FOOD

Sri Lankans love their rice with lots of flavour and made very differently than most countries. Sri Lankans traditionally eat their rice with their hands and make it with banana leaf which gives it a wonderful mild, sweet, earthy flavour.

Sri Lankans love their rice with a lovely warm curry.

Sri Lankan food is very similar to Indian food but there are some differences that set them aside from India. Sri Lankan curries tend to be more heavily spiced that Indian and more of a runnier consistency, they also include a lot of non-native ingredients that have been imported from many different places.

Sri Lankan's love their coconut so you will find that they put this lovely sweet into almost every dish, whether it is using coconut oil to shallow fry some veggies or adding coconut milk to a curry they always find a way.

Sri Lankan's love their fancy fish, things like lobster, crab, crayfish, cuttlefish
and prawns!

SPORT

Sri Lanka's national sport is volleyball.

Even though the sports ministry named volleyball the national sport cricket is still the most popular sport in the country and in my opinion should be the national sport. Sri Lanka also has a very good School system that encourages kids to play sport. Encouraging young kids to play sport not only keeps sport's alive but also keeps them active and healthy.

LANDMARKS

Nine arch bridge -This gorgeous sight just outside Ella surrounded by a luscious green rainforest is a wonderful reason to visit Sri Lanka. Many people recommend the lovely walk in the forest but if you are feeling tired and just need a break there is always the wonderful 9 hour train from Colombo to Ella, it is the most scenic train ride in Sri Lanka!

The temple of the tooth -The temple of the tooth is one of the most sacred Buddhist sites you can go to. It holds the tooth of Buddha. You can't actually see the tooth because it is kept in a gold casket shaped like a dagoba. The place is heavily guarded and there is no chance that you will even get a chance to get your hands on the tooth because there are around a million people that visit the temple each year. On conditions of entry you have to take your shoes off and have your shoulders and legs covered.

There are several smaller temples, shrines and museums inside the main temple.

Lipton's seat -Lipton's seat is an incredible lookout and has an amazing 8km hike through gorgeous hills of the tea plantation. Sir Thomas Johnstone Lipton was a British Merchant and the builder of Lipton tea empire. He was born in Glasgow Scotland may 10th 1850 and died in London October 2nd 1931.

Sri Lanka is the largest tea exporter in the WORLD! Cinnamon also Originated in Sri Lanka!

Culture

There are two main religious groups in Sri Lanka, Hinduism and Buddhism. Sri Lanka have multiple temples everywhere around the Country. The tradition is to buy flowers at the entrance of the temple for offerings. For the Sri Lankan's it is forbidden for you to take a photo of a Buddha representation because it is a sacred object, the same is true for Buddhist monks.

there are some rules that are a big part of staying in Sri Lanka. You have to be properly clothed and give and receive with the right hand.

There are many cultural events in Sri Lanka such as the Galle Literary Festival which brings together Asian and European writers, it takes place in the second half of January for five days. Another festival is Nava Maha Perahera it is a wonderful festival in the city of Colombo a festival of music and dance.

Hinduism- a major religious and cultural tradition of South Asia, which developed from Vedic religion.
Temple- a building devoted to the worship of a god or gods.
Tradition- the transmission of customs or beliefs from generation to generation, or the fact of being passed on in this way.
Forbidden- not allowed
Buddhist monk- man in a religious order who lives a life of poverty, chastity and obedience.
