There was lots of math in this model. I enjoyed seeing the different aspects of math appear as I did the model.&nbsp;I chose this model because I thought the ring was pretty and could make a thoughtful gift.

While this model is not very difficult, this model was very challenging for me. While doing this model I had to reteach myself all the basics. So for my final difficult model I wanted to try my hand at the most difficult flower in the book. The model was very tricky. I had to relearn the frog base and go step by step.

This is a type of Kirigami model (involves folding &amp; cutting). It was a simple model but working with the post-it note was tricky because of the stickiness around the edges. I folded it in a way that allowed for the part that I cut off at the end to be the sticky part. It was a bit challenging to get the lines precise and to fold with as much accuracy because the paper was much smaller than the paper I usually fold with.&nbsp;

I chose this model as something fun to do with my 9-year-old nephew. We are limited to what we can do for fun during this time. So we each made models and tested to see whose model would go the farthest.

I chose this model because it can be helpful to know how to make an envelope. In this time of pandemic there is nothing else to do but hobbies and writing friends letters. What a nice touch it adds to make the envelope yourself.

The choice model I created for my collection is known as an origami shuriken, which is also referred to as a ninja star or throwing star. This model was not particularly challenging; however, I never made one before. Until recently, I did not realize that they were just two pieces; originally, I thought they composed four pieces. Sometime over the course of the semester, I learned this kind of origami had a name: modular origami.

This origami model is an evolution of my choice origami model. It is an origami shuriken, or ninja star, that transforms. I chose this model because I knew it would be an exemplary model in regards to representing rotational symmetry. When contracted, it has 8-fold rotational symmetry, and, when expanded, it has no rotational symmetry.

My Unique Material Model

After searching for random materials in my house, I came across a pliable, mat-like, material meant for gripping surfaces. The square sheet was filled with holes and had a rubbery texture. I cut it larger than a typical origami square so that the process of folding my creation would be easier. None of the folds I made held their form without the help of gravity or clips. I had to lay the model flat to ensure that the folds would stay. Placing the model on its feet would cause it to unravel.

I chose this model because I've been folding these ever since I was a kid. They were the first piece of origami I was ever taught, which was even before I learned how to make a simple paper plane. Teaching this model was easy for its large and decisive folds. In addition, it did not require to many steps.

This model transforms into a ninja star with just a few slides. I choose it as my math model because it demonstrates a lot of geometry in the parts and the whole model. I really like this model because it changes shape and I use to make regular ninja stars as a kid.

I selected this as my challenging model because I found it difficult to follow all the fold/crease patterns. I like this model because it pushed my ability but came out really nice.

For this model I used aluminum foil as my unique material. I liked the way it was reflective and it went well with the space shuttle model. This was a fun model to make with unique material.

I selected this as my choice model because I thought it was really cute and reminded me of my childhood. It was really simple to make and was really fun to decorate afterwards.

I chose this particular model to teach because a lot of people were asking me how I made mine. I thought it would be a great opportunity to teach something that would grab peoples attention. I really enjoyed teaching this model because they were all so happy with the finished product.

I choose the rose cube as my mathematical model because I think its really interesting how it can change from something we view as very mathematical to something so pretty. It's so interesting how someone designed a cube to turn into a rose. It is also really mathematical to create such a model and that is why I believed it was a perfect choose as my mathematical model.

I choose this model because I have come to really like making modular Origami. It was very challenging to put together though because it took 30 units to make. I had to use both tape and paper clips to put it together.

My model is a traditional bat origami. I used Baking paper as my material because it was easy to cut to the size I needed as well as folds prominently. I choose the bat because it shows clear folds and how well the baking paper makes those folds.

I choose this as my choice model because once I made the stellated icosahedron I was inspired to make more like it and do a better folded model then my first Sonobe model. I had a lot of fun making this model and it stays completely together with no tape or glue. It also very nice because its not a very large model and is fun to toss around and catch.

I choose this model because it reminds me of elementary and middle school days when I used to make these in class and people would love to throw them around the classroom. It is also a very easy action modular origami and  fun to make.

I selected this model because I love stars and I thought a five-pointed star would be a great representation of a mathematical model. Five-pointed stars form a decagon. You can use the star to discuss many topics including rotational symmetry, triangles types, angle measures, and polygons.

I selected this dragon model because it had more detail than I had previously worked with in creating origami. I felt that because it was so detailed, it would be challenging to my skill set. This model starts off with the preliminary base. I believe that anyone in our class can complete it because it features all of the folds that we have learned.

I made this origami wolf using sun-patterned scrapbook paper! I chose a wolf because the overall feel of the paper reminded me of nighttime. Wolves are usually associated with nighttime and the moon. This piece was relatively easy to create. However, in the future, I definitely would have chosen thinner paper - it took some effort to make the folds sharp.

I chose a peacock as my choice model because I think peacocks are very beautiful. I also wanted to try using foil in an origami piece. I used foil for the tail because the foil can reflect any and all colors, and a peacock's tail is multicolored. I like that this piece utilizes two pieces of paper so that I could use a different paper for the body and tail.

I selected this fox to teach others because it seemed easy enough to teach to beginners. Foxes are also my favorite animal so it was the perfect choice. The model has many folds, but they are not complicated. The end result is very satisfying!

I chose this model because of its mathematical qualities. For example, it has 5-fold rotational symmetry, disregarding color. This model also features a convex equilateral pentagon if you focus on the outer, connected edges. Each corner of the pentagon is traveled up by creases to form five isosceles trapezoids. The center of this model is split equally into the five different pieces of paper which means that each central angle of the shape is 72 degrees.

This model was extremely challenging because of where each fold is placed and the precise placement of those folds. For this model to come together, every single fold must be ceased at the correct spot or the pieces will not come together to rotate. This model gave me the hardest time but also the best feeling afterward. I could not be happier with the result.

I chose tin foil as my unique material because it creases easily and I knew it would be a challenge. I think the fox was a great way to show off tin foil as a unique material because it is not normally a difficult model, but the tin foil made it very time consuming to get perfect. Each fold needed to be spot on or the model needed to be restarted.

I chose to create a star for my choice model because of the symbolic nature around the model. In my religion, stars symbolize heavenly bodies and are believed to guide the way for those living. I chose the color brown for my star. We would not be able to create without any of the colors we see. A brown star is not a “normal” color to make a star but it does not matter. All colors are beautiful and should not be minimized due to a social norm.

I chose this model because it reminded me of the course, The Art of Origami, in that butterflies are free spirited and mindful, just like this course. Overall, this assignment was very enjoyable. It was fun teaching my family something that I have gotten so good at, and them not knowing anything about it.

Title: Unicorn Model author: Kyohei Katsuta Book/source: Origami Works of Kyohei Katsuta

I like this model, and I had a good grasp of its crease pattern, so I decided to use it for the mathematical model. The northwest corner of the crease pattern forms the head, and the southeast corner forms the tail. The legs are formed out of the 2 series of 3 tight parallel lines that are also parallel to the diagonal. This particular unicorn is folded from a 40 cm piece of tissue foil.

Jeremy Shafer named this his "flasher hat" after several other flasher models, which were designed to open and close rapidly. This hat can be collapsed to about 3 by 6 inches. The entire hat had to be folded at once, without any instructions beyond the crease pattern. This was something I had never done before, and was extremely difficult. This hat was folded with a 2 foot square of foil-backed paper

This model is folded with a 2 foot square of baking paper, which was sold as something to wrap cake boards with. It has a foil backing, which made shaping and molding the details easy and fun! My neighbors have horses, so I like to fold horses, unicorns, pegasi, etc, because I have the real thing as a reference. I like this model in particular, because you can easily change the proportions and posture with a few adjustments.

This was the first "complex" origami model I ever folded. I had folded lots of origami in the past, but they were mostly beginner models. It took over two weeks of non-stop trial and error, but I eventually completed it. This is how I got into advanced origami. This particular dragon was folded years later, and bares little resemblance to that first successful attempt. It is proof that any model can be folded by anyone, with enough time, determination, and stubbornness. This model is made of 3 foot long blueprint paper.

I was once asked by the ACCC art club to do an origami demonstration, and this was the model I decided to teach. Naturally, I decided to teach the same model to others this time. Since elementary school, I would fold lilies out of any scrap of paper I could find. The fun thing about teaching this model is that the folder can shape the petals to their taste, adding their own personal touch.

I selected this model because I've always been a lifelong Star Wars fan. Once I saw the model, I didn't care about how hard it'd be-but only finishing it. This model is pure origami, therefore involved no cutting and only one piece of paper.

For the unique material model, I chose to fold an origami butterfly. I chose a gum wrapper as my material. This model was especially hard, working with such a small scale model. I enjoyed this because the instructions were easy to remember for folding future wrappers.

I selected this as my mathematical model because of its symmetrical quality. This model also starts out as a square/cube and opens up to become a rectangular prism. It can relate to the course because it is also a type of modular origami (made of units). It is not pure origami, so it needed multiple pieces, along with glue to complete the model.

This model was challenging for me because there was what is called a rabbit ear fold, which is difficult to me. During this fold, you need to hide a piece of the model when there is already an existing crease that is not needed. This makes the model want to fold over instead of under. Also, trying to fold symmetrically so the sides of the model look the same is difficult. This relates to class because during out free exploration day, I previously did this model. You can see improvements in the newer model!

This model is unique because I used money! Using a crisp, barely used bill was helpful when folding, as there was no existing creases. I liked this unique material model because money is around us all the time, and to fold it into something so cool is fascinating that we can turn an everyday item into a hobby- origami.

The model I chose to do was a rose. This is my favorite flower as well as my great-grandmothers. I chose to use yellow paper, because a "Yellow tea rose" is the national flower of my sorority, Sigma Delta Tau. I really enjoyed creating this model. It was simple, but there was challenging aspects and new folds I didn't learn in class.

I selected this mathematical model because it was a modular flower piece. I also thought it looked unique. In this model many shapes can be found like isosceles triangles and concave quadrilaterals. This model also has 5-fold rotational symmetry.

I selected this as my challenging model because I do not practice modular origami regularly. I faced the most challenges when attaching each unit to another. I liked this model because of the star it created in the center of the piece. The model consisted of 10 pieces of paper so it allowed me to chose my colors and not be limited to a single color.

For my unique material I chose to work with coloring book paper. It is easy to work with and I was able to select the unique coloring book page and color it how I desired. I selected a dragonfly because they have always sparked my curiosity as a little girl. They are such unique insects, appearing in many different sizes and colors! I liked this model because the coloring paper allowed me to represent so many more colors than the average solid color origami paper!

I selected this sunflower as my choice model because they are my favorite flower. I love how bright they are. I liked this model because it was special to me and because it challenged me. I had to make each petal unit the same so that the overall effect looked life-like.

I selected a horseshoe crab as my model to teach others. I chose a model that relates to what I am studying, medicine. Horseshoe crabs are found in our oceans, but they have unique blood that is used in medical research today. This has always amazed me! I like this model because it looks so similar to the real thing!

I chose this 3D Star because I found the model to be very interesting, because it has different levels of dimension. It consisted of a lot of mathematical terminology we learned in class, which made these tutorials so much easier to understand.

I chose this Dahlia flower because it tested not only my abilities, but my patience as well. Accuracy, precision, and attentiveness to details was very important. It wasn't the folds that made it challenging, but rather making sure the model falls into its correct shape. This model was really fun to make!

I chose butterflies because it has great meaning in my life, and that is why I decided to create a different type of butterfly compared to what I've made before. The material I used for this model is chiyogami paper, which is thinner and more delicate compared to the origami paper I use. It relates to our course because it was very simple for me to follow the video tutorial, because I had knowledge of all of the folds that needed to be done.

I chose to create a different model of a butterfly because I think they are such interesting and unique creatures, and it has great meaning in my life. I wanted to be able to utilize the origami models I made, so I created several butterflies so I can hang them up as decoration. Butterflies represents creativity, good luck, growth, etc. I find any kind of butterflies to be beautiful, whether if they are real, origami, or drawings or paintings.

I decided to make the twirling bird because I thought it was simple for beginners to make. The participants who I taught were genuinely interested in making the model, which made it fun to teach. I like this model because when I was younger, I used to make cranes with my siblings so it was nice to learn a different type of bird model to create. This model actually twirls in circles which I found to be really cool!

The model I chose for my mathematical model is the Pixel Pyramid. There are so many different ways you can incorporate origami into a math lesson. For this origami model I decided to focus my attention on geometry and the different triangles it takes to make the pyramid.

The model I chose for my challenging model is called the Lovers Knot. It is also called a bow tie model because in its final form it looks like a mini bow tie. I chose this model from one of Dr. Boakes' daily origami calendars in her  book collections she shares in class. This model caught my eye because you had to blow air in it to puff it up then press it down to get the final shape. That is exactly why this model turned out very challenging for me.

For my unique material model I decided during class one day to try the tissue paper flowers. I have always seen them used for decorations and I figured it would be something cute that I could use in the future. I did my first couple tries in class during free time. I realized that tissue paper is so much easier to find in stores than origami paper.

The model that I chose is also made out of unique material because I had so much fun with my tissue model. My model is a ribbon made out of card stock. Card stock is easy to find in craft stores. You can find a big sheet of it for as little as 50 cents at Michaels. You can also get packs of card stock for less than $10 so it's cheaper to purchase rather than normal origami paper.

I&nbsp;chose to do a koala for my instructional origami piece. The reason why I chose this particular model was because I wanted to do something, cute, easy, and fun. I taught my dad, sister, and brother. The main reason why I chose this model was because I wanted to keep it simple so I can focus on incorporating the mathematics into my instruction plan.

The Origami art featured in this book was prepared by students in the course, GNM 2257 The Art &amp; Math of Origami. Through this course, students explore the art of Origami including the language, notation, and its use as a form of artistic expression. Within this process, interdisciplinary connections are made to several areas including culture, history, and mathematics. This book features each student's personal Origami collection. A student is responsible to select the models and create them on their own. Within this process, students are given five categories they must relate models to including: - a mathematical model -a model made of unique material -a challenging model (for their level) -a model of choice (just for fun or because it has meaning) -a model they instruct to others

I selected this as my mathematical model because it portrays many concepts gone over in class. Within the model you can see rotational symmetry and many different shapes such as a concave quadrilateral, a kite, and an obtuse scalene triangle. Overall I liked this model because of the geometric shape and dimension it has.

I selected this as my challenging model because of the complexity of its shape. It holds a geometrical form and is constructed through various modular units. I liked folding this model because the challenge allowed me to focus more and free my mind of all distractions.

I selected this as my unique model because it kept my Easter spirit alive despite tough circumstances. It is made out of coloring book pages that served perfectly as colorful Easter decorations. I loved folding this model because it allowed me to teach my family and spend time with them on Easter Sunday.

I selected this as my choice model because I felt like it perfectly represents who I am. I love bright colors and beautiful flowers like the lotus. I also love its Japanese meaning of blooming into purity.

I selected this model to teach others because my family is really into music. Since they were my audience for this model, I wanted to choose something that they would find an interest in folding. I loved folding the piano because it allowed room for lots of creativity and fun.

I am a professor at Stockton University. I created this book as a way to feature the artwork of students in one of the courses I teach in our General Studies curriculum called "The Art &amp; Math of Origami". Normally, I host an actual show on campus! Due to the pandemic, I made the decision to shift to a completely virtual format. If you don't know about Stockton University yet, I recommend checking out our website! We are ranked among the top public universities in the Northeast . Our campus is about 1 hour from Philadelphia and two hours from New York City! As you can see from the photo, the main campus is surrounded by 1,600 acres within the Pineland National Reserve. We recently added a beach-side campus in Atlantic City, only a ten minute drive from our main campus in Galloway! I hope you enjoy perusing the book I've created! I chose to use this as my mathematical model because I believed it could challenge me. It involved 8 pieces of papers that created many shapes including pentagons, octagons, parallelograms and quadrilaterals. I liked this model because it was able to create two different models in one.

This model involves five pieces of paper that are all folded the same way. Each pedal was glued closed then all five were glued together to create a beautiful flower. The flower, according to folklore, is to ward off evil and sickness.

I decided to create an elephant out of unique material because they mean a lot to me. My grandma has collected every kind of elephant imaginable for as long as I can remember. She always told me that when the trunk is pointed upward it symbolizes good luck.

I chose to create this model out of unique material instead of traditional origami paper. I used sparkly cardstock to challenge myself. The pinwheel is meaningful to my sorority Sigma Delta Tau because of our philanthropy PCAA. Their slogan is "Childhood should be a breeze".

I chose to teach this model because it seemed fairly easy for people with no origami knowledge to complete. I liked this model because it had many folds that created triangles, and different shapes. I also liked being able to teach an origami term which was a squash fold. The squash fold appears on the back on the heart where you see the sideways triangles on the top.

I chose to make a modular model for my mathematical model because modular models embody the importance of symmetry and geometry in origami. It was important for the pieces to be identical for this model in order for it to connect.

This turtle was made using a dollar bill. I chose this model because I thought it looked interesting due to the placement of the graphics on the dollar bill. While making a model with a pre-creased dollar was difficult, I still wanted to attempt it.

This model used the familiar folds we have been using in class as well as a new method of creating a 3D looking structure. For the final step, I had to twist and curl the paper and manipulate it to look like a rose. I chose this model because of its uniqueness and new methods that we were not used to using in class.

I chose this model to teach to others because it was simple, yet looked complex when finished. This was a fun model to make with friends over Zoom and the butterfly provided a little positivity given the circumstance.

The tissue box has two-fold rotational symmetry and the folding process is entirely symmetrical. Whatever is done to one side is repeated on the adjacent sides. I found several shapes within the Origami tissue box such as triangles and rectangles that I highlighted in my written paper that accompanied this model.

The Origami spinner is a modular model that utilizes the waterbomb base as the modular units. While it is easy to fold the individual units, I very quickly learned the assembly process was a bit tricky. I found this model to be particularly challenging when I attempted to connect my modular pieces. I needed to use clips for assistance. I learned it was extremely important to make sure to alternate the function of the arms of each unit. If one arm was being used as a pocket, the other arm should be inserted into another unit. Modular Origami has taught me a lot of patience compared to doing a simpler model.

I selected this model because I find it to be very visually appealing. The colors are vivid and bright and the hat looks more challenging than it actually is. In this model a few folds are done without landmarks which allows the artist to change the position or angle of those folds so that each hat can be different.

This was the first modular piece I ever completed on my own. I think it is important to note that this model was not “pure” Origami and required glue during assembly.&nbsp; There is not much information published on the author or historical connection, however the model is typically used as a stress toy because it can expand and can easily be folded back in a compressed position. As someone who is easily stressed out, I found this model to be simple and quite appealing.

 For my instructional project, I wanted to pick a piece that would be a good introduction for beginners. The bear face requires very few folds and is a pure origami piece that does not require any other materials than one piece of paper.
