• If your child is going to be absent, please contact the teacher and let them know as soon as possible. Please provide a reason as to why your child is absent so it can be marked correctly. We strongly discourage families to take extended absences outside of the District’s planned vacation times. • If your child is tardy (arriving 9:00 or later), please park your car in a visitor parking spot and walk your child to the door so they can be checked in. • DO NOT park in the designated fire lane.

• If you need to dismiss your child, please send in a note with your child or email&nbsp;the classroom teacher know. Please send in the note/email as early as possible. • If an unexpected dismissal needs to occur, please send an email AND contact the main office. • Your child will be released only to the designated person(s). An ID is required for dismissals. • Please park your car in a visitor spot and come to the main office. • DO NOT park in the fire lane directly in front of the building.

Arrival - 8:45-9:00&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Dismissal - 3:15 The gates at both ends of the playground will open 8:35 and 3:00. Thank you for respecting these times as early arrival in the AM or PM causes traffic problems and decreased safety for our school community.

·&nbsp;Homework may be assigned on a regular basis. ·&nbsp;Homework assignments will be related to learning targets and reinforce classroom instruction and will not be used to teach new learning content. ·&nbsp;Projects, reports, essays, readings or other long-term assignments may be partially or fully completed at home.&nbsp; These assignments should not entirely encompass a holiday or school vacation. · Teachers will ensure that students understand the purpose of the assignment and can complete the work independently. · Students are expected to complete all homework assignments in a timely manner and will receive credit as classwork, never as a separate grading category. ·&nbsp;Parents/Guardian are encouraged, if needed, to seek out enrichment activities for their student(s). MPS values many learning activities in the life of a student, including cultural events, sports, part-time employment, and family life.&nbsp; Teachers will take into consideration students’ individual needs and MPS will support teachers flexibility when assigning homework. MPS believes that a successful homework program depends on a successful partnership of teacher, student and parent/guardian.

• Doors open at 8:45 for student arrival. • Anyone arriving after 9:00 is considered tardy and will need to be signed in at the main office. • Dismissal begins at 3:15 for all students. • On early release days, dismissal is at 12:15 pm.

• Please complete a CORI form at the main office if you have any intention of volunteering in your child’s classroom or attending any field trips. • ALL VISITORS MUST SIGN IN at the main office and wear a badge while in school. • ALL VISITORS MUST SIGN OUT at the end of the visit.

Safety Considerations · HAVE A PLAN:&nbsp; It is imperative that families maintain a consistent plan for dismissal so that students know precisely what to do and teachers can be sure that all students go where they are expected. Students and staff struggle to maintain safety when dismissal plans change.&nbsp; · CONSISTENCY:&nbsp; Only people listed on your child’s emergency card will be allowed to pick up your child.&nbsp;ID is required when picking up students. · CONTACT INFORMATION: &nbsp;For reasons of illness, concern and safety, it is imperative that we have the most current and accurate contact information available.&nbsp; · PLAY DATES:&nbsp; We cannot honor plans for children to go home from school with friends for play dates.&nbsp; Please organize play date transportation outside of school for the safety of all our students.

• A message from the Superintendent’s Office will go through our automated system if there is a late start or a cancelled day of school. MPS is committed to a rigorous educational program for all students, with high standards for teaching and learning.&nbsp;&nbsp; Thoughtfully designed lessons may not always be accomplished fully in the classroom environment, and teachers may assign classwork to be completed as homework beyond the school day.&nbsp; In partnership with the schools, it is expected that families will support their child(ren)/student(s) with appropriate grade level literacy and mathematics activities that supports academic growth.&nbsp; At the Educators discretion, MPS believes that work beyond the school day can support classroom lessons and may be necessary to complete and achieve mastery of and enrichment for the curriculum.

Elementary School Cell Phone (Phone, Watches, and All Electronics) Expectations

What: Cell phones are not allowed to be used at school.&nbsp; All students at Goodnow, Jaworek, Kane, and Richer Schools who have a device with them will be expected to power them down at the beginning of each day (before getting on the bus) and they will remain off until arrival at home (after getting off the bus). &nbsp;Students are not allowed to take pictures/videos of any other student or staff member.&nbsp; Cell phone use is not permitted in classrooms, cafeterias, hallways, restrooms, and school offices.&nbsp; Students will be expected to keep phones off and in their backpacks throughout the day. Why: Cell phones are not needed at school for a student to be successful.&nbsp; Cell phones pose a substantial disruption to the learning of all students and are not needed in the educational environment for success.&nbsp; All students have school Chromebooks or iPads to access online materials.

Car Drop-off Procedure 1. After 8:35, drive into the parking lot and stay to the right. 2. Follow the parking lot past the large bus canopy and around the back of the school past the trash bins and the playground. 3. Park your car in the designated area and wait for the school staff to come out at 8:45. · Parents need to stay in the car when dropping off their child. · Please say your good-byes and have your child ready to exit the car for 8:45. 4. When directed, pull your car up to a staff member, who will assist your student(s) exiting the car for safety purposes. 5. Exit the drop off area through the black gate and stay to the right. 6. Turn right at the stop sign and exit the school property. •&nbsp; As a safety precaution, we request drivers not use their cellphones during this time.

Elementary School Cell Phone (Phone, Watches, and All Electronics) Expectations

Expectations: ●&nbsp; &nbsp;Cell phones are not allowed to be used on school grounds. ●&nbsp; &nbsp;Cell phone use is prohibited in classrooms, cafeterias, hallways, restrooms, and school offices. ●&nbsp; &nbsp;During the instructional day, cell phones must remain in student backpacks located in each classroom. ●&nbsp; &nbsp;Wireless headphones, personal iPads, video games, cameras, and cell phone watches are also not permitted. ●&nbsp; &nbsp;If students need to place an emergency phone call during the day, they should request to do so using a classroom or office phone. ●&nbsp; &nbsp;Students will be subject to disciplinary action if they are found to have violated the cell phone expectations.

We use a restorative approach to build and maintain connections in our community, Restorative Justice. Restorative Justice is: -is a philosophy or framework, based upon values and principles which sees relationships as central to learning, growth and a healthy school climate for students and adults. -In resolving conflicts and issues within our community, we strive to use a restorative approach, rather than a punitive one. -Restorative practices focus on establishing and maintaining relationships and when necessary, repairing relationships among members of the school community.&nbsp; Additionally, we strive to be an anti-bias anti-racist community, with a focus on embedding this work into our curriculum and teaching practices, so we are able to shift mindsets to include diversity, equity, and inclusion for all members of our community.&nbsp; We aim to create safe, supportive learning communities that routinely look for, actively dismantle, and work to reverse any inequalities that exist.

Moving within Marlborough

Please notify the school if you have moved or are planning to move

1. Pupils, whose parents or legal guardians move from one elementary school district into another school district in the city during a school year have the option of remaining in the original school district for the rest of that school year, provided that the parents or legal guardian furnish transportation to and from school. This is a family decision and should be considered carefully and discussed with the Building Administrator with respect to the students’ socialization and education. The pupil will be transferred to the correct school district for the following academic year. Pupils whose parents or legal guardians move out of the city during the academic school year, causing a residence change outside the city, will be considered non-resident students.&nbsp; 2. If the student is homeless or formerly homeless during the school year, please refer to Policy 9.700 Homeless Students: Enrollment Rights and Services.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Car Pick-up Procedure 1. Place the card with your child’s name in the window. 2. After 3:00, enter the parking lot, and turn left in front of the building. 3. Enter the pick-up circle through the black gate. 4. Drive around the back of the school. 5. Pull up as far as the line will allow and Staff will bring your student to your back seat (this is regulation).&nbsp; Please make sure to have proper restraint and car seats in your car and place your car in park/neutral (with emergency brake on) for safety purposes. 6. Quickly and safely secure your child and exit the car line. Please do not pull out and around cars in front of you, this puts students and staff in danger. 7. Once past the building, exit the parking lot on the back side of the median (NOT the side the busses use to pick up students). • As a safety precaution, we request drivers not use their cellphones during this time.

Toys from home often distract students during instructional time and become a disruption in throughout the school and on the bus. Children become upset when special toys are borrowed, lost or broken. Unless a toy relates directly to a classroom activity or an individualized plan, please do not allow your child to bring a toy to school. This includes outside playing equipment including, but not limited to Pokémon cards, soccer balls, footballs, basketballs, wiffle balls/bats, etc. Kane School will provide students with playing equipment while in recess and special outdoor activities.
