daren. I'm a teacher and academic technologies specialist, a parent and a self-taught edtech enthusiast.

Myedtechbuddy provides a series of courses about educational technology that people can work through at their own pace, on computer or mobile.

It all began as a Google Innovator Project as part of #VIA20 Google Innovator Academy. My original idea was to support teachers in becoming more confident in using technology but this grew to include all school staff and students too.

Moving on up
This edition of myedtechbuddy is designed to help you as a young person preparing to move up to secondary school.

Our aims are simple:

- to help you become safe, competent and responsible digital citizens.
- to help you settle in to secondary school life
- to help you help your teachers to get to know you

all through the use of educational technology.

How myedtechbuddy works
Work your way through the tutorials in this book at a pace that suits you. When you are ready, take the final skills assessment to gain your electronic Thriving Licence.

You can dip in and out any time you like and you don't have to do things in order. None of the tutorials are longer than 8 minutes so they are great little time fillers.

Good luck!

These days more and more people are spending so much time online, it is important that you know how to stay safe on the web. Responsible digital citizens practice critical thinking, know how to protect their personal information, and know how to maintain their privacy.

Also, the use of technology may help you learn better, and it certainly helps your school to function well.

We want you to be safe, responsible and comfortable working online so that you can keep yourself and your friends and family safe.
1. WHAT IS DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP?
We also want to make sure you look after your future. There have been many high profile examples of people losing their jobs as adults because of something they posted online as a youngster.

What to look out for:
- have you heard of the website the news is on?
- is there a contact us or about us page?
- are the sources of information attributed?
- is the story being reported elsewhere by reputable sources?
- is the spelling and grammar correct?
- is the article dated?
- is the url suspicious?
- are any photos credited to the photographer?
- might the photos have been edited?
- does the article carry the writers full name and email?

If any of this doesn't look right, there's a chance it's fake news.

Checking images:
When you have an image that may have been zoomed in or cropped, try a reverse image search to see if you can find a larger version of the image that includes more information.
If that search doesn’t pull anything up, then try a search for “similar images”.
When you have a video that has been cropped or is a recording of the original, then try carrying out reverse image searches with screenshots from the video.
